Awesome! It just depends really. Are they going to be in the coop full time or will they be free ranging and only using the coop to sleep? Do you have standard, large, or bantam size chickens? Some people swear you need 3 sqft per bird. Others say 1 sqft per bird. I think you can get 15-20+ standard birds in a 4x8 comfortably as long as they won't be in the coop 24/7. I started with 13 birds in this build and they had more than enough room, even with just 1 roosting bar. Got rid of 2 roosters and lost 5 at once recently to a boil of hawks. Ive got 18 chicks in a brooder right now and will have a total of 21 chickens in this coop, but mine free range and about 4-5 are bantams (mini chickens). I'll be doing an update on this build soon. That's what I always thought too, but after doing research, Round roosts are known to cause damage to your chickens’ keel bones, foot pads, and overall health for several reasons. Read this for more info hutchandcage.com/should-chicken-roosts-be-round-or-square/

Just watched a video on This Old House and your coop skunks theirs! Their small coup has zero ventilation, no perch or roost and no hardware cloth ( isn't predator proof)They also made too many nest boxes for 6 hens and put them all inside so the chickens have nowhere to go inside the coop but inside a nesting box.
Thanks. Yeah, I've seen the video and it reminded me of a dog house I built as a kid. And so was this coop based off those ideas. I will probably go back and add more ventilation on the wall with the perch. Instead of the vents, this will be about the length of the wall and only 8-10" in height. Then cover it with hardware cloth. This design also gives you A LOT of extra space to; add more nesting boxes, perches, even another level ( 2nd story ), or to create storage space in it up top. My only regrets is not adding overhang to the roof. I may do that, or add a gutter system one day. After I finished the coop, I added a 4×8 run as well, plus the 4×8 space under the coop, it turns into an 8x8. Again, my chickens free range, but this is good if I have to leave them for long periods. And of course, I added the predator cloth so nothing can dig under 😆 Thanks for watching and commenting!

The way I did this required 2 full sheets on the roof. I wanted to maximize space, water shed, and keep the build simple, so I used full sheets. My plan was to use the open space in the roof (inside the coop) as storage, but I still haven't gotten around to that 😆 Since this was a 4x8 build and sheets come in 4x8, I flipped what would become the gable wall up vertically and measured up 48" (center point)to be flush with the walls. Drew a line all the way across the width (48") to act as a marker, then cut off each side from the top center out at 48" for a full sheet at a degree angle. This allows you to lay full sheets of the 4x8 plywood as the roof straight onto the wall/gable then miter the butt of the roof for the ridge beam and the other end for the joint at the wall. However, you can cut that angle to be whatever pitch you want. I measured my angle to allow a full 4x8 sheet to lay on each side of the roof. Hope this helps. @@MrBryanBarry Yep and 5/8. In hindsight, if I was to do this build over again. I would either spend extra money for a couple extra pieces of plywood for roof overhang. Or if money is tight, just bring length and width of walls in a bit to allow for roof overhang. I'm not having any problems, but that's one thing I would have done differently just for extra security and peace of mind.
I used plywood. OSB would be cheaper, but you usually won't get a good finish on it because if the surface texture. They both have their pros and cons.T1-11 would look the best in my opinion, but it will cost you more

Nah, the dividers and lip keep them in place. Problem is all of them want to use 1 box. Typical chickens. They recently raked out the boxes and are only laying in coop floor now
@@JimmyCandFriends you're right, I just went back and watched and it's not included in the video. Yeah, it gets old pretty quick climbing in there. They are giving me more eggs than I know what to do with right now too

Quick question, is that flip down panel on the opposite wall of the main door there for the purpose of accessing the boxes and removing the eggs? I assumed it was but then you mentioned how it gets old pretty quick having to climb in there to collect the eggs.

I had initially planned on incorporating the roof into my run, but since my chickens would free range, I ended up going a different direction with my run and my original plans never happened. I can and may still do an add on, much like one would do when adding a deck to their house. But as of now, everything is ok, partly because the coop is under tree canopy. But yes, I recommend people who want follow this type of design to build the roof with overhang 👍
Yep. Ended up with 2 Polish roosters. I couldn't tell a difference then, but now I'm like how did I overlook them lol. Wife didn't like the thought of eating fertile eggs so I got rid of them
I sure hope you bent those roofing tacks down inside the coop. Your chickens will be finding a way to stap and stick or otherwise harm themselves quickly.

Chickens definitely prefer a square roosting bar, their “toes” aren’t meant to curl around a roosting bar like most other types of birds.
2x4 mounted flat is best, especially for larger breeds.
