@@scotttildis the nationally televised tv revenue not shared? Green Bay and the surrounding areas support their team generationally. It’s not comparable to the As who didn’t fill their stadium when they were good.
@blakecheboygan green bay also has a strong history of winning lol I'm a extreme casual to baseball but I don't appreciate moneyball it looked cool for that season but you gotta adapt as a owner in a league like baseball where anything can happen
What the Dodgers are doing is shining a light on the reality of the modern MLB. It’s a league where 8 teams can afford multiple 30 mil a year talents, 8-10 can afford 1-2 and the rest cant afford any. It creates, essentially, a AAAA level of the minor leagues operating within the MLB. The new rules helped level the field by making younger and faster players more impactful but the AAAA teams like the A’s, Royals, Pirates, Tigers are essentially acting like farm teams unless like the Orioles they manage to have a year like they haven’t had in a decade.. The Braves and A’s seem to have solidified this relationship.
Pumpernickel. Thanks as always Trevor for your insight. As a Braves fan I don't have any problem with the way the Dodgers are going about constructing their roster. I believe so called "superteams" is great for the league because they generate a buzz when otherwise baseball would be completely out of sight and mind for most of sports media. As you mentioned these superteams also can't dominate the sport like they've been able to do so in other sports. The overall issue in MLB is the cheap owners who are flagrantly neglecting to put any money into their product. I've been pleasantly surprised to watch the Royals making moves in a division as weak as the AL Central under the belief that anything can happen if we can get in. The Reds recognize the flexibility of having young productive players and are doing their best to supplement them with established talent on the market. It's sad to see that the Orioles haven't realized the same thing and aren't building around their young talent while their cost effective. Even if the Orioles aren't comfortable attacking the FA market it's unacceptable to not then put money towards extending their young talent like the Braves. What John Fisher has done is an embarrassment for the entire league. The way he's alienated an entire fanbase is shameful.
From the Dodgers side: it's 100% good for everyone. They raise the salary for future contracts across the league. They create a world wide product, and they are easy to root for and against. There is no joy without pain and overcoming them will bring way more joy to the fans of the other teams as well.
This is an insane take. Its not 100% good for everyone. Dodgers were already a major team, them signing shohei doesn't make any more fans watch baseball than already watched baseball Shohei was already a major star in Japan and those fans were already watching. For every other team on the west coast, they probably lose viewership ESPECIALLY when playing the dodgers. Is it good for the baseball PLAYERS sure.. probably.. maybe.. It could bring salaries up a lot, or teams could say, well we are already so far behind the lead car, why bother pumping a bunch of money into it. The whole "OMG YOU ARE GONNA BE SO PUMPED WHEN WE LOSE" Like yeah.. you'll have a 120 win season and 120 of them are going to be "yeah ofc they won look how much money they spent" and the other few losses they get will be sweet. Also, the argument that "You can't guarantee a world series" is rubbish, you can't guarantee anything in life but if the Dodgers didn't think that spending all this money would get them at least 1 ring, they wouldn't do it. Yeah, you cant get 100%, but you can get 75% or 80%.
@SkanMLL baseball is a BUSINESS FIRST. Correct you can't guarantee a World Series, but damn you can guarantee that Japanese Dodgers fans wearing all of the merchandise, watching 60 million strong like they did for the World Baseball Classic, and that revenue will be more than paid back instantly. Every great battle has a David and Goliath, and when David falls it feel more earned than a 2020 Shortened season win.
David vs Goliath argument is so bad. "Okay, so heres the deal, I'm gonna come over and punch you in the face 9x, but on the 10th time you get to punch me in the face! Everyone is happy right?!"@@refusetolose05
A lot of people in Japan want to see Sasaki play with Ohtani and Yamamoto on the Dodgers. And if he comes to the MLB early they will get him for practically free. The Dodgers $1B purchase of Ohtani and Yamamoto may have came with the whole fan base of Japan, Roku Sasaki, and players who will sign short contracts for a chance at a ring. Dodgers Potential 2025 rotation? 1. Yamamoto (Ace) 2. Sasaki (Ace) 3. Ohtani (Ace) 4. Glasnow (Arguably Ace) 5. Maybe Walker (Ace) 6. Miller (potential Ace) 7. May? (Arguably Ace) 8. New Arm (Probably Ace) With one of the better bullpens in the game to back them up. No true closer yet, but I’m sure they will sign or trade for one. Potential 2025 Lineup? 1. Mookie 2. Ohtani 3. Freeman 4. Smith 5. Muncy 6. Outman 7. Lux 8. New Bat 9. New Bat This team may be insane
More home grown players than most teams. A bunch of guys acquired with their prospect pool again because they can draft and develop better than most teams can even dream while being at the bottem of the first round or not even in first round to draft in a decade.
Pumpernickel! While it is important to say that money doesn't guarantee a WS nowadays, it is true that smart use of money can get you to the playoffs pretty consistently. The playoffs are a prerequisite to the WS, and the teams that spend the most money tend to be overrepresented in the playoffs. In that sense, it is true that the teams with genuine budget limitations are at a disadvantage to make it to the playoffs and, therefore, win a WS. Noting its existence, I'd argue that expanding the playoffs and increasing in-season inter-league play both have dramatically diminished the effect of that disadvantage. Here's why: Big spending teams have to play more games against big spending teams. All of the teams who don't spend big play are playing a similar number of games as each other against the big spenders. In other words, MLB now spreads the pain of being in a big spender division around so that teams in that division are at less of a disadvantage.
Thanks for the video Trevor May. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite creators in all TH-cam, period. Definitely would consume more of your content over pumpernickel lol
The teams should be forced to spend their revenue sharing on the field every year somehow but then the floor situation comes in. Almost needs to be a moving floor per team based on revenue sharing and TV deals.
A's still get next to nothing from TV and can't spend the revenue sharing money because one its not enough to get good players and 2 FA don't want to sign with the A's so they are left with drafting and trading. It not as simple as everyone makes it out to be just spend. How the heck are the A's going to compete with offers like the Giants Dodger, Red Sox or Cubs toss out.
PUMPERNICKLE. I'll be heading back to the Colosseum (from Spokane) one final time this upcoming season. Not to voice my anger about the relocation, but to support Stephen Vogt's inaugural season as manager of the Guardians. I BELIEVE IN STEPHEN VOGT!!!!!
Pumpernickle: Just found your channel today, subcribed, and now will be fully alerted. I live 60 miles from A's stadium and made 1 game last year, the season opener, you got the hold and Jiminez the save. You had a great year but I am wondering why Jimenez was held back from the high leverage situations so much. His whip at end of year was 1.07, he was filthy basically. Can you give me any insight on that, thanks. I have been Oakland A's fan since the 70's and if they move to Las Vegas will start my transitioning.....to a Sf Giants fan.
Hit you with a pumpernickel? Well if I do that, and assuming I do hit your AC, you would take 1D6-2 bludgeoning damage, and the pumpernickel would disintegrate (no...not the album or song by The Cure, although good choices btw) and could not be used again. ....but I could score a critical hit so why not try, right? Good points on this debate of cap vs floor. Keep up the great work.
I’d like to hear Trevor’s opinion of the pohlads. They are in the top 10 of richest owners, but spend like the rays. They never sign players, which results in fan apathy. If they actually tried, twins fans would show up consistently
Control of players has HUGE value, The longer a team has control over the salaries, the better. They both fuction as "expense limiters" for owners. BAsically the players know that both are used as salary supression, so we're not going to give them both unlless they agree to another adjustment that makes up for that lost salary elsewhere (guys being paid earlier OR a floor forcing teams to sign players). That make sense?
Big market teams can afford more expensive players cuz they make money from more fans that spend more..fans that reside in areas that cost more..it’s just natural..small market fans get more reasonable mortgages and costs of living..it’s a trade off..want more expensive players? Would u pay more for tickets like the dodger fans do?
Thanks my guy! Fun stuff. Do you like your hats tight or do you have a small head? Noticed your snap is four dots (connected not free) and I typically clip two. Doesn’t matter, have a good 2024.
Pumpernickel. We had Barry Bonds. Best position player of all time and only got to the WS once. Baseball will always humble you, having Betts, Freeman, Ohtani and Yamamoto is sexy and shiny but it’s a sport where anything can happen.
I love underdog teams that are small market but win but the athletics are taking to far but if they come back and start winning some games I’ll like them again
Pumpernickel! Great show brother! Ha! I'm a Pirates fan...do I really need to cast my vote!!!😂 I don't think we've spent a nickel on building a good team since nickles were made with Buffalo's on them! So sad that I am more likely to see the next ice age envelope my city before I would ever see a penant!!
PUMPERNICKEL Asking as a fan, what was a player's thoughts on how red Gardenhire's face could become? To us, me at least, it was absolute comedy gold. Also, how close were you with Dick Bremer? Word on the street is that he's not calling games this season.
Thanks for breaking it down. You know, while listening I thought of an odd analogy. The people complaining about how much the dodgers are spending also complain when teams don't spend enough. They seem to want every team to spend the exact same amount, equal inputs. Equal inputs achieved then they'll want equal outputs. One team is winning too much, or too little, so more needs to be done! More rules! Sounds like Communism to me and I don't say that as a joke. We can't have winners and losers, heroes and villains, failures and triumphs, dynasties - that's just too much like Capitalism. - WW
Dodgers are definitely good for baseball. It's great to have a team to cheer for, but it's also great to have a team to boo for. Also, records seem to go out the window in the playoffs. A hot team can easily beat the best team in baseball if they're slumping Case in point, the 116 win Seattle Mariners, and the 116 win Chicago Cubs. Both lost in the playoffs
I completely pumpernickel with you here. The Dodgers are MUCH pumpernickel for baseball than the A’s, particularly when including John Fisher’s pumpernickel.
dodgers generate 5 million fans a year at their stadium. the as do not. pretty easy to tell which is better for the league. empty As stadium isnt good for anything.
I think what the O’s are doing is worse than what the A’s are doing (in terms of spending). As a fan I don’t mind the ownership being cheap when they’re rebuilding as long as they plan on using that money when they’re good again. The O’s are ready to win and they’re still being extremely cheap
You should just replace the a’s with the mariners. They are doing the exact same thing. No more fan fest. Don’t care about winning only making money. I about done with the mlb owners
Well, Mr. May great hot take on the owner of the A's...gosh that guy is a massive Those Dodgers are doing amazing things for the league! Also pumpernickel!
Late to the party here: I would make a new rule where the teams have to spend at least 60%(or more) of the shared revenue money. No more pocketing these millions by the owner. Spend the damn stuff!!!!
Ok but can we collectively acknowledge that the league is better with revenue sharing that allows every team to at least spend the league average in payroll? Twins hit $156m in 2023 and are cutting payroll. That's their limit. Brewers hit around $143m in 2021. That was around their limit. Better revenue sharing = more money for teams like Milwaukee having the ability to retain their homegrown talent = less teams needing to adopt the recycling center method pioneered by the Rays because players always walk and flexibility to move pieces to recycle for prospects is how they stay afloat. It also allows consistency. I would love to buy a William Contreras jersey. But with how the Brewers have to operate to compete I don't know how long I will actually be able to wear it to Brewers games. Before anyone says it yes I'm aware teams pocket the current revenue sharing. Bob Nutting is just as much of a problem as the private networks that have the game by the balls
Oh revenue sharing IS the best framework for balance, unfortunately, the practices its meant to incentivize have an tendency to be abused. A consistent conversation about these things is important to continue the spirit of balance in my opinion. If calling stuff out makes the decision makers think just a little longer about decisions, then it's always worth it.
Exceptionally difficult to buy a dynasty in baseball wouldn’t be completely shocked to see the dodgers end up with 1 ring or less from this group. It’s just a baseball thing. Watched the Yankees play this game (albeit to a lesser extent) and just end up with 1 ring. John Fisher is a joke only good thing about that guy is that the company he inherited sells jeans in 32x36 sizes which is very hard to find.
Interesting video, although I’m not really on board with your argument that the entire baseball fandom benefits from people in Japan becoming Dodger fans. If the best players from Japan are primarily motivated to join one MLB team then every other team is at a continued disadvantage. For example, we all know that Sasaki is going to sign with the Dodgers as soon as he can. But the Dodgers fanbase is only one out of thirty - while that outcome is great for them specifically, if other fanbases start to perceive the game as frustrating and unfair then that obviously has a negative impact overall.
So is it just me, or is anyone else confused as to why everyone is touting Ohtani going to the Dodgers as a massive financial windfall for the team? He already played for a Los Angeles based team for years, paired with the best player in baseball and I don't feel like the Angels got a massive influx of money from that. I could better see the argument for Yamamoto, given that he's a new player, or the collective of both on the same team, but I'm still so confused why everyone thinks all of Japan will suddenly be enamored by the Dodgers. On top of the fact that Dodger ticket prices shot up, I don't feel like they will be "shattering attendance records" like people have been saying. Ohtani is a generational talent, one of a kind, and more than worth the price of admission- until that price is 500 bucks at Chavez ravine when I could pay less than 100 for field level for any other team. I genuinely don't understand why people keep using that line. If you said advertising revenue, sure. If you said the Dodger got some exclusive rights to stream to Japanese citizens, absolutely. But it's not like Japan is some untapped market. Or even an untapped market for the Dodgers. They had Nomo. The Yankees had Matsui. The Mariners had Ichiro. I like Ohtani a lot, but I just don't see the money aspect everyone else is talking about. I think the shiny new toy effect lasts maybe through next season at best, but with all the price hikes, regular fans just won't go to games or buy merchandise. Just my two cents
nothing about the angels was EVER los angeles based. anaheim isnt even in los angeles county. the only time the angels played in la was at dodger stadium
If you think this is bad look at soccer teams in Europe they pay ridiculous amounts of money and they have super teams. I honestly think this is not good for baseball because it’s the third most popular sport in the US . I hope the gamble pays off.
I know the dodgers want the best and only the best players but look at the whole roster and locker room you have tons and tons of players who don't even play and who would help other teams why have the biggest roster and locker room if you're not gonna use these players at all
As much as I hate the dodgers and love the A’s I absolutely agree with everything you’re saying. Also it’s safe to say I absolutely despise John Fisher.
Fans have no control what teams do, but having competent mgmt, GM, scouts, coaching, etc. and the resources put forth to have a competitive team/org is ideal. Their roster has many homegrown players, Will Smith, Bueller, Outman, etc. , so this is a lame argument.
What do you think?!

Big PUMPS to you in the New Year, Trev!
LETS GO!
Nailed it.
happy new years,Trevor
Pumpernickel. Good stuff,my new favorite content.
I 110% agree with everything that you said. Pumpernickel!!!!! Thank you for being on the side of us A’s fans!!!
@SkanMLL there's also a reason why the A's have the lowest attendance in baseball... because the product is 🗑. If you build it they will come.
Don't get me wrong this is FANTASTIC -IF- you're a dodgers fan or a dodgers owner or you get $$ directly from the sale of jerseys. @@refusetolose05

1. Yamamoto (Ace)
2. Sasaki (Ace)
3. Ohtani (Ace)
4. Glasnow (Arguably Ace)
5. Maybe Walker (Ace)
6. Miller (potential Ace)
7. May? (Arguably Ace)
8. New Arm (Probably Ace)
With one of the better bullpens in the game to back them up. No true closer yet, but I’m sure they will sign or trade for one.
Potential 2025 Lineup?
1. Mookie
2. Ohtani
3. Freeman
4. Smith
5. Muncy
6. Outman
7. Lux
8. New Bat
9. New Bat
This team may be insane
The POTENTIAL is off the charts. Fortunately for the rest of the league, that rarely matters.
More home grown players than most teams. A bunch of guys acquired with their prospect pool again because they can draft and develop better than most teams can even dream while being at the bottem of the first round or not even in first round to draft in a decade.

Great video love the inside perspective.
Excellent Take!!💯 percent!!😤💙

"Which better for citizens? Enron or Monsanto"
"I don't believe what I just saw"!
I’d like to hear Trevor’s opinion of the pohlads. They are in the top 10 of richest owners, but spend like the rays. They never sign players, which results in fan apathy. If they actually tried, twins fans would show up consistently
I’m not sure I understand why teams having player control is incompatible with a salary cap.
That does makes sense, thank you!
Pumpernickel!! Thanks for the insight.

Love this clip and could please do one on Arbitration advantages and disadvantages? say lots people love to see how all that fits.

A hot team can easily beat the best team in baseball if they're slumping
Case in point, the 116 win Seattle Mariners, and the 116 win Chicago Cubs. Both lost in the playoffs

Pumpernickel! Plus I think you're absolutely right.
YASSS.
dodgers generate 5 million fans a year at their stadium. the as do not. pretty easy to tell which is better for the league. empty As stadium isnt good for anything.
I think what the O’s are doing is worse than what the A’s are doing (in terms of spending). As a fan I don’t mind the ownership being cheap when they’re rebuilding as long as they plan on using that money when they’re good again. The O’s are ready to win and they’re still being extremely cheap
Parity. Parity is the word you were looking for lol.
We out here pumpernickling
For me, I think a real team needs to have homegrown players, or else it doesn’t feel like a clubhouse, it feels like a travel/all-star team
You should just replace the a’s with the mariners. They are doing the exact same thing. No more fan fest. Don’t care about winning only making money. I about done with the mlb owners

Well, Mr. May great hot take on the owner of the A's...gosh that guy is a massive

Isn’t the NCAA effectively minor league levels for the NBA and NFL?
Rockies ownership rivals that of the A's....Pumpernickel!
The estimate is that Otani brought in over $40 million dollars to the Angels last year. Not obvious, but very substantial.
Let's go Dodgers!!!
MLB did this to themselves by not setting a team salary cap like the NFL set 4 decades ago
They tried in 93. Hence the strike.
@@TrevorMayBaseball like I said, they have done this to themselves
