    Here's something to know from my experience working on the sawtooth mountains as a dishwasher: being a dishwasher in the sawtooths is better than being a dishwasher in the city. Nothing is ever perfect but living in such a great place is something else man. And if you are good about using your days off it is a hell of an experience. All the mountains I've climbed, creeks I've crossed, and trails I've run made whatever job worth it. Because now I am temporarily working in fast food and there are no mountains.

    grew up at the Y - tip for altitude sickness in Estes - go up to Rainbow Curve in RMNP right away and stay there for a bit - come back down to the Y and you should be fine. and yes...hydrate like crazy if you're not used to altitude. it's important.

    Thanks for the insight! I’m doing seasonal work in Idaho and I’m leaving in 3 weeks so your channel has been helpful in my journey to seasonal work! I’m torn between wanting a roommate and hoping for a solo room, on one hand a roommate can be your first and most easily found friend but also a solo room could be a dream for a whole season not to mention the roommate could turn for the worse 😅😂

      You're 100% right about the roommate situation😄. They're have been times I've been very blessed with great roommates and times I was hesitant to go back to my own room because of a roommate.

    My daughter will be coming from the Galveston area...she's nervous about the room assignment and altitude.

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the altitude it really helps to be hydrated and have a bit of food on your stomach in my experience. It affects people differently some not at all and some people get really sick. People there are really understanding so if she has to take a few days off from work to adjust it's fine, I had to do that when I got back there. With the room assignments I'll say this, I haven't known a ton of people to be unhappy with their room assignments but if she is at all she needs to communicate with HR and staff experience asap, and make sure to keep on them until she's satisfied, hope that helps.

    Hi, I am wondering what job you are doing there as I am looking into going there starting in January but I have a lot of hesitation around whether it’s worth it or if another resort type place would be better. I’m also wondering about compensation (you don’t have to answer if you’re uncomfortable) but do you feel that the pay is enough and the cost that they charge you to live there is worth it for the benefits?

    Any advice for someone from central texas who isn’t really familiar with the snow/cold?

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Pay attention to the clothes you're bringing, because we don't see real snow in Texas, a lot of the jacket, coats and socks etc. That you buy in the area won't be good enough for true winter weather. I'd recommend either buying things online or shopping when you get there. I know I literally only owned thin, no-show socks when I went to the Y, I learned really quick that wasn't going to cut it. Lol

  • @graciarosales413

    Hi! I’m new here, and thank you for your advice! I’m currently thinking about going there on June for the Work & Travel program, and I’m not sure if there’s overtime. I kinda need to work as many hours as possible to get back some of the money I put in the program 😂 So yeah, can I work overtime or more than five days a week? Or can I look for any jobs nearby? Thanks beforehand! Have a lovely day ☺️

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HI! so of course overtime would depend on whether there is a need for it. Like if your department is short-staffed or if there are a lot of guests coming in and there is extra work that needs to be done. I really wouldn't count on being able to rely on consistent overtime. There are bars, restaurants, tourist shops, and little hotels in Estes Park, so in the summertime, you'll likely be able to find a part-time job in town.

    • @graciarosales413
      @graciarosales413 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bri_nicolex thank you so much for replying! I’ll take that into account. Quick question, is it easy or hard to get to the town? Are there like any buses (and if so, how much do they cost?😂)? Does it take a lot of time? Sorry for so many questions hahaha🥺

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@graciarosales413 so there are no public buses, although the YMCA has employee shuttles that run into town a few times a week. And it probably takes like 5-8 min to get into town not far at all. 🙂

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest lately it seems some places have been quite slow responding to applicants. I've had some places get back to me within a few days of applying and others it's been two weeks or later. If it's a place I really want to go to I'll email or call to check in on the status of my application.

    So I was thinking about doing this during the summer and I was really hoping to get a single room. Can you not request one even if you have a need for it? Would you just pay more? Also, 3 people in that TINY room? I feel like that would be horrid. Your videos have been really helpful : D Could you maybe mention stuff about the pay, good/not that good etc?

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So they don't have it set up where you can pay for a single occupancy room like some places, and during the summer it's near impossible to have a single room. SOMETIMES a few elderly people will get their own rooms but there are just so many more people during that time. It's one of the reasons why I wouldn't come in the summer personally. The pay isn't the worst I've seen but it certainly isn't the best, the base rate for all seasonal workers is $12.56/hr, the problem is that unfortunately the room and board is $800/month.

    • @MrLOLgab
      @MrLOLgab 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bri_nicolex wooooow.... $800 to be stuffed into a small room, with communal bathrooms.... why is it so high jeez
      How do people who're in those living situations like it(or not), do you know:?

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrLOLgab yeah to be honest I've yet to see a room and board fee so high it's quite abnormal actually. Most of us try to get overtime even if it's in other departments and you have to have little to no monthly bills for it to work comfortably.

    • @bri_nicolex

      Hi, the YMCA doesn't currently have housing for couples. They also won't room people of the opposite sex, as far as I'm aware.

    I just applied. Do you think its better to rent off site or live on property

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Estes park is a very small tourist town, which mean properties are few and far in-between and also expensive. The Y also doesn't pay much, so I feel as though you'd have difficulties qualifying/affording rent. With the Y, although I find their room and board to be quite high, you are getting housing and three meals a day. In my opinion you'd fare better by living on property.

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No unfortunately not. I've never been in the summer but at best I think they have a downtown trolley in the summer. And sometimes there's like one guy in town that will run a taxi service from his car, you can imagine how expensive that would be.

    • @bri_nicolex
      @bri_nicolex  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, the Y can seem so big at times that you can easily end up with only friends that are within your department; which was fine with me. If you're looking really get to know people you have to try to participate in the activities, they usually have the calendar for employee activities and that often brings people of different departments together.

      I experienced that heavy in AZ, unfortunately & WY! In AZ, I was literally the only POC working in the entire resort & saw maybe one POC the entire season of me working there for 9 months! When my brother visited me for my bday weekend to surprise me, we went out to eat. Unfortunately, as soon as we walked into the restaurant, we were met with nasty stares & ppl looking at us like it was 1950! We decided to leave because I definitely wasn't staying there to eat!🤦‍♀️
