  • This week we made our first ever no dig bed on the homestead ready for spring. First we have to make it through a storm and collect as many materials as possible to begin our next project.
    Enjoy!

Try growing squash, zucchini and pumpkins to grow in the summer garden. Great you got the wheel barrel working. You guys have a great vision for your garden.

Opposite your grapes next to the railway line, I would plant climbing permanent plants. They will provide a bit of privacy and shade. They will grow in big pots. And you can buy some that have really nice aromatic flowers. Much better than planting peas.
    The herb garden sounds great.

Marigolds especially African are great companions for tomatoes xx

Make sure horse manure is dotted down before you use it. Also chicken poo bedding is a great add to your compost. I grow dwarf beans / French beans in a large lot for better water retention. If you put cardboard in the bottom of your pots, it really helps with water retention. Can't wait to see how you flourish this year xxx

Yh it’s from a local company who have already broken it down ready for using in the garden so should be fine 😊thanks for the cardboard tip!

I know! She has started doing it recently. I think where she used to play with biscuits she got all her energy out but now she gets the zoomies 😅

Great plans for your garden, you should consider an easier way of watering, like drip or gravity fed. It would make it far easier to keep up in the heat.👍

I know. We really want drip irrigation but I’m just not sure we will manage it with renovating the shack as well this year. Hopefully next winter we can start looking into installing it. 🤞

Good thing you have lots of space to plant. Perhaps once you expand to the other terraces you can get an ibc water container to help water. So many possibilities. Sounds like fun. I have a brown thumb, so no advice from me. 😊

For sure! I’m hoping when we renovate the shed we can put some kind of water catchment on ad well as on the house/carport. Would be nice to add irrigation from the water we collect in the future 😊

The cats will be smelling the rodents that were in the field and storage shed that you bought the hay/straw from.

I hadn’t thought of that. Lucky still loves it over a week later. We have caught them napping on it a few times since

Have heard putting crushed up egg shells in the hole of your tomatoes is beneficial.

We have been adding into our compost for future projects but might set some aside for tomato season 😊

He keeps talking about chopping it off but I have curly hair envy 😅 I think it will come off for the summer though 😢

Please be mindful that any moisture from your no dig bed against the house wall will cause rising damp inside the house. 🙁

Ahhh we will leave small gaps going forward. Thanks for the tip. There is a drainage system in that area for heavy rain so hopefully we get away with that one 😅🙃
