This is such an awesome way to hug a luxury/hotel/airbnb vibe without installing electrical wire and hiring an electrician. MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.
if it is latex paint, professional strength goof off will take the dried paint right off. If it is oil based, you'll have to use acetone. Just apply with a sponge brush or cloth, let it sit for a minute and wipe off. Some residual may need to be cleaned off with warm water and vinegar. 20+ years -retired painter who gave up the brush to pick up a wrench. (i work on cars now)
Acetone - there's a reason it's called the Universal Solvent! Gently warming old latex is a great first step tip though, it can be crazy effective.
But for real, I always have a big vat of acetone around.
Thank you!!! I have the same problem.
These are great. The rechargeable battery has lasted for 5 years. Only needs a recharge every 6 months. Different brand that I bought off Amazon in a custom size. Must have for anyone with a disability. $300. For a big picture window. I would have gone with ikea but they were delayed.
YES I LOVE TECHNOLOGY!!!!! Thanks for watching, I really had no idea these rechargeable smart roller shades existed, but this is a HUGE upgrade for the income property! The full, finished house tour will be out in December! Thanks Smartwings and thanks for watching!
You need One remote control for One SmartShade ?
@@cldeez-h3v I got one 15-channel remote that can control the whole house. That's all I technically needed. I also used a 5 channel remote in each bedroom so that they can be mounted onto the wall next to the light switch in each bedroom.
Nice shades, solar panel to recharge, easy install . . . I had no idea it could be so simple ⭐️
@@cldeez-h3vno and they do sell these at IKEA
If you want to scrape on a fragile surface, use a sharpened piece of Formica. Can be made razor sharp and won't scratch most materials (paint is not a material but a coating) such as window vinyl.
In Italy our window sills are in marble or granite saves lots of work
I've had these for about a year. They are not the best quality. They are not completely even/parallel. They tend to shift to one side (even with the troubleshooting method of adding tape to one side of the roller). After a while, the fabric will rub against the edge and tear. Good thing customer service is good. They sent me new fabric, but I had to change it out myself.
Love this. We installed something similar into our guest house, however we had to program the length as to where they would stop. Love how your were perfectly set. Nice touch.
I got a set of these for the bedroom and I love these shade! You can get them with z-wave, or zigbee, or wifi only. whatever works for your smart home
I use a heat gun to get rid of paint. I like this option vs. buying more chemicals.
There’s this orange gel for paint removal at the big box stores. Super easy. Just paint on wait. Then after it is super therapeutic when peeling off the paint.
I bought and installed Lutron honeycomb shades. They use regular batteries, bigger blinds “D-cells” and smaller blinds “AAA-cells”. They last about 18 months and are easy to change. I buy them at Costco, about $50 for enough batteries for 14 blinds. Similar price to yours. Easy to install, like yours, and easy to operate. Like you, I have totally enjoyed them, and the regular automation is wonderful. Great video, thanks.
How is there no solar version? Who wants to change batteries on a window?
These powered shades are convenient and beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Mike
I've used goof off n a plastic razor blade. I'm not a pro, just a diy guy... the shades look amazing. A great pick for the look n vibe of the house
Wireless rechargeable blinds is pretty cool. I remember installing electric blinds in my dads place 15-20 years ago was cool but cost a fortune and just like these even with those plastic strips light is still getting in
As usual, can't miss. Thanks Mike.
Very cool. Definitely, going to put this on the shopping list. They also have dual shades.
wire wool & paint thinner worked for me on my window frames to remove overspray
You might also start to look for other Matter certified devices which allows use with Apple homekit, google, alexa, samsung smartthings, and Bigbee. It is a growing standard that opens up user options; even switching to another system to controlling them. Cameras are not part of it yet, they are working on a standard. Everything from air conditioners to weather devices with growing lists of manufacturer options. Those blinds are on the list of Matter devices along with a few other makers. There are also curtain movers too. Thanks for sharing.
If you’re ok with mini blinds, Switchbot has a cheaper, easier and in my opinion, better solution with its Blind Tilt. You can choose whatever blind you want, it has a solar charger, and if you’re in an apartment, there’s no modification necessary to existing blinds so you can take them with you if you move. It works with most smart home systems (with an additional hub) but can also be used as a standalone with an app where you can operate them manually or with a schedule.
I have both the hard wired and rechargeable window shades. The hard wired ones seem to have a more powerful motor and roll up and down a lot faster. So If possible I would still go with hard wired. The rechargeble ones (at the ones I have) are slower and noisier. I have to recharge them 3 to 4 times a year which is also a downside.
Fantastic explanation dude! Well done! Love these. Will install them at home! Thanks 🙏
Nice to see the channel keeps going.
Thanks
Yay, you are back! I look forward to your videos! These sound really neat to use!
Love this concept, but sadly I'm very light sensitive when I sleep. And even with those light blockers on the side, I could see enough light coming through for this to not be a better option than my regular curtains. 😅
Added Smartwings to our house. Excellent product!
Love these shades.
Thanks, just ordered the swatches.
Paint thinner for oil based, acetone for latex.
This is the way
I knew it would be simple, I just didn't want to do any damage! thanks a million!! I'll try that today :)
Thank you so much for this one. Very informative
Motsenbocker's Lift Off Latex Paint Remover Spray is AMAZING!
It works by breaking the molecular bond instead of dissolving the paint with harsh smelly chemicals.
Looks amazing
To remove paint and caulk from a plastic window frame, I used a painter's 5-in-1 tool with excellent success.
Get a can of Dirtex. They have it at Sherwin Williams and it's amazing at getting paint cleaned up without damaging anything.
Your Squarespace better be SuperPro dude. They've sponsored everything from your RV (which was awesome) to your electric blinds.
That is so cool!
Very nice. love the technology. Thanks for sharing handsome!
You should invest in European external shutters. When we close them is dark like you can’t see anything
Completely unrelated, but I really like the mics you picked for this video. I think they match your voice and inflections well. They don't sound like the same ones on the other vids. If you could link them, that'd be awesome.
Those are cool shades
Wow. I love these shades. Didn’t know wireless existed. 👍
When they emailed me I was shook!! "welcome to the future" 😂
These would be great in an RV!
Looking forward to the big reveal.
I think they should have a bottom bar for the black out too.
For those who are considering getting smart roller shades but don't wanna have to run electrical or mess around with recharging them, there are smart roller shades that come with a tiny solar panel that attaches with adhesive to the glass of the window. There are also devices that can control your blinds by turning the adjustment rod, and can also be solar powered. And if a device like these works with Alexa, HomeKit, or Google Home, you can probably get it to work with Home Assistant, so you can do some really complex or even stupidly simple home automation, but either way, it can end up looking 1-800-SUPERPRO if you do it right.
lol. u don't need a long usb cable, just a normal electrical extention box/cord!
Pretty cool shades, but not for $190+. I'd also prefer swapping batteries for this over recharging for blinds. Would be quicker, and I don't need to remember to unplug them or swap the cable from window to window.
😮😮😮❤❤❤❤❤ love your work. 👏👏👏👏
Recently had new windows installed and I used a magic eraser to remove the unwanted stain from the window frames (painters did a poor job), might be worth a shot, but does take some elbow grease.
This is a nice find. Reminds me a lot of the ikea fyrtur line which came with rechargeable batteries and a zigbee radio that let you hook up to a smart home but I think ikea discontinued them for some reason. These however seem to have a lot more customizations which is nice but they are out of their minds with the different “motor types”. I can guarantee there is technically no difference between a “matter motor” and a “zigbee motor” other than the radio and protocol yet there’s almost a $100 difference!? That’s nuts. Otherwise cool product.
First window sill@1:02--looks like yellow primer! 😊
I have these in my home which I love made by hunter Douglas. I have to use an app to adjust them
There is an orange paint stripper. Thick viscosity, works amazingly!
You didn't mention cost.

@@ehlirThank you. Yikes!
Lutron blinds are top notch....
Is there outdoor one?
Interesting
This might sound like a dumb question, but I planned on replacing my kids closet door with one of these so my question was, can they be open manually or they do they have to be recharged? If so, how would I go about recharging it when the closet it’s not near a window for the solar strip
to preface, all my knowledge about how houses are built comes from watching youtube videos, so i'm not exactly the most educated on this, BUT i know that windows are supposed to have frames around them and i believe they also have headers. knowing this, how would it be possible for there to be no wood to drill into? is it just incorrectly built, or am i misunderstanding how windows are built? anyone please feel free to chime in and correct me if i'm wrong about anything!
To preface, all my knowledge about how houses are built comes from watching TH-cam videos and owning a house, so I too am not as educated as others as well. But if I were to guess, those 2x6 headers may have some insulation sandwiched between them and may account for the absence of wood when screwing in certain areas
Maybe previously drilled holes?
People have no idea how expensive and unreliable electric shades are. Trust me. After thousands on shades and thousands more on never ending repairs never again.
Bold of you to assume the underlying paint wasn't lead-based. This is your reminder to wear a respirator when sanding paint!
Didn’t see any link to the drywall anchors he spoke of🤷
Denatured alcohol or acetone to remove latex paint.
Click Bait to talk about the paid Advertising. This Brand (Smartwing) is over priced by $100 over all other similar shades out there and they provide the same function. These are all Chinese made and I am sure its made by one company (OEM). Find out who makes it and you could sell it under your own brand name.
IDK if this is the "right way" but I just finished painting a room and used a plastic putty knife to remove the old paint on the window seal.
What brand shades n where to buy??
can operate manually?
Try acetone on the paint
Just make sure you fully clean it off.
Will do!!! Thanks for the tip :)
Paint thinners?
Links for drywall anchors and long USB cable?
Mike, I'm in OKC, working on remodeling a 1948 house. In one of your past episodes, you worked with an electrician Andy. I could not find any of his contact info. Do you have his company name or any way I could find him? Thanks!
Caulk first, then paint
Acetone will take off paint around the trim
they call a window frame a window frame for a reason, there is a frame around the window to screw into
What about a horizontal slide window with a portable ac installed vertically? 😂
Is there a breakdown with how many windows you have vs the cost?
EDIT//
12 Windows ~$3500 w/o motors but add ~$1200 for motors
I just thought that, with a little more details craft
These shields could be a Home Cinema Screen!
The same button could deploy the projector too
Just an idea for a future video
Broken than less than 1 year ago when we got one !
WD40 and a sharp corner of a new paint stick should remove the paint. Replace paint stick to keep sharp edge, press hard, it should work.
Well there should be a header over every window so I mean, be pretty poopie if you didn’t hit wood!
I'd just paint over the grey color with the white.
GooGone FTW
really!?!!? I'll give it a shot!
Mike always puts such a hard “L” when he says “caulk”. 😂
Why are the Windows in your country so cheap designed???
Please do some trime on the windows, looks horrible without.
I got some big windows where I live... $500 per window shade from that website... no thanks!
Ikea has had this for awhile now.
Why smarting over Caseta?
How loud are the blinds? Any way we could get a short that's just the sound of them operating?
They're not "silent" but they are very quiet. I'll upload one today or tomorrow, that's a great idea!!
In the end, which one is silent or not!🤔@@ModernBuilds
Comment from France : thank you (for the people who don’t speak English) for AI translation but the French lady voice is the same as the slam ads. You must try the AI software who translate but with you voice. (Like the Mr beast channels for exemple)
👏👏👏👏
Queen you didn’t link the drywall anchors 😭😩
Was worried that you might be 😵
I love the series but this has to be longest flip ever.
I know!!! All the wrap up content Is being released this month!! Can't wait to share :)
@@ModernBuildssend the end. When will the house be finished?
I am in a hurry.
Maybe I bought it from you, my dear😊
Blindr by Eric Wang
Was that a video about him and how wonderful he thinks his work is ? Or was it supposed to be a 2 minute video about window blinds ? I'm surprised he didn't start at the foundation of the house then work up to the blinds ?
Millennial grey 😢
YUp may have options to be hard wired or solar or battery
i bought the smart tent from ikea. after two months it stop working, i tried many times to reconnect the three pieces but nothing, and i had lost the receipit. sooo much money wasted
Oh I am disappointed, from the title I was hoping Smart meant they would open when the sun came up and closed after the sun set.
It is possible, with a little programmation , if you connect to a smart box like alexa, google home... 14:00
This product using solar would be the shizzle
how about just paint over the frame? seems easiest to me.
