- As with any creative project, the final versions of videogames often differ wildly from their first trailers. Remember when 2011’s Duke Nukem Forever was originally announced? Maybe not, because it’s entirely possible to be a young adult human who was not even alive when the game first started development.
Duke Nukem Forever took roughly forever to develop, hence the name, so it’s hardly surprising that, over the course of that development, it changed dramatically. And we’re not just talking about changing dramatically from a game everyone wanted to play to a game no-one wanted to play.
Initial trailers included thrilling shootouts from the back of moving trucks, riding minecarts like Indiana Jones, low-flying fighter jets and destructible buildings, all elements that were conspicuous by their absence when the game finally came out in 2011.
Similarly, the first ever trailer for what would become the first Halo game gives us a glimpse of what could have been: a surreal parallel universe where Halo was a third-person shooter that launched on Mac computers.
However, the year after that first Halo trailer, Microsoft bought Bungie, and the year after that, in 2001, the game launched as Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox, with an entirely different plot and no online play because Xbox Live wasn’t even invented yet, if you can imagine such a thing.

The spy from TF2 was made from a glitch that happened in the first game that made one (specific) class change color from their normal team color. So if you were on the blue team and had the class equipped, you would turn red. Just a cool thing

Mildly surprised Bioshock: Infinite isn't on this list.
If you look at the early trailers and interviews, they had a very different idea in mind when they first started working on it.

What about the first trailer for Aliens: Colonial Marines? The first trailer implied it WOULDN'T be terrible.

Can't. While I was forced out of office only a year into my second term it legally counted as a resignation which means it qualifies as having served that second term. Also since I'm legally dead I'm ineligible to hold any public office.

Master Chief in pajamas? Maybe his power armor IS his pajamas and he's just too lazy to take it off. Makes you think.
I mean, he goes into cryo wearing it even though it causes freezerburn on your skin, and that's the only sleep he got between July 2552 and July 2557.
Master Chief does take off his power armor (Halo 4 ending) and while in cyro he gets anti-freezerburn drugs.
it's the poncho he's wearing in the first trailer for halo 5, which was what i was expecting to see in this list (not disappointed about knowing the original one qualified though.)

I remember being weirdly excited about SC: Conviction was first announced and the tech for the physics-focused gameplay was shown off. The final game arguably turned out a lot better than the emo-tinged version we nearly got, but I still wonder what it might have been like had we gotten something more like the earlier draft.

I'm just happy that I mostly ignore trailers and if I watch them forget their content. This way I was able to enjoy a game like Infinite without any problems.

Borderlands. The original game had a completely new style, and even changed the main focus on the game! With the original siren becoming the baddie. Oh and also had a funky sound track to boot.

Right when Steve Jobs said, "so here's the very first look at Halo!:" it suddenly cut to an ad for AFK Arena, and I looked up at the screen and I was like WOW, this really IS different than the end product.
Isn't it amazing how Resident Evil 4 didn't only become an astounding game, it also helped create two other cool games/game series? All because of the various ideas Capcom made.

List idea: 7 times we had to fall for obvious traps coz story.
Every time Patches the Hyena kicks me into a crevasse he cracks himself up, but it's starting to get a bit old
So basically Resident Evil 4 not only produced itself, the process of making it birthed two other much-beloved games! Man, I don't know what magic was in the air during that development process, but I wish it would turn up again.
Master Chief does have pajamas. He wears them over the power armour duh.
you guys should bring back the time you guys explain game science with real science like the bioshock Infinite.
i remember Sam being nicknamed Hobo Sam when that version of Conviction was shown, I also remember Conviction being compared a lot with Assassin's Creed during its golden years. Funny how a lot of (the least liked SC game) Conviction's mechanics would become part of other Ubisoft games for years to come
Sorta like Prince of Persia before it too was abandoned by Ubisoft.

Wouldn't compare The Bureau with Gears of War, it was much more like a Mass Effect clone. It had the conversation options, cover shooting and squad commands just like it.
Splinter cell conviction is one of my favourite games, glad they changed it
I find the idea of Master Chief in power armor hilarious, imagining him in like childlike pajamas (star patterned) and bunny slippers while wearing his intimidating helmet and a gun next to his bed is great

About Duke Nukem Forever, people just wanted more of the same, but with modern graphics, and that what the developers should have done instead of trying to revolutionize the genre...
Funny enough, I didn't bought Conker Bad Fur Day because I thought it was just more of the same, now that the loose cartridge sells at more than 250$ I regret my younger self decision...
I actually liked how XCom Declassified turned out. I didn't know the series before and I ended up loving the whole thing :)
Having played the strategy games since the 90s, Declassified is the only game I don't like.
Hook-man seemed to have made his way into the Lost in Nightmare DLC for Resident Evil 5 living in Spencer's european mansion, so he wasn't lost forever.

Resident Evil 4 was my introduction to horror games. It will always have a place in my heart. When it was in development I was really young so I didn't know about E3 or any of that. Fascinating how much it changed...I'm glad they canned the hallucination thing with cliche horror tropes. It would've been amusing but not quite the same atmosphere. Leon technically did become "possessed" but it was the parasite trying to take over his body.
I was so excited by the xcom concept. I loved every idea about it. I lost track of it and eventually forgot about it. I recently found the game at a discount. Apon playing, I realized I had already played it lol. That says a lot about the game.

That original Conviction sounded so promising back when it was revealed. Remember installing that trailer on my 360.
Not only was there a boot polishing mini game, but there was also a cleaning everything mini game and even a getting yelled at by Sergeant Major mini game.

@Dave -- Doom 3, the original Prey and Unreal II were so (graphically) similar that sometimes I'm not sure which of the memorable game scenes was from which game. All pretty good games in their day though.
The new Prey has nothing to do with Prey 2. They just re-use the name.

Maybe not the game itself but the characters of Bioshock Infinite went through a good scrubbing to become the ones we know and love today. Remember when Elizabeth looked a little like a Ukranian spy, and Booker was more of a couch sitting, football watching dad? Good times.
Nicole Amodio actually the whole game itself did kind of change actually. For example most of the enemies are completely different and the story itself. Check out the old demos actually it's really infteresting. I wanted the 2011 e3 demo out of all versions honestly.

I would love to play that original Splinter Cell! Final Fight was a favourite of mine back in the day.
Mike seems to be the go-to guy for vindictive letdowns.
I would have liked to play that XCOM game.
I remember that old Splinter Cell: Conviction stuff. That game seemed more interesting than the final Conviction game (since it emphasized social stealth over traditional "sneak through the shadows" stealth). Sam looking like a hobo was also cool, made you wonder what happened to him after DA (where I think he was labeled a rogue asset).

this is basically a video on games that escaped development hell.
I Am Alive was originally a big budget open world game with a protagonist called Adam protecting his family. The visual style was starkly different from the released game as well. Through its tortured development history we wound up with a generally linear game with an unnamed protagonist, no family, and a much 'dirtier' art style (fittingly so I'd say) The general post-unspecified-calamity setting persisted but almost everything else about the game changed

Well, it's good that the Resident Evil series eventually got to use that "house full of knife-wielding hallucinatory dolls" setpiece. Happy for them.

I actually ENJOYED Duke Nukem Forever. 'Course, this is with a general love for games and no familiarity with Duke Nukem 3D at the time (Played it since, SPECTACULAR game). DNF was an average shooter. In trying to make fun of every other shooter, it BECAME every other shooter, and while that's not necessarily bad, that's not necessarily good either. It's not very replayable, it's not very impressive, but it's not very bad like everyone else would want you to believe. It's just... average.
It was exactly what I thought it should be.
I never understood the hate it got.
The Duke Nukem 3D was bloody amazing. I had it on my phone for a while, but it got taken down from play store...
So what did you guys think of the Serious Sam series? I enjoyed playing those, I must admit.

Midway through the video, I'd LOVE to play that weird castle version of RE4. It looks haunting as all hell, and damn fun to play.

Over-the-top 90's movie style macho-man B.S, tongue-n-cheek humor and a smattering of T&A. It was _EXACTLY_ what I expected it to be after playing 3D and Zero Hour back in the day..
I had Halo only on PC, so I totally played it as a 3PS, because mods and shit.
Also, the Custom Edition maps are still fucking amazing because the entire SDK was open so people added everything from new guns to the Tachikomas from _Ghost in the Shell_

Edit: also, "Sam Fisher looks like he's spent the years since Double Agent sleeping on a park bench" - my first thought is he looked like Andy at the start of Oxbox.

I remember these guys from "I got a message" where people would send these guys questions about video games.
i always wanted to play the early version of re4 or re 3.5, just to see what was the story and the game look scary and felt like a mix of old school survival horror and modern survival horror(well modern for that time)
Meanwhile, there's Final Fantasy 15, where the main theme, character designs, Nifelheim soldiers, core gameplay, and design of the Citadel remained the same after 10 years and a total reboot of production. Out of any game with a crazy action scene in the cinematic trailer, FF15 is the only one that delivered, with its sword teleporty thing.
