There was this quote by Thomas Aquanius which (paraphrasing here) related to how God shows itself through nature. Makes me sick that people can't think outside of their own circle and see what actually fundamental to their own survival. Great close ups. I love the high altitude stuff.... tough little suckers to carve out a living up there. Ringing bells and stroking their forehead with some kind of damn crystal or something....maybe play some of those Tibetan gongs to get their che all in one tight package.... idiots. The lightening rock is pretty awesome. Guess it wouldn't be a great idea to camp up there. Maybe you could convince some of those hippies they can get their yantra on up there during a really big storm. This was a particularly good video. I enjoy the geology too.

and it turns a deep, beautiful maroon in the winter.

Joey is producing the best videos on TH-cam, no doubt. I watch them about...every damn day. The knowledge of plants, fantastic landscapes and ecology, (the colorful commentary with all the tasty krass...is important because a lot of this cheap unnecessary human behavior needs to stop), it’s all fucking good, Joey, all of it! I find it harder to watch my usual mundane garden videos, and Joey has changed my approach to gardening. Thank you Joey!

Would you mind giving a tutorial on how you navigate to these places? Not necessarily how to get there (which I assume you wouldn't want to share), but --- how to not get lost there?
I know it's an old comment, but if you want to find cool plants go off trail in places it isn't specifically mentioned not to, just be mindful of where you step still. And don't venture too far into unfamiliar territory, stay within eyesight of a landmark by the trail and maybe only hike for a few minutes in a straight line.
Ive found some cool plants just wandering around on game trails as well.
Been hooked your channel for a while now- first for the personality, because I thought I could never get botany, but some of it is starting to sink in. Just wish you made some trips back to the mid-west once in while; I'm a Hoosier, and I bet you know the plants I'm lookin' at.
I learned more from you in three videos than I ever learned in school, and I have always had a passion for plant's and geology. Funny story, they never let us open the science books in elementary school, but the State of Michigan tested us on it. The test was heavy on botanical terminology, I missed one question out of 150 questions, an ode to Gray's Manual of Botany, it was 40yrs old, but my favorite as soon as I learned to read and use the Dictionary. And it still sits on my bookshelf,35 yrs later, Dictionary fell apart(heavy use)
This guy is a real inspiration, I'm gonna start acquainting myself with the locals.

Hi, random question for people that go alone in the wilderness a lot. How do you stay safe? Here in Canada a while back there were several murders by these idiots, they killed a young couple and a famous botanist. He was out collecting samples, just like I hope to do someday. In Canada carrying something like a handgun is a lot harder, but now I’m paranoid.
Why let the "news" bring fear into your life over something that likely wont even happen? In fact, you don't even know if that actually happened in the first place. It could be BS like most of the crap they spew!! Live free of their mind control.
Dirty Pagan just keep your eyes open and, more importantly, your ears. People who wander around with ear buds stuffed in their ear holes are just asking to be thumped by ne’er-do-wells that want your shit. In the wilderness and the city. It helps to look like you know where you’re going, too. That’s more city than wilderness. And a sawed-off pool cue comes in handy: the heavy end, preferably. That’s my advice.

@@snuugumz bear spray works great on bears cougars, mouse, dog and humans. Having a huge can of bear spray makes sense is you are going into the wilderness along with a bear bell and some flares should always be in a solo hike in most of Canada bears and cougars are far more likely to be a threat then other people
TDREXrx9 I suppose I should’ve specified: here in Northern California, we’ve got black bears and they’re more likely to avoid humans. Cougars will attack from a high point- rocks, trees- so don’t hang out under cliffs and trees. The bear spray is a good idea, but definitely NOT the flares. It’s way too dry here. Besides, I believe our friend was concerned about people looking to mess with him. Also, until the weather cools more during the day, watch where you step. Rattlers are cranky bastards.
Your best protection by far is having a well-behaved dog by your side. They can hear and smell things we can’t. My Jack Russell never leaves my side, and he’s trained not to chase game. Best dog I’ve ever had. Bears hate dogs.

10:47 There's a theory in geology circles that large parts of the west coast have migrated north over the past so many odd million years, if true, then those plants could be related to the ones growing in Baja. It'd be interesting to hear from a botanist about the different plant types (that shouldn't be, but are) shared between the Pacific Northwest and the So. California/Baja Mexico regions.
