    Hi! I find your video and the information you gave extremely helpful. Thank you!
    I am planning the same hike in June this year and I have a question to you to tap a little bit from your experience :) Is it difficult to find the trail in the dark? I am asking because when I look at the videos and photos taken during the day, it seems that might be difficult to find it even in full sun. I will have external GPS and good headlights, but a first-hand experience would help a lot to prepare mentally :)Thanks!

      Hi! No it isn't difficult to find the trail at night. I did it in complete darkness with no moon out. So without headlamp it was super dark. But the human eye is capable to adjust and even "see" in that darkness after a while. It takes some time though (>10min) and it is important to not look into bright light, that's why I mostly used my headlamp with red light. For the video that was not bright enough though, so I had to use the white light for filming. But most of the time my headlamp was switched off and I enjoyed walking in the dark and looking at the stars. You will see that is way more enjoyable if you switch off the headlamp. In the beginning the trail is a jeep road, so you can't get lost there. Then the road ends and a steep path climbs up to Refugio Altavista. That part I found a bit confusing in the dark, because the path crossed some rocky parts where you can't see the "obvious" path. So there I used my white light with full brightness to get orientation. Once I found the path, I switched off the light again. After the Refugio the path is super easy to find, as it is marked left/right by rocks, you can't get lost there. ENJOY THE HIKE! 😀

      @@mgrallert Many thanks for all the details! Highly appreciated and useful! So now, the only unknown is whether there will be free parking spots at the parking lot at the beginning of Sendero de Montana Blanca in the middle of the night :)

      @@SajkiSajk the carpark at the beginning of Sendero de Montana Blanca is small and was full with campervans when I looked for parking. so I ended up parking at "Mirador El Tabonal Negro" and walked from there (plenty of parking there). the first 200m i had to walk on the road, so when a car approached i stepped across the road barrier and waited until the car had passed. after 200m there is a path parallel to the road. you can check that out in daylight, it is not difficult to find if you know where it is. parking at the "Mirador" added maybe 15min to the hiking time...

      @@matzidotcom Damn those campervans! But it is very good that you mentioned "Mirador El Tabonal Negro"! This shall be my backup option, and not the "Minas de San Jose" like I previously planned. Thanks a lot!

    Hello, nice video ! We plan to do the same walk in few days. We are 25-30 years old with pretty good physical condition but we are not really used to walk a lot. We are used to go skying in the alps so the altitude is not really a problem. My question is, starting at 0.30 ppm is really necessary or did you really took your time ? We were thinking to start at 1.30 or 2.00 pm but I am a little bit scared about being late to the top. Thank you.

      hi! sorry for late answer, i was on another vacation :-D
      about the time: well i think i was one of the first/earliest. but i really wanted to take my time for photos and videos. after 2 hours or so there were people overtaking me already, who started the hike later. so they were faster than me. however, i consider myself "in good shape" too and i really couldn't go much faster. i walk slow in order to never be out of breath in the high altitude. i watched many people overtaking me fast but they were breathing very "heavy" and it didn't look like fun to me. just skiing in the alps will not acclimatise you for hiking above 3000m, unless you have spent 1 week above 3000m just before you came to tenerife...
      so, its hard to say... sunrise is at 7:50am at the moment. the sign at the bottom says "5:30hours" (without breaks, in daytime!). so latest start would be 2am for you. but i think with 1am you are on the safer side... that gives you 6:30hours with breaks.
      ps: make sure to check the weather forecast www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Pico-de-Teide/forecasts/3718

    Hey Matthias, I am curious - because you did the hike before 0900, I'm assuming you did not get a permit?

    • @mgrallert
      @mgrallert  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stephanie! No I didn't get a permit. The gate to the summit was open and noone checked permits at that time. That was one of the reasons why I went up at night 😁

      @@mgrallert on the spain national park website it's written that you need the permit even if you go for sunrise or sunset, but I don't think they do many checks..

      @@matteoturrina4317 interesting, thanks for the update! it seems they changed it last year and now you need a permit for sunrise and sunset too. that sucks... but maybe it was getting toooo busy and they have to find a way to regulate it.
      "The passage through the trail will be authorized between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. (must be off the trail at the end of this period) to a maximum of 50 places , while the Altavista Refuge remains closed . With the Refuge open, this number of places will be reduced to seven (7)"

    Thanks for the video Matthias, I loved watching it! When did you climb it? I was wondering if you could tell me how you felt the weather at night then. I am considering climbing it in July-August. Thanks!

    • @mgrallert
      @mgrallert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi! I climbed it on 20th of August (2020). When I started I had long hiking pants, a thermal longsleeve (you know, sth like skiunderwear) and a softshell/windjacket. That felt actually quiet warm when I hiked, because I had a big backpack with camera gear and I started sweating. So the longsleeve came off very quick and a tshirt was fine. However, the windjacket was really necessary, as there was some cold wind blowing up the mountain in the beginning from the North side. When I stopped for a break, I needed a downjacket and a beanie, because it was a bit "chilly". Also I put the thermal longsleeve back on when I arrived at the Altavista hut, because it was getting a bit colder the higher I got up. It wasn't below zero, but below 10 I would say, maybe even 5. So thats definetly jacket weather. So I would suggest you bring a windjacket, beanie and a warm jacket, maybe even an additional fleece, if it fits in the backpack. Better carry unnecessary things, than feeling cold! The best way is to "layer" the clothes. So not one big thick jacket, but multiple light things that you can combine and take on/off during the hike. I guess you will not bring a big camera and a heavy tripod like I did, so some light hiking clothes shouldn't make the backpack too heavy ;-) Then after the sunrise things change super quick, the sun is strong and it warmed up super quick. Especially the loooong way down, I needed a lot of water. So that is probably the biggest/heaviest thing to carry: water! The Altavista hut was closed, so I couldn't get water there. You can buy softdrinks and small waterbottles from a vending machine at the top cable car station though. Of course you can book a cable car ticket for just "down", so you don't have to do the long hot downhill part. But it was "Corona" time, and I didn't want to be with people in that cablecar. And it was super interesting to see the path in daylight, because it is rally pitchblack at night and you can't see a single thing (bring a GOOD healamp!). Wow, long response. I hope that helps! Enjoy the hike! The summit sunrise is breathtaking! Make sure you look at the opposite side and check out the shadow of the mountain! :-)
