Did the Pilots of this Doomed Plane Fail to Pressurize their Cabin? 😨 Air Disasters | Smithsonian

  • Normally, cabin pressurization takes place automatically on a commercial flight: as a jet climbs, its engines force air into the plane. On August 15, 2005, this didn’t happen on Helios 522-the question is why?

    A loss of cabin pressurization incapacitated the crew, leaving the aircraft flying on autopilot until it ran out of fuel, and crashed near Grammatiko, Greece. It was the deadliest aviation accident in Greek history.

      Yes it was and if there would of been one more person in the cabin they could of at least crash landed the flight.

      He's beyond a hero. He steered the plane away from Athens into an unpopulated area. Many more could have died had it not been for his extraordinary intervention. Damn shame we lost him too. I suppose it's better this way because, at least he checked out with his girlfriend and no telling the brain damage he suffered too.

    In Wikipedia about Helios 522, it was not only the flight attendant who was conscious, his girlfriend as well and she also helped him to save the plane.
    "At 11:49, flight attendant Andreas Prodromou entered the cockpit and sat down in the captain's seat, having remained conscious by using a portable oxygen supply. His girlfriend, Haris Charalambous, was also seen in the cockpit helping Prodromou try to control the aircraft."

      It was a similar crash to that of American 965 that crashed on its final approach to Cali, Columbia however the only difference was all passengers and crew were aware but only 4 (5 but one died in hospital) passengers survived none of the crew did if Helios 522 didn't hit the mountain at that angle Andreas could have survived it altogether and possibly be able to tell his frightening story also there was a risk of a fire but if Helios 522 didn't hit that mountain like that it's likely the fuel tanks would not puncture and he would ultimately survive

      However one thing makes me doubt how could a plane fly on its own while making those 4 specific turns I believe they did that right and left turn on purpose then did the right turn later on and then the left turn then set the pressurisation to manual but again we have no evidence to back that theory up. It's still a mystery until we can find the aircraft and solve the greatest aviation mystery since Air France 447 back in 2009

      @raffycastle1224 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@uhwetair7265 that could be considered a factor but I believe it's because he was fighting both a lack of oxygen and a plane that is pretty much doomed and not because he didn't have any experience on flying but because he was running out of time and he knew he was not going to get to any airport if he was going to die in a few mins. He did everything he could, it was completely unavoidable for Andreas to make it to any airport with very little time without any oxygen pressured set to Manual but it was completely preventable this accident if the Pressure for Oxygen switch was set to automatic not Manual

    • @null-0
      @null-0 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. He was not a pilot.
      2. He was fighting Hypoxia from the lack of oxygen.
      3. One of the engines was out of fuel. That's why they mentioned the plane was circling in the sky in the full video. Thus he knew he didn't have enough time to land. The best he could do was avoid crashing into populated areas.
