Would you mind doing a video on network taps and how to setup this little switch as a tap?

Great versatile switch at this price for sure. I'm interesting to see lag configuration on this one, i don't have the right nas to test that on mine but for 29$ i'm curious/skeptical.

I am curious if you have any thoughts about when we will see low cost 2.5G or 10G switches available. Is the Bill of Materials really that much higher for those devices or is there a significant profit/premium for higher speed devices.
For what it is worth, I use two of the Flex Minis in my house. One on my work bench in my office for testing random bit of equiment and one in the grarage so I can have a camera, AP and a couple of hardwire drops in the workshop. When I ran the ethernet, I didn't imagine that I would want that many connections in the garage :)

This switch is begging to get a long detailed video that goes into the details of its features. LAG and VLAN portions should be interesting to explore. Is this an L3 switch? It's hard to find a detailed tutorial on an inexpensive L3 switch, particularly these switches' inter-VLAN routing, on TH-cam.

Can this work without cloud adoption? Just simply plug in to power and use as switch?

Where people get confused about the vlans on it is it can set a port to a vlan but you can't do a vlan profile that sets the port to 1 vlan with a tag vlan, only 1 vlan per port. Note the All Vlans option isn't affected by the rule.

I have a bunch of these and they work fairly well. I do have an issue where they sometimes go offline in the controller when pushing high bandwidth through them (not saturating the port, but like 600+ mbps. Also had one brick itself, but it can be recovered with instructions found on the unifi website. A bit cumbersome, but it did come back to life.

It's nice for the price, but no SSH access is a big drawback when you are troubleshooting. I had massive controller adoption issues when they were first released but now the firmware seems good enough.
They are great for small deployments if you have easy physical access.

Yep. I'm pretty much all Mikrotik these days for 10Gb and under and Mellanox above that to 100Gb. You manage them like enterprise routers as switches vs consumer or pro-consumer models. Harder to setup if your not used to them but once it "clicks" becomes a very powerful tool. One Interface (PC, SSH/Telnet, Web) to manage your "campus" up to and including Layer 3 features. More or less dedicated procs for routing/switching but not general purpose. Great for anything from VPN (anything type including wireguard) but not made to process large filtering lists so not ideal for (IDS/IPS) which should be it's own device and usually a PC/Server.
The problem I see is lack of value for 5 port switches for LAG or combined NICs. If your uplink is only 1Gb it's only use is having 2 machines with 2 NICs each bonded only talking to each other. :)
I've got 5 port Microtik switches with 5 2.5Gb ports and 1 10Gb uplink which is pretty useful. I use 2 USB 2.5Gb NICs on my notebook plus the built in 1Gb which after overhead gives me roughly a 5Gb NIC performance from a notebook. The 5Gb USB adapters just don't work well and lock up. Got 3 different vendor models and they all do it. 2.5Gb are rock solid so you do what you gotta do. :)

5 packs no power supply.... worst of the bunch unless you use POE exclusively. But you can not do custom VLAN group?! meaning either any one of the VLAN or all, but not groups you specified. But great value indeed, better than those pseudo VLAN capable cheap switches.

  • @rolling_marbles
    @rolling_marbles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

My experience is it doesn’t do LAGG, and the VLAN config is a little weird. I say that because you either can have a single VLAN in access mode or all VLANs in a trunk configuration, you can’t say “I only want this set or that set of VLANs”. For the price that is perfectly fine IMHO.
The adoption is a little weird because it won’t use DNS for L3 adoption, only DHCP options, nor will it use mDNS either.
Personally this is the perfect little switch and iPerf tests show all ports run at line speed, so for the price this is an awesome little switch IMHO.

I know this is a edge case but I had a hell of a time getting this to adopt to a controller in a docker container behind my treafik reverse proxy. My ap nano ,usg and us-8-60 adopted fine but this thing would not adopt. I had to install the controller on my PC and push the DNS domain name to the flexmini then it adopted fine after that behind the proxy.

I do enjoy this switch, I run a dream machine into this, and then a POE injector out of this to run some AP's, my only complaint is it reboots itself about once a month and my controller doesn't know why. but other than that, rock solid

Purchased one a few weeks ago. I have nothing bad to say about it and easy to use (as all things Unifi). Plug, Adopt, Play.
I replaced the trial unit of Cisco Meraki siwtch with this and it's perfect.

Agreed. It's a great little switch, especially for a home lab. I found a strange bug when I had my Raspberry Pi Unifi controller behind this switch. The switch would randomly disappear from unfi controller. I moved the Pi away from this switch and it works without issue now.

I haven't tried these yet. But I will definitely be ordering some tomorrow. These have a lot of neat use cases. I could see them being used even in streaming environments where people are doing NDI handoff and Wi-Fi just can't keep up. You can velcro them anywhere power them easily. These would go great for remote video production.

      @@WillieHowe Hi. Thanks for replying.
As detailed on innumerable Unifi support community posts, unfortunately.
I have a s/h USG 4 running through a cable modem (in bridge mode). I’ve tried adopting locally to a scratch controller then moving the site to the cloud. The DNS is set up properly, the set-inform URL is valid. Option 43 is enabled (but I’m not at all certain this adds anything)
The devices are factory reset and the devices are discovered but adoption just loops endlessly. The AP’s and switches all adopted fine.
My alternatives were a CK Gen2 or waiting for a UDR. I managed to buy a pair of Switch 8’s for £100 and they’re working fine.
I have three mini’s in my home and lab and they worked out of the box with my UDM.

The ports on these switches can only be configured as 1 untagged VLAN(network) or TRUNK(All), no other port profiles possible. Great switch for the price but that may be a dealbreaker for some people.
