Most incredible live performer I’ve ever seen. In West Germany, 1972, at a small movie theater in Ludwigsburg with a stage. My mates and I went out to hear some music, no idea what we were in for. I was a southern kid, a fan of the Allman Bros, Marshall Tucker, Wet Willie. I’d never heard of RG. Three guys came out, no warm up, and Rory took the roof off the place. That night has remained a vivid memory for more than fifty years. I’m blessed to have seen him. He left us way too early.
Top 3 in my magazine Sticking Water I think SRV is No.1 for me , but man I'd loved to have seen em both on stage at the same time. Not a pissing competition, just an appreciation of skill and talent. Both amazing, along with a few others. I think my top 3 is SRV, RG & BBK
I'm nearly 40, only heard of R.G this last month. I don't know much about music, but he sounded ahead of his time, which might explain why I'd not heard of them until now.
Some guy named Jimi basically said Rory is the best, when folks say under rated that just tells me they have no clue. They weren't around back then. He was on at all the bars I went to.
You mean don't say he's overrated. The greatest guitarist ever & a truly modest gentleman: no rock star excess or posturing. Saw Rory in the National Stadium Dublin New Year 72.
Why can't appreciation be appreciated? Some artist will be talked about for way longer than they deserve for half ass lyrics and sloppy unoriginal compositions. While some artists like Rory will leave too soon and offer so much. I don't think it's a crime at all to call and guitarist under appreciated. So who cares. I'm confident my point stands though. He faded away. He definitely isn't as appreciated as he deserves to still be. Just like muddy waters, howling wolf, and bb king.
I was extremely privileged to interview Rory Gallagher for CBC Radio One back in 1973 here in Calgary. One of the nicest, most soft spoken, and truly humble gentlemen in the business. He was just so easy going, pleasant and down to earth with his trade mark plaid shirts, jeans and all. Refreshingly real. I recall being a bit shocked by how old, weather beaten, rusty, and paint stripped his fender Stratocaster guitar really was. That kind of blew me way. "You're not going on stage with that beat up old thing are you?" Lol. "Yup. Every night. That's my baby...you'll see". You see - for Mr. Gallagher it was just "the" tool to get the job done right with. His chosen tool for the rough trade that he was in. No need for it to be all polished and shiny like. Tone and feel is what mattered. And with Blues being a very emotionally raw, no bullshit, and honest medium, it all fit together perfectly. This working man's music came alive in those hands of his like no one we'd ever heard before. (Or since for that matter.) When he picked that thing up and plugged it in- magic started exploding everywhere. Shivers on top of goose bumps all day long. Lol. Absolutely brilliant. Needless to say, we got along superbly throughout the process. Rory was a natural conversationalist which made my job as a rock journalist so much easier. He was the furthest thing from the typical egotistical prima donna that I was so accustomed to dealing with. Refreshing is the word. Is it any wonder then, that his popularity has enjoyed such remarkable longevity? Still a mighty force to be reckoned with well into the 21st century. This Irish blues legend lives on in our hearts and minds. No doubt about that as evidenced here once again today. All you have to do is read the posts below. That should tell you something. He's still missed by millions of adoring fans worldwide. There once was a Rory Gallagher and there once was a Jimi Hendrix. Two sides of the same coin. Both immutable and immortal. So let's raise a pint shall we? RIP Rory Gallagher!!!. And thanks so very much for the great music, memories, pictures, and especially those old CBC audio tapes that I shall cherish forever. Till death comes to reunite us once again brother!. Cheers and God Bless!
I took him to the dentists after he broke a tooth on stage in Derby in 1973...funny the things you remember...was a very nice guy and a great bluesman.

Rory Gallagher and the boys in his band are completely to blame for my six brothers and I have to live with a bad reputation all of those years. We followed Rory and his boys from the very early days from town to town and got to see them play many many times (not enough times) all over the lands. We stayed out late, come home early mornings, went to work and talked about nothing but a rocking gig that we saw the night before. Our dear neighbours were very concerned about the reputation that we were getting, they said we were rockers and blues boys and we were up to no good, we were long hair and that we would all wind up in jail. So far none of us have never been inside of a jail, but we still have all of Rory's albums and we played all of the time.

@@alancanham2956 thank you Alan, We were the very lucky people to have got to see Rory and his band play many times, I can recall each and every gig and concert, they were all brilliant and different, Take care
I am certainly jealous of all the times you saw Rory playing live, I only had the privilege to see him play once in 1973 in Rotterdam. It was in the time of the oil crises and the Dutch gov't had commanded that people were not allowed to drive a car on Sundays, due to gasoline shortage. So we all had to go back by train, for this was a late night gig. When Rory and the band heard about this, they played until the first trains would leave the stations, with only twice a half hour of rest. It was the best concert I have ever been to. After the gig had ended me and my friends walked to the trainstation. When we arrived there was a crowd of almost 150 people who had to go our way too. We lived about 150 km from the place where Rory played. We all got in 2 train compartments, all Rory fans, singing his songs out loud, sharing sandwiches, fun cigarets (in those days smoking in the train was allowed) and drinks. Funny I remember all that happened that evening so well. One of the best experiences of my life. The trip home had never seemed so short.

I'm in my 60s, never listened much to Rory in those days. Too young to understand the blues. But give it time and you mature, I'm here now. Time to revisit the past, never too old to learn.
Absolutely!!!! The Blues is what begot music. Even within my family to the British coming here in the 1600's. They too created from their times into the blues. My ancestor became a well known church hymnal creator.
@@lisaweaver986 Perhaps some of my ancestors knew some of yours. On my mother's side, there was an accomplished Scottish violinist, John Skinner, 1890s/1900s. Further back, another John Skinner was close friends with Robert Burns. A stone marker still stands in the family house yard where the Tullochgorum Tree once stood. Anyhow, Rory's music is truly captivating and somewhat of a portal where new friends step through.
I'm 19 and I'm listening to blues, blues rock like Gary Moore,Peter Green for 7 years. I'm a metalhead but blues is the escape from the harsh tracks at night
Trust me his music will live on. I am in my 50's who has a twin 15 yr old twin son who loves and plays his music on his guitars (I did not know of Rory until my son). Recently, my son was honored to play with two of the original band members that played with Rory here in Portland, Oregon in Dec 2018. Rory's music will forever live on and on..
In 1970, my sister and brother in law had this album as a demo, while they were graduating from San Diego State. I wore out that vinyl from over use. I still don’t know why it never became a huge hit.
For me, Rory was really amazing. The most extraordinary blues guitarrist I had ever hear. Full ofÑ blues and soul singer and outasigth guitar player, I have his original Taste second vinyl record called On The Boards, what a beautiful album. Also 10 of his best cd recordings, remastered. I love Jimi Hendrix two first albums, but about Rory I love all his albums. About psychedelic music I love too much these bands, Love, Spirit, The Outlaw Blues Band. In progressive rock I love these phenomenal three bands, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Jade Warrior.
Jimi and Rory always used te wisest of words when they spoke which they learned for their total dedication and very hard work, They sold their lives to their music so we could enjoy their music forevermore. God blessed Rory & Jimi, I was told by a person in the know that Jimi & Rory were and are Gods most favorite rocking guitar players along with Phil Lynott who is his most favorite songwriter/story singer, it must have something to do with those 3 boys Celtic blood
Good band full stop not just the front man , unsung heroes for any of the upfront and solo musicians on account there's no i in team. You like my guitar playing though i take it , what do you think of Bad Penny ??
Reminds me of Led Zeppelin's Since I've Been Loving You. Both are blues rock masterpieces with raw emotion and stunning guitar! It's amazing how two giants could channel the same spirit in such distinct yet similar ways!
I learned about RG from my father, when I was 9 years old, in the 70s. Today at 57 years old, my father is no longer here, but the memories remain forever. Listening to RG is to remember again the good music of my father and my childhood.
The more I listen to this amazing man, WHAT IN THE WORLD 🌎 HAPPENS TO MY HEART ♥️. It skips beats, rate gets a little higher than usual, i guess I’m feeling the music, feeling something. I simply love and adore this very special man. Makes me sick when I think about how careless the doctors were when giving him this medicine that made his liver shut down. Heard that in an interview. I always thought it was from drinking but apparently the meds he was on caused his liver to shut down. Now I heard this so who really knows. All I know is this, it breaks my fucking heart that he had to leave us so soon at such a young age, hey 47 is young and the older I get the more I see that. Only one Rory and I love him with all my heart and soul. 💯🔊🤘🏼💀🤘🏼🔊💯
Rory was a humble Irish man he was gifted the traditional Irish music and was well loved for his delicate and intimate knowledge of its intricacy many Irish trad musicians play blues many Seán nós singers sing soul. Music unites ... When someone asked Jimmy Hendricks "what it was like being the best guitarist in the world?" his reply was "why don't you ask Rory Gallagher " judging from that answer they were obviously respected friends and credit to Hendrix it was the best Irish style compliment to say that! Hope the two are jamming on up there
The attention Rory received from his loyal followers, throughout his career, was probably all the recognition he needed. Not a man for stardom or filling arenas where the music doesn't come into its own.
When we talk about Irish bands, most people mention U2; I just think of Thin Lizzy and Rory. He is still a guitar god, who has influenced many musicians. Rest in Power, Rory!!!
Been listening to Rory since 1973..I never get tired of that great guitar playing...A true master and a gentleman, that never took the commercial route but stayed true to his art ..respect
@Dfw Fqdefqw Because "automatically", you think you knew Rory more than Henk Vinke did? Please tell us your story and how you knew Rory in such an intimate manor. We'd all love to hear your story. Waiting.......
No he played for a living, to make money. The difference being he was not all about the money, which also means he wouldn't sell himself out just to make money. That's why he didn't put out singles, he was adamantly against it. He remained true to his nature which was important to him. That's the distinction, he certainly did play for the money, but he wanted it HIS way. He spoke of this during some of his interviews.
I remember driving my 55 - 2 door Chevy Wagon there was nothing louder and sounded so strong than Rory's blues rock back in 1975 now at the age of 63 I've had young men ask who I'm listening to I just tell them Rory Gallagher and the look on their faces how's that.
Rory had the face of an Irish Angel and could play like the devil's hell hound was on his trail. He didn't play for money, he didn't play for fame, he played because the music lived inside him fighting for a way out. He was a conduit for the mainline of the blues.
Absolutely right ! His playing captures the emotions of this wonderful music. I've been a fan since the 1980's but we'll be listening to Rory in centuries to come.
As many people have said, Rory was a true gent. Soft spoken, humble but supremely talented. I saw him twice in the 70's, and got to meet him backstage. An experience I have never forgotten. Rest in peace Rory. The music world is a lesser place without you.
I met a kid in the bar a few years ago and when he told me he was from Cork, Ireland, I commented on what a huge Rory Gallagher fan I was. He went absolutely bananas, telling me how Rory is still a national hero in Ireland and Cork in particular. Bought me Irish whiskeys all night too!
Rory is jamming with Jimi right now and the album will be released shortly and by God we need it badly. Thank you Rory for all your music and associated good times.
Yes it is a shame Rory never got the same recognition world wide as other "stars" of his day. But something tells me he was fine with it. Awsome talented guy that made music from his soul.
@@ronnyp6934 And only underrated because most of us had never heard or heard of him due to American radio tactics. this is sweeet stuff. Thanks for the post!
Jimi Hendrix send on air that Rory was the best guitarist in the world. The Rolling Stones wanted him to be their second guitarist before Ronnie Wood joined. Rory had to turn them down because he was about to start a tour in Japan that sold more tickets than the Stones could hope to and at that time his band was the biggest band in the world at the time based on tickets and albums sold. So I don't think he was ever under rated. More like lost to time.
I met and chatted with Rory Gallagher when he was in Cleveland many moons ago (maybe 1975?) He was sitting alone at a table at The Harbor Inn bar in the flats. He must have been in town for a show. Beyond talented guitarist.

This could go for another 30 minutes and I'd still be into it - fantastic.
Wish it would !
Absolutely bro
A lot of live stuff in those days would
Right on brothers. This is nice and jam bandish! Amazing and chill musicians, the singer has an awesome voice which totally seals the deal!
Tartan shirt and an old battered up strat . What a complete musician. No air's or Grace's no bullshit just pure music. Fuckin genius 👏 🙌.
My favorite blues player. Other than BB King this guy's tone was unreachable. What a talent. Just listen to that tone, man. Goddann
I'm in my 60s, never listened much to Rory in those days. Too young to understand the blues. But give it time and you mature, I'm here now. Time to revisit the past, never too old to learn.
yes, never too old to learn; quite right you are. I heard him for the first time while I am 51. learned now - amazingly!
Absolutely!!!! The Blues is what begot music. Even within my family to the British coming here in the 1600's. They too created from their times into the blues. My ancestor became a well known church hymnal creator.
@@lisaweaver986
Perhaps some of my ancestors knew some of yours.
Heard him the first time in 1971 with his Number "Laundromat". To me he is the best, the greatest of all times.
My first love
Bloody hell nearly thirty years since this great artist died!
In 1970, my sister and brother in law had this album as a demo, while they were graduating from San Diego State. I wore out that vinyl from over use. I still don’t know why it never became a huge hit.
Best part of our times 😮 such a beautiful soul ❤
I love this kind of blues.
Rory is the 13th Olympian God! Warmest greetings from Greece.

EXACTLY
I can see why Hendrix considered Rory the best guitarist my top 5 ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The most fluent guitarist and performer ever.
Rory is a legend. I saw him several times at the stadium in Dublin back in the seventies. Best concerts I had the privilege to be ever at.
Why thank you glad you enjoyed them.
It's amazing how two giants could channel the same spirit in such distinct yet similar ways!
one of the most gifted people this world has ever seen
I learned about RG from my father, when I was 9 years old, in the 70s. Today at 57 years old, my father is no longer here, but the memories remain forever. Listening to RG is to remember again the good music of my father and my childhood.
Great Sound. I have tears in my eyes. Unglaublich we said in Germany.
This is on the face of people who do not take pentatonic scale seriously.
Im from Ireland and Rory doesnt get the recognition he deserves, sad Rory Galllagher RIp a top top guitarist,
Geez, this dude could play guitar. Never got to see him, but if there's a heaven we'll meet one day. RIP Rory

One of the greatest and most underrated musicians I’ve ever listened to. His music will never fade.
Incredible guitarist, one of those lay down eyes shut and feel it tunes!
Rory Gallagher was simply amazing.🖤🤘
When you play from the soul, then it must be divine...🎶🎸🖤
Soul, guts and genius!
Сильнейший гитарист, блюзмен!!! 💕
Hands down probably one of the best blues songs out there
Definately JT.
Right on! This track is absolutely epic.
Απίστευτος.... Αθάνατος Rory Ghallagher! R.I.P.
Hope the two are jamming on up there
Rory was my Cousin, and I can confirm he was a total legend
Thanks for the nice recording broadcast. The legend is among us thanks to TH-cam music.
Rory had the uncanny ability to fuse Celtic, rock, blues, and Jazz into his own unique musical language.
Rory is and always will be a Guitar God, this track is sublime and nothing more needs said. rip
The shortest 9:22 min of my life. Time just flew...
This guy was one of a kind
The attention Rory received from his loyal followers, throughout his career, was probably all the recognition he needed. Not a man for stardom or filling arenas where the music doesn't come into its own.
I am 59 yrs old now, grew up listening to Rory, Still one of the best ever!!
When we talk about Irish bands, most people mention U2; I just think of Thin Lizzy and Rory. He is still a guitar god, who has influenced many musicians. Rest in Power, Rory!!!
Me too along with late Gary Moore

The Irish are well-known for having poetry in their soul, and this fella exemplifies this through his rare gift for blues. Beautiful. Thanks Don
Rory Gallagher was a bloody force of nature!!
Been listening to Rory since 1973..I never get tired of that great guitar playing...A true master and a gentleman, that never took the commercial route but stayed true to his art ..respect
When they grow commercial they sell their soul, literally...
This is my first time, it won't be my last! 👌
" The last of the independents ".
He has never played for the money. He has always played with his heart.
Those are the true gifted artist.
@Dfw Fqdefqw Because "automatically", you think you knew Rory more than Henk Vinke did?
Please tell us your story and how you knew Rory in such an intimate manor.
We'd all love to hear your story.
Waiting.......
@Dfw Fqdefqw So... was he a gifted artist, a professional, a hobbyist, or ...?
No he played for a living, to make money. The difference being he was not all about the money, which also means he wouldn't sell himself out just to make money. That's why he didn't put out singles, he was adamantly against it. He remained true to his nature which was important to him. That's the distinction, he certainly did play for the money, but he wanted it HIS way. He spoke of this during some of his interviews.
@@jakmak1199 Not even his souped up Ford? :), but how do you know he dropped acid?

What a talent. 🎸
I remember driving my 55 - 2 door Chevy Wagon there was nothing louder and sounded so strong than Rory's blues rock back in 1975 now at the age of 63 I've had young men ask who I'm listening to I just tell them Rory Gallagher and the look on their faces how's that.
If this doesn't touch your soul, nothing can. My God, what a monster player, the best ever!
Very well put
Rory was touched by his musical muse and followed her home.
@@annwachter5985 That's beautiful.

i met rory in manchester with my sons and my nephew he took us backstage to meet the band .we will cherish that memory .god bless you rory.
Simply no one better
As many people have said, Rory was a true gent. Soft spoken, humble but supremely talented. I saw him twice in the 70's, and got to meet him backstage. An experience I have never forgotten. Rest in peace Rory. The music world is a lesser place without you.
I met a kid in the bar a few years ago and when he told me he was from Cork, Ireland, I commented on what a huge Rory Gallagher fan I was. He went absolutely bananas, telling me how Rory is still a national hero in Ireland and Cork in particular. Bought me Irish whiskeys all night too!
Its so good that I cry
Rory is jamming with Jimi right now and the album will be released shortly and by God we need it badly.
Thank you Rory for all your music and associated good times.
YESYESYES 100TIMES A MINUTE
Yes! Beautiful. This has basic blues undertones, every guitarist has played, each making it their own! Rorys blues is the best!
One of the most underrated guitarist.
Not by other guitarist..
I’m sure we all rate him pretty well.
The Blues just doesn,t get any better than this,,,,,,,That guitar and delivery of lyrics are a world of emotion..
Love Rory's playing, Taste and everything else.❤❤❤❤
Never got to see him, but I had all his albums, incredible musician .
