8 Bizarre Origin Stories of Famous Videogame Characters

- Backstories are an important part of a character, giving you a deeper knowledge of their past that helps you understand their motivation and actions. Sonic the Hedgehog has had several origin stories over the years, but our favourite, and the one that does the best, and most bizarre job of explaining the backstory of Sonic and his arch nemesis Dr Robotnik is the one from the Sonic the Comic story “The Origin of Sonic”.
In this story, Sonic starts out as a regular, brown, albeit super-fast hedgehog and Dr. Ivo Robotnik is a friendly scientist named Ovi Kintobor, which, yes, is Robotnik spelled backwards.
Due to a series of unlikely events which involve breaking the sound barrier and having an egg-related accident with some lab equipment, Sonic becomes the blue hedgehog we all know and are disappointed by today, and Kintobor becomes his rotund adversary Dr. Robotnik/Eggman.
It’s as good a reason as any for a hedgehog to be blue, I suppose. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find out why that fox has two tails.

Link acts a lot like a teenager in Breath of the Wild. He takes selfies, wears clothes that anger his elders, and completely ignores his chores to do whatever he feels like doing at the moment. Which wouldn't be as much of a problem if his chores didn't include "saving the world from Calamity Ganon".

Jane, planning to conquer the planet with her advanced knowledge of physics, with her get a way driver Mike are driving from a heist when they find and pick up Andy, the historian, to be their scribe.

All I know is it involved a failed heist, a plan to take over the world and something with Andy, which led to them living inside an Xbox and then something (I'm assuming RROD) happened that allowed them outside the Xbox.

So that Marowak gives birth to a new Cubone who wears its skull until THAT Cubone evolves and fuses it's own skull to it and so on and so on... So Cubones are wearing all of their ancestors skulls!

Jane: Top secret Alien agent that has invaded human society to learn its weaknesses to exploit them for conquest.

Ellen: Raised by insects, which explains her fear of spiders.
Luke: Son of Darth Andy
Mike's a robot.
No seriously, it was mentioned in 3 different videos (one of the old SotWs, a more recent SotW and one of the lists, not to mention every single hallowe'en video.)

Wait, just Googled it and yes, the Unruly Beard of V. Belascu that had a tendency to affix itself to the chins of unknowing victims while they speak to mock them.

Cubone, Drifbloon and Kadabra are up there. But what about Yamask. Its literally a human spirit. The mask it carries is it's own burial mask. It periodically looks at it and cries. Assumably because a ten year old is now yelling at it when it should be resting in peace.

The Chozo wars must have been like aggresive pin ball, except you know with giant, curled up space chickens instead of ball bearings.

Mr. Anonymous Uh, no. The series has shown time and again that the Chozo were once a warrior race who wanted to conquer the Galaxy. The hidden 11th Chozo memory in Samus Returns reinforces this.
Video games have inured me to bizarre backstories, to the point that I can't tell what's weird anymore.

Does that mean that all cubbies need their mom to die. Like what if they're live longer than their son. Or is it like some ritual of growing up where the cub one has to kill his mom and wear her skull... I think I may be overthinking this

The mother of the Cubones in Lavender Town's Pokemon Tower is a ghost Marowak, who already has a skull on her head. So who knows what the deal is. Maybe it's just a well known legend in the Pokemon workld
Ryan Stark The skulls they wear are actually from Kangaskan. They're more like ceremonial headwear passed down from parent to child.
You've got the theory wrong. The theory is that Cubone is the baby in kangaskan's pouch.
So out of 8 origins stories duke nukem (does not deserve capital letters after forever ) make the most sense to the point, it's actually believable.

A bizarre origin for a video game character is any that doesn't involve dead children, parents, friends, mentors, and/or fellow soldiers. Wow, video game characters must be a sad bunch.

Knowing the Sonic fanbase, there are at least three original "the Hedgehogs" with radiation poisoning and/or chemical poisoning running around.

One time my Grandma was driving me home and we were talking about her childhood music. She was born in the thirties. We ended up singing Jingle Jangle Jingle on the way home. It was incredibly dorky, but also really cool. She passed some time ago now. Maybe a year or two (I lose track of time.) Now whenever I play New Vegas and Jingle Jangle Jingle comes on the radio it makes me think of her and smile.
Spider-Man. Radioactive spider bite. Moon Knight. Died. Fought a werewolf and won brought back by an Egyptian god. Or he's crazy. One of the two!
What about heavy from Team Fortress 2. He lived in a gulag with his family until he killed all the guards and burned it to the ground. I’d say that’s not something that happens every day

Haha y'all mentioned my good ol' Soul Cal main. I used to freak the frick outta my mom playing as Voldo while she played as Kilik. We were an odd family. My oldest brother used Ivy and my other brother used Mitsurugi. By the way, you taught me something new. I had no idea Raphael was a vampire. Also Cervantes wasn't a ghost anymore in Soul Cal V. And he's Ivy's father.

What about the main character of the Pokémon games? Their mom forces them to go choose a Pokémon then sends them off, still a kid into the world by themselves with Pokémon around that want to kill their Pokémon. Thanks a lot mum!

that's what the manga is for :P never read it so couldn't tell you the story, but if i know anything about manga, they had a backstory arc for the main antagonistic organization.

I love how Sonic's backstory explains Sonic, but promptly opens up questions about the rest of the sonic crew. After all, last I checked, enchindas weren't naturally red, and two-tailed foxes can't helicopter them to fly. Samus's backstory I find rather tragic, though, particularly since I'm following an LP of Prime where she's fighting Chozo Ghosts among everything else - i.e., her own FAMILY. Girl needs a hug.

Liked for including Voldo, from one of my favorite classic fighting games. It wasn't an entirely downhill slide (3 was fun) but 4 and 5 pretty much killed it.

I have an old book about Sonic's origin, and it's basically the same as that comic (although it goes into a lot more detail, especially regarding the chaos emeralds and the like). I loved that book when I was a kid.

What about the borderlands characters? they all have pretty wacky and over the top backstories. like axton only being on pandora because he essentially nuked a small colony...because he thought it looked cool.

There was a bunch of stuff in the Q&A episode. As I understand it, they were all involved in making the UK edition of "Inside Xbox", which was Micosoft's in-house video channel that streamed on the Xbox 360. I assume when Microsoft pulled the plug on Inside Xbox in 2012, they started doing it on their own.
Confused Dave Huh, I didn't know that. I knew Jane & Andy (and James?) worked for IXbix, I didn't know they shut it down though. I suppose it makes sense. I've not heard anything of them since I found out the original trio worked for them.
Edit: Mike was also there at the start. I thought he worked for someone else at the time, but maybe I'm wrong. One accidental LinkedIn stalk was enough for me.
I mean, I mostly just put two and two together from watching the q&a video, so don't take my word as gospel. I didn't even know what inside xbox was until I looked it up to write the above comment (I thought it might have been like a magazine or something). But yeah, it folded and Oxbox started at around the same time, so I assume that's what happened.
I really enjoy the horror music over the picture of a level eighteen Cubone, when you've done nothing to hide your level 75 Decidueye. A truly petrifying situation.
I absolutely loved Sonic The Comic. The STC version of Sonic and Robotnik's origin and have pretty much head-cannoned it forever.

Mokujin, from the Tekken series, has a pretty weird origin. It was a 2,000 year old tree before being carved into a training dummy (of all things) that comes to life when "great evil arises". What's weirder is that it's considered the Earth's last line of defense if that evil can't be stopped...which, if it comes to that, pretty much means we're boned.

I kinda want to see them do a video of "5 times games made you do so things so boring you wouldn't want to even do them in real life" could have Airing out books in shenmue 2, delivering mail in kingdom hearts 2, watching your sims go to work, etc. I don't know probably a bad idea but I feel like oxbox would make it better.
Some wierd character backstories would be almost every companion in Lisa: The Painful RPG. middle-aged accountants turned fly themed shopping cart racer who founded a city of garbage, Discount Zodiac Killers who peck their victims to death with a plastic goose head, zenophobic ex football players turned hero of the wastelands, and (my personal favorite) a fish with legs who is a lawyer and can wield submachine guns. Need I go on?

Like the kind that fills up so fast after you stop sprinting that you don't see why the character finds any worth in stopping at all, or the kind that just exists to slow you down after deciding you've gone too fast for too long

With Sonic, they could have made Sonic this curious and anxious fellow that was afraid of Dr. Kcintobor. In that case, Dr. Kcintobor would have given Sonic silver nitrate to cure his nerves, causing him to turn blue (like in The Five People You Meet In Heaven). In that case, it would have at least made a bit more sense.

Bison does have some story to him. He learned of a power called "Soul Power" as a young man but discovered a way to get stronger by purging all positive thoughts when using it, creating "Psycho Power". He killed the one who taught him how to use to demonstrate his ability and how he had surpassed Soul Power's limits. The positivity he purged from himself manifested in corporeal form as Rose and the Psycho Drive from SFA3 is a device he uses to channel other negative energies beyond his own ability to do so into his body.
Bison's power is too great for his body to contain so he needs a stronger host (like Ryu) to transfer his soul into so he can use the full breadth of Psycho Power. When Akuma destroys his body in SF2, his soul attaches itself to Rose and she acts as his host until he can inhabit a new body.

Yay! Sonic the Comic! I used to read that all the time, and personally think if they really want to do it well, another Reboot is needed building on that shared universe. Use the original origin story (which you don't need to learn till the 2nd game). The Chaotix team need to be introduced as they were in the comics and get a good spinoff game, perhaps introduced in the first or 2nd game. And Knuckles coming as a boss in the first game and later friend in later games on the Island.
Mighty, Johnny Lightfoot, Porker Lewis, Tekno the Canary, etc should all make a return, but more importantly I want a Shortfuse Spinoff game (for all those who never read the comics he is a Squirrel changed into a new kind of Badnik wearing indestructible armour with lasers on his wrists) as a third person shooter/adventure. I loved Shortfuse as a kid and a game with him vs Vermin the Cybernik would be awesome.

You can actually find tingle in Minish Cap, where you have to match kinstones with him and his brothers and friend, to unlock the magic boomerang

One of the most bizarre stories behind the origins of a video game is Street Fighter 2. SF2 was originally going to be called "Shoe Sports" but a large number of the development team at Capcom did not like that name, they pointed out that the game was not a sports game and that the title "Shoe Sports" didn't even really make sense and was a very silly name. The issue caused so much friction in the Capcom offices that one day a physical fight broke out between two of the developers, a third dev told the two men not to fight in the office as the place may get damaged, the two men were told to go out and fight in the street. That is what gave the team the idea to call the game "Street Fighter"

idk guys when i was a kid i watched the original land before time and secret of nimh and that shit is DARK and it never gave me nightmares, and i also read every pokedex entry i could get my hands on and even the dark and tragic shit, while i felt sad for the pokemon, was not traumatically disturbing to me. i mean come on.
I have a pretty active imagination. And I know of things that are real and terrifying.
A few points on the Chozo:
- Not only are they space chickens, they're space chickens with the most advanced technology in the galaxy as well as powerful mystical powers.
- Their overall portrayal in the Metroid manga can basically be summed up as, "What if Native American stereotypes were birds, but also had spaceships?" They even have names like Old Bird and Grey Voice.
- Samus being infused with Chozo DNA isn't just an "old games are weird" thing. I actually don't think this was even established until the 2002 manga. And the reasoning is that Samus needed the enhanced strength and durability granted through Chozo DNA to survive on Zebes.
- They're responsible for basically everything bad that happens in the Metroid series, as they created both Mother Brain and the titular Metroids.
- To follow up on the point that they created the Metroids: They did this to fight a deadly parasite on SR388, because obviously creating an even more deadly parasite that would go on to endanger the entire galaxy was a better solution to that problem than just fucking off to another planet.
If you haven't done it already, can you do the top side quests that made us rage quit for a while? Like the theif races in AC.
Fun fact: 1994's "Street Fighter: The Storytelling Game" was an RPG published by White Wolf, the same people who created Vampire: The Masquerade three years earlier in 1991. So there's your obligatory Bloodlines reference of the day.
Darker fact about Cubone: They were once envisioned as the orphans of Kangaskhan. You know the big ol Pokémon with the baby in the pouch? Cubone is a baby Kangaskhan when the mother is killed. It evolves into Marowak because it fuses with their dead mother's skull.
The fact you've used the Sonic the Comic iteration of sonic's origin is just... aaww... I mean... I love this channel.
Coooouuuuld've mentioned how the brotherhood of Metallix later went back in time to prevent the accident and the creation of Robotnik, forcing sonic to travel back in time himself to recreate the accident thereby making him response for Robotnik's existence. Just sayin'.
If we're going by Donkey Kong Country lore, the "Mario" in Donkey Kong (called Jumpman in the original arcade game) and the Mario from the Super Mario series are two different people and Mario is possibly Jumpman's son, just like how Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong from the arcade game.
I had no idea about ANY of that info about Sonic's origin.....and I call myself a Sonic fan.

Overwatch has a few bizarre origin stories for its characters but the one that would probably stand out is Hammond/Wrecking ball, the giant hamster tank.
Basically, Hammond was a hamster who was the subject of genetic experiments conducted at Horizon Lunar Colony (and for some reason, apparently the only non-ape to be involved in those tests, the same ones that produced Winston). This turned Hammond into an escape artist who was always getting out of his cage. Then the scientists' plans to create hyper-intelligent gorrilas backfired because most of them started a violent rebellion (with the exception of Winston), which gave Hammond an opportunity to escape the facility and travel to Earth.
Then things get even weirder because he happens to land in Australia (which in the Overwatch timeline is an irradiated wasteland dominated by Mad Max-style outlaws), where he ends up building his own mech suit and becomes a renowned champion in the Queen of Junkertown's gladiatorial arena, which is how he became "Wrecking Ball."
I want all subsequent Pokemon games to play that music every time cubone appears on screen.
