A straight shooter with upper management written all over him (Office Space HD)

- In the movie "Office Space" the whole management uses indirect talk.
In this scene, exaggerated use of "indirect talk" makes Lumberg come across as too submissive, almost slimy.
Too much indirectness can make you come across as slimy. Especially among people who speak very directly.
The problem here is not just the verbal production of course, but the whole nonverbals.
On the other hand, too direct talk, especially when giving tasks, can break rapport. In Social Power I recommend what I call "directly-indirect", which is a sweet spot between the two.
It's the perfect combination for what I refer to as "high power / high warmth".

I like how one Bob stops the other and says "Ill handle this" like he knew he was about to lay into him!
But it looks like he was. 0:37
@@sesanti “There it is”
He probably heard what happened to Franklyn's lab and wanted to get in front of it.
The chair lean in with a serious face..lol
:32
The fact that Bob got so confrontational and defensive over Peter. XD
Bob had to calm him down 😂😂😂
I love how the bobs are of one mind. They never disagree
Lol, they have a goal. Fire as many people as possible while leaving just enough to keep the company running.
Hilarious sensitive response to Lumberg's disagreement haha - seen it happen
This comment is why I'm here. Thank you.
Whenever dual auditors come around, they shall forever be referred to as "The Bobs".
"I'll handle this". Just so fucking good.
great camera/directing moment, how when the Bobs pull out Lumbergh's file, the camera swoops around behind them so you immediately know Lumbergh is the one in the hot seat now
Except the guy sitting next to Lumburgh disappears before the last shot in the scene
Oh hi bob . Bob
And wearing the same shirt & tie with matching suspenders
I thought the same when I just rewatched it!
Good eye friend
I love upset left Bob is getting.
Nobody portrays "pent-up fury" like McGinley.
Nearly gonna blow but they keep each other in equilibrium during these moments
0:23 Suspenders-Bob was about to go to war for his boy Peter.
Love how the Bobs get so sensitive with Lumberg's counter-response
Boy was about to get him as soon as he said TPS reports lmao. His man had to tell him to fall back and calm down.
"I'll handle this" 😂😂😂
That man was hyped lmao. Just noticed that 😂
Yeah, he was about to come across that table in a flash. 😆
Lmao😂😂😂😂
Peter must've really laid it out what the TPS reports were all about. Lol
I love how they never tell you what TPS reports are. They could be the most minor thing ever
They are a minor thing. And the issue is just the new cover page format - Not the contents of the report itself. Pure genius. An encapsulation of the nastiness of corporate America.
everyone that has just had a GLIMMER of IT before AGILE, knows what TPS is.. Test Procedure specification, that and BRD (Business requirement documentation) such a F..... waste of time.
Omg the whole TPS reports thing... reminds me of my last job. I got berated over the tiniest things, like not responding to random emails unrelated to my job description for a couple days. I swear, these middle managers got obsessed with inane things because they don't actually know how to manage engineers.
I've always felt it stood for THE PETTY SHIT. Or see also, THE PIDDLY SHIT. Either way, it's SHIT.
TPS= totally purposeless shit
Amazing moment. But when you grow up you realize corporate justice is a fantasy - belongs in movies only!
Like oil and water
It does exist, but its largely inconsistent.
@@beaz3784 nearly random
No, depends on the company. I 100% have seen it happen. Now I am even in management, and God help my bosses.
@@SerRrazmik LOL! well, there is some randomness for sure.
0:49 "There it is" tickles the crap out of me.
To the point he’ll start interrogating Lumbergh lol
0:37 so much emotion in his face
(always love watching this scene)
Also, just occurred to me, that Peter had a previous scene where he told them EVERYTHING.
Not just how he didn't work, but about the ridiculousness of TPS reports, how his bosses narrow in on that for him, etc. So you can SEE how when Bill brings up the TPS reports, how Bob goes red and was about to lay into him xD
1:04 Boy just "froze" under pressure.
Bob #1 almost went full Dr. Cox on Lumbergh.
Brilliant actor. Although because I love him so much, I did NOT enjoy seeing him play the psychotically vicious serial killer (is there any other kind? lol) in the movie adaptation of Dean Koontz's book INTENSITY.
Lumberg was about to get rocked
The bob was seriously upset😂😂
When my boss is gone is when I can actually get stuff done. Anyone else?
Working in an office in Canada, I constantly pull quotes from this movie, NOBODY gets the references. Bunch of uncultured zoomers
WHAT???? Omg you must leave that country right now. Come down here because I could have whole conversations with just dialogue from this movie w/several of my colleagues. In fact, if you don't get the references, I basically cannot be your friend....HAHHAAHHAAA
Gary Cole is now in NCIS and he's doing a great job but sometimes I just picture him doing the "ummm yeahh" to the team at random moments.
A few Lumberg easter eggs would be hilarious
@@JimmyJaxJellyStax there's at least one I remember - his character references a TPS report.
Don't forget how brilliant he was as Mike Brady too. The guy can play anything pretty much. I was a fan back in 80s? 90s? Idk but he was a smooth-voiced late night radio dj's (remember when that was still a thing?) and people would call in and confess stuff to him. I forget if he solved crimes or what, but it was a pretty good show and I liked him in it. But Lumberg is forever his magnum opus...
@@sakitoby1581i remember that show too midnight caller is what it was called so different from lumberg 🤣
Oh hell Ricky, I was high when I said that.
HOLY CRAP! At 0:58 you can see that Lumbergh has a beachlors in physics from MIT!
@zack Milder It's the school, MIT is a very hard school to get into.
What I took it as was that lumberg was once a driven smart passionate man with dreams who got a degree in one of the most difficult subjects at one of the most difficult schools to get into but he landed in a job that has nothing to do with his field of expertise and the cooperate life sucked all the passion and energy out of him giving him the personality of a potato.
@@conorwellman8592 Yeah this is what I got out of it as well
@zack Milder very interesting theory.
I just am so glad that Milton finally snapped, took the money and finally took the break he deserved.
Fun poke at how someone works in something completely different from their degree - even from MIT
If you were ever a dedicated worker and you’ve been through this bullshit. This movie really helps enlighten you.
And/or depress the crap outta you. LOL
This movie was way too accurate. If you know, you know.
I love that Dr. Cox had to be physically restrained when Bill mentions the TPS reports lol
Lumbergh's brother is his emergency contact, whose street address is *1287 **_Slippery Rock_*
😆
Mustache Bob's suspenders just kill me every time.
When it comes to downsizing it's the managers that get laid off first
These interview guys are the best. Great scene.
I love how angry Bob gets when his boy Peter gets crap haha. This scene, and the whole movie, are just fantastic.
Confession: I was an expert at throwing bosses under the bus and getting them fired when I worked in corporate America. It really is just a virtue of understanding how hierarchy works and playing your position like an ace. It really is about taking those chances to throw them up under the bus of upper management (especially when the numbers are down). I can say that I've seen many a bad manager fired on my watch...LOL
You're awesome
Good for you. I swear like 95% of people that get into management position are useless lol
I never noticed how shook Left Bob was until recently
I hate how Bill just calmly forces everyone to do what he says. Dude no one HAS to listen to you. You’re lucky no one has punched you in the face lol
First wave Gen X tech , the "launch" of it all. Scrillicon Valley.
There it is...
0:30 is this shown in reverse? John C. McGinleys blinking looks weird.
Youre right
Oh yeah it looks like twin peaks
Great observation
In Lumbergh's personnel file, you can see in his employee photo he is wearing the same outfit as he is the day of the meeting with the Bobs. They may have taken a Polaroid picture right before filming this scene and stapled it on there.
Great scene, my favorite when the snake gets his. That actor was the F.B.I. agent breaking Clint Eastwood's chops "In the Line of Fire."
It seems like the Bobs favor honesty over anything else and tend to hold leadership accountable. And there are people like that in upper management. The hard part is getting enough people to support you as you take a case to them, without the person you're reporting deciding to block you or screw you over.
Everyone needs the Bobs in their company
So I played the Ennio Morricone's " The good, the bad & The Ugly" soundtrack rather loudly on the office speakers. I was asked why and made fingerguns and told them "I am a straight shooter with upper management written all over me" . I got blank stares.
First seen in new joker movie
The guy next to him disappeared
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta.
DANG IT YOU BEAT ME TO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make sure you remember lock that car door, now. LOL
The guy with the balding dude gets so fucking pissed when his subordinate disagrees.
This is such an accurate depiction of corporate management and upper/middle management interacting. Micro management is an epic waste of money and creates plenty of professional useless people.
Dom Portwood seems to all of a sudden disappear at the end
There it is.
Bro nice profile picture and username. You clearly have great tastes in movies AND TV shows.
Lived this before, living this now, will live this again in the future. This is what happens when people are promoted for hanging around, not expertise, ability or achievement.
Uno Reverse Card
Seen this movie so many times. Looks like Lumbergh went to MIT according to his personnel file.
Never noticed the tongue at 0:09 sec!
2022 still see new things here.....
What are you implying 🤷♂️
There it is
I just gave my notice at work
That ending was excellent hahaha
I saw Bill's Lundbergh's name in that stack of papers.... I wonder if they were going to can him next?
Peter was able to create his absolute disdain for the TPS reports in the Bobs as well. Look how angry they got at its mention 😂
Number one scene
Haha even before he was mayor Jones in mystery incorporated gary Cole was already cosplaying as him in the 90s!!😅😅
How can this shite still make me laugh til I cry after 2 decades??? Omg I've seen this prob over a hundred times, I can never get tired of it. I swear, Gary Cole is so great in so many roles but THIS, this one will go on his headstone. LONG LIVE LUMBERG......nnnnnnkay?? That'd be greeeeaaaat.
Yeah....
Hey...wait a minute. At about 57 seconds in, in says BS and M/S or MIS on Peter's file. Did Peter have a master's degree?
MIT Bachelor of science
0:23 When a Sony fanboy tells you the 800$ price tag for the PS5 Pro is worth it.
I design TPS reports.
Bill should have been one of the people fired....if they really wanted to downsize, they should start with the current management...how did he still run the division at the end of the movie???? I know it's just a movie, and they can do whatever they want, but I'm just saying in the real world.....
What happened to the other manager sitting on Lumberg’s left. He’s in the shot then the camera moves around the table and we don’t see him anywhere. He’s not the focus of the scene but where did he go?
Did this inspire the office
I've always thought that, but I have no idea.
Look at the one thing on lumbergh;s bio it says harry bro lumbergh lol
BRO for brown (hair)
Yeeeeeeeeeeeah...
