I’m born and raised in Chicago, you have to get your Italian beef extra dipped with the cheese sauce on it, the Maxwell polishes is amazing. No state can top Chicago food ❤
Hi Ashley, I know many places server beef sandwiches with the beef au jus on the side and its referred to as a French dip but in Chicago we ordered it either dry, wet or dipped. Dry - The beef is pulled from the juice with tongs, most of the juice is allowed to drip off, and it is put into a roll. No juice is added, and the sandwich is about as dry as it can get. Wet - The beef is pulled from the juice and immediately put into a roll, leaving the beef “wet”. Then they add another spoonful of beef juice over the top after this step. Dipped - The beef is pulled from the juice, stuffed into a roll, and then the entire roll is dipped into the beef juice, making a soggy, delicious sandwich.
Yes and Italian beef typically has Italian seasoning And peppers included in the cooking, where as I believe a french dip is seasoned with onions and seasoning, no peppers :) but I suppose it could be different region to region

I've lived in IL my whole life & it is called running a dog through the garden. The beef is best dipped. The bread is soggy but amazing. Their ribs and burgers are also amazing, and never forget either a slice of chocolate cake or a chocolate cake shake. You can never go wrong with Portillo's.
Chicago native here 🤚🏾 I’ve been eating Portillo’s since I was 12 (I’m 41 now) and I’ve worked at two locations (the first one was across from the Rock N Roll McDonald’s where R.Kelly picked up his happy meals) and the other was on Canal and Taylor! That cheese sauce is called “liquid gold” 😩🙏🏾
I love Portillo's. We have them in Tampa so it's crazy to hear you don't have them in Toledo. Their Shakes and deserts are phenomenal too. I think it's called fast casual dining because you order at the counter.

Hi Ashley, if you want to get bread just like that to take home you can find it at many of of our Chicagoland grocery stores, especially at Jewel/Osco as well as Walmart, they might even sell it at Walmart in Toledo. The brand is S. ROSEN'S FRENCH ROLLS (Italian beef rolls). they come pre sliced in either a 6 count pk or 12 count pk of mini rolls and either are around $6 a package. And they are almost always sold on the shelfs in front of the deli counter.

But you shoulda tried their fries with the cheese- idk what is they’re just crinkle fries but they’re always perfectly salted and I think they fry them in the beef grease or something but they are so fuggin good and aromatic. And the Italian beef is even better as a combo sandwich- they add a grilled Italian sausage in there and add their sweet peppers those are so flavorful cuz they’re cooked in the spices like oregano and other stuff. It’s for fatties but it’s the best. Their chocolate cake is also delish.
