That's a great explanation that I don't think I have heard elsewhere. Also, in the tactical reasons, the Eagles said in the Hobbit that they do not stray too far from the Mountains because humans tend to shoot at them. Sounds a bit risky...

Another great tactical reason! It seems that you only need to seriously consider the issue for a few minutes and some of the fun but trivial hypotheticals disappear.

It's not about the destination, but the journey.

Or perhaps it’s about the destination AND the journey. Both are vital.

@@MrDavidBarr Yeah, I see. Every story has to have a plot and an ending I suppose.

From writers perspective: yes, absolutely. On the other hand, none of the characters would ever say it like that. This standpoint is the perspective from the outside and not an intrinsic motivation.

@@sofia_optior Yeah, but characters don’t write stories. It’s a logical flaw in writing bc writing should be creative and logical at the same time.

@@sofia_optior If I was a writer instead of having eagles: When Gandalf was trapped on the tower and caught the moth to whisper in its ear he could’ve been telling the moth to tell all other moths to come to his rescue and a gigantic swarm of moths come carry him down just barely breaking his fall about 500-1000 ft from the tower where Shadow would be hiding to escape. Also, where the eagles rescued Frodo and Sam on the volcano at the end: it could’ve been that Gandalf found them stranded and he cast a spell to elongate his staff from where he was to the rock Frodo and Sam were at so they could barely make it across.

Also there is no way anyone would expect a hobbit to walk into mount doom more or less un-aided so that was the element of suprise!

Great line of thinking and well verbalized! I don’t recall any mention of shortcuts (via eagle or otherwise) in Campbell’s model of the Hero’s Journey!

I like the idea of beeing a Stewart in my life. I think we all have our duties and therefore we need to learn the virtues to master them..

Indeed! The idea of being a steward should be exciting to us. A series of inconveniences rightly conceived.
