@RogerPhillips-yn8cf Great question. All of the shades have the motor and wire at the top left of the shade so if you are doing outside mount you could come 3" above the frame around where the top of the shade will be. The should allow you to then connect the wire and hide it. I haven't done this type but let me if you need measurements to help.
I had a wired Serena shade over my patio sliding door. It worked flawlessly though I sold that house. The shades are HomeKit enabled, the wood shutters are not. Over time the shades need to be wiped off with a damp rag to clean them off and keep them operating silently. I had a HomeKit automation to open the blind at sunrise and close them at sunset. The blind has quite a bit of wire. You purchase the wall plug that clicks into the wire from the shade. Your electrician could probably shorten the length. Brett has taken it to the next level using the in wall power packs. It looks truly awesome! Serena even called after a while to get my opinion, which I told them we loved the shade. My only recommendation would be to make the wire shorter coming from the shade. Then have the option to buy the AC plug with longer or shorter length depending on what you need. I wish Serena would make a electric plantation shutter.
Working on a new home now, looking to run conduit to prep for motorized shades at some time in the future. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you for taking the time to put this together :)
Brett, this is a fantastic video. Man, I'm so happy for you and your family that you are in that new house. It looks absolutely gorgeous, bud. That must have been SO satisfying the first time you opened and closed those. Oh man. Hope you are doing extremely well, my man. Adios.
Very cool and well planned. I bought Hunter Douglas silhouettes in our house because Lutron didn’t support our wider windows in the house. Cost a pretty penny but latest generation of PowerView works pretty well.
thanks for the detailed video. the only thing is that the electrician made a code violation - you can't run unshielded and exposed Romex 110V wire on the wall, it's against the electrical code. High-voltage wire has to be shielded.
Some people say that if you have legal access to a copy of the material, keeping another copy on your NAS is okay, like SCOTUS. VHS and DVD wear out, so if you backup it format shift under fair use, you would be at the mercy of streaming.
That is nuts, I was caught up on the fact that they think no one can do their own electrical work anymore. Wow, he even had the electrician do the 12v side.
They look great! We've got the battery versions in our house, they've lasted almost 4 years so far, but we'd probably do wired when we build our next home. How's the rest of the house coming along?
Correct me if I am wrong, but are these shades powered by low voltage and then controlled over wireless? Do you know of any systems that also do control over low voltage?
Yes that is correct. The wire just provides the power and then the motors run on the RF Clear Connect system and that is how they connect to the hub. Doing my research I did hear about others running a Cat cable to each window that provided POE and the ethernet connection but I am not sure what system uses that.
Great question. The Smart Hub just need to be plugged into the wireless router wherever that is located. The wires from the power panel just proved power. The shade is what sends and receive the clear connect signal that connects to the hub. In my case it is just on the other side of the room from the power panel.
If max input is 1.5A, why is your electrician wiring the DC drivers to two separate 20A circus via 12/2 wires? It seems like you could have had one 10 or 15A circuit split at a Jbox to feed the two drivers.
Actually none of it uses Wifi. "Instead, it plugs right into your router and speaks to all of your Caséta devices using Clear Connect®, Lutron’s patented wireless technology. Clear Connect works on a different frequency so it’s not dependent on the speed of your Wi-Fi network." www.casetawireless.com/us/en/caseta-advantage/smart-hub-advantage
Correct, no wifi. Not infrared either. The control is via radio frequency (RF). "Clear Connect" is just their marketing term for RF, and it's at 868 MHz, limited 868 MHz, or 865 MHz FM.
8:00 Requiring a licensed electrician is ridiculous and i hope it is not something that they enforce, just something that they recommend to limit liability
Say it is 20 windows x $500 per each window. Yes, $10k is a good chunk of money but very small to a new house build that might be $500k-$1M+. Pretty easy to justify in that context, especially considering that part of having a new custom home is the all the small luxuries you can put in to have a nice place. These things will work for decades to come.
3:45 you like that they treat you like a child? When you go to add it to your cart, a page could just add a disclaimer and even a quiz to make sure you read it, there is NO REASON that you need to call them if they have their site properly designed.
This process to take months of planning the final product is truly amazing. Thanks again to Lutron for helping with this video.
So I understand the prewires goes to the top left of the window. Does this also apply to outside mount on frame, and outside mount above frame?
@RogerPhillips-yn8cf Great question. All of the shades have the motor and wire at the top left of the shade so if you are doing outside mount you could come 3" above the frame around where the top of the shade will be. Makes sense! Thank you for the reply. Your video has been very helpful I will let you know if I have anymore questions.
Hey buddy I have another question, I know you said in the video you used a 16/2 gauge wire. But did you go with stranded or solid?
@RogerPhillips-yn8cf The CLR3 they put in was Stranded.

You're welcome! It takes a bit of prep work but it has been amazing to have them wired.

A generic CCTV 12V 5A Power Distribution panel costs about $50 and you can plug it into any standard power outlet.
Will you do a full house tour and show all the mechanical items and smart home things?
Thank you for the video! I was looking into more info on the hardwired Lutron shades & this is exactly what I needed!
That's such a nice set up. Great mix of DIY and pro.
thanks for the detailed video. the only thing is that the electrician made a code violation - you can't run unshielded and exposed Romex 110V wire on the wall, it's against the electrical code. High-voltage wire has to be shielded.
This looks amazing Brett! Congrats on the new home.
Thanks Eric! We are so happy with the final results.

Thank god he got sponsored! These cost and arm and a leg. No mention of cost…
The prices of the Lutron shades are absolutely insane. $1000 a window, $900 for a electrical panel that can only power 10 windows.
That is nuts, I was caught up on the fact that they think no one can do their own electrical work anymore.

Great video! Thank you for all the detailed information
Bro that's House of the future.
And we are just getting started!

Do you need the power wall to hard wire it?
Do you know if these shades open from top to bottom as well?
What is the true cost for something like this? 18 windows are a lot of windows
Shades are $800-$1000 per window. The wiring for the windows was done during the home build, that can cost about $200 a window to wire.
So $20,000 for his shades ?1
@@johnwhite2576 Not if it's sponsored! LOL! My math was mathing just like yours! LOL!
@@johnwhite2576 Insanity at it's finest. .... Or some people say more money than brain.
What or how do you wire the wall remote control?
I love it i want to learn that
Solid or stranded wire ?
that was Awesome. to hear.
So the wooden shades only rotate the blinds, and not move up or down?
That is correct. If you want ones that lift I would go wit the Roller Shades or the Honeycomb Shades.
Where is the smart hub located? All wires go to the power supply, is the smart hub located next to the power supply?
Great question. The Smart Hub just need to be plugged into the wireless router wherever that is located. The wires from the power panel just proved power. So all the remote controls work on WiFi, not infra-red?
Actually none of it uses Wifi. "Instead, it plugs right into your router and speaks to all of your Caséta devices using Clear Connect®, Lutron’s patented wireless technology. Clear Connect works on a different frequency so it’s not dependent on the speed of your Wi-Fi network."

Is the 16/2 wire solid or stranded?
Thats what I wanted to ask
Could have built a larger house for the price of those shades!
But then I wouldn't have any shades...
He didn't pay for them. Lol
no conduit?
Low voltage no conduit.
8:00 Requiring a licensed electrician is ridiculous and i hope it is not something that they enforce, just something that they recommend to limit liability
Yeah, just something recommended so you are aware that if you do it wrong you could fry the shades which would not be good.
seems a bit to rich for me lol
