    It's close, but it's not the same as the promist filter. I own Tiffen's 1/4 Black Promist and I work as a colorist, and the main difference between having the filter on and simulating it in post is that it doesn't work properly if any of the channels is clipped. Also, bare in mind that it will NEVER be an exact match to the look, and most importantly - it doesn't work with any light source that is not captured within the frame.
    Indeed, you can really come very close to simulating it in post but as usual - it's never exactly the same like having the filter on...
    Regardless, good stuff! :)
    Cheers

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Agreed. But if you can't afford it or want to try the effect out this is the best next option. And most people wont really be able to tell the difference either..

    This is a great way to have control over the look in post. I just discovered I can apply it to an adjustment clip as well to affect shots that are similar.

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s awesome. I would still do it on each individual clip because I’d want precise control as every shot would be different (unless it was an interview or something)

  • @JimRobinson-colors

    Another nice topic Jamie. It seems like I comment on stuff in the facebook groups that get discussed then I see your video on the topic shortly after. Probably a coincedence, but shows that you are on top of the current topics - which is absolutely great. I think that the glow as it effects skin is probably the reason most people are interested in it though. You touched base with that on your first demo there. I often throw a layer mixer in and add softleight composite to be even more subtle, to take the edge off. Another good video - great stuff.

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really appreciate the time you take to leave awesome feedback/comments! Question for you - Do you key the skin and add the first technique that I show in this video?

    • @JimRobinson-colors
      @JimRobinson-colors 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JamieFenn Actually I don't - you are talking about the blur/midtone detail I believe? If I did key that ( which I find myself doing less and less these days ) I would use the Beauty OFX - any blooming I would do would be later into the secondaries, Probably would use a soft power window and not key the skin to keep it looking natural.
      Keying the skin can be great for some things - but in reality in production it requires a lot of time being that it is something that shouldn't be done in the color corrections stage because each clip would need to be keyed and carefully checked as to not fall apart over all the frames ( which seems to happen way more than I like it to. ) So any skin treatment I would just do with a tracked power window. I see so many tutorials on youTube that do it, just to get skin tone where the actual problem with the skin is the lighting or wb / capture in the first place. So if you attack the balancing in the first few nodes, you need it less and less further up the chain. I always think of all color corrections and primary is setting the look that I wished the camera had caught in the first place. Exposure/White Balance and color balancing- if the camera footage was perfect and exactly how you wanted it - then all we would be doing is helping to accentuate where the viewer should look and the emotional, historical or geographical look on top of it.

    I was about to buy a knock-off mist filter from AliExpress at $50 but this is even better! One key point is that I would use this effect at night or sunset and adding a filter would just increase ISO or degrade AF. So adding this in post is technically better, not mentioning that you can decide on a large screen the amount of effect you need.

      I guess its all up to you as far as how you use this effect. Like I said with the first technique, I would use that in a subtle way as I wouldn't want the whole image to look fuzzy/blurry. People like to use this effect to soften the footage up and get a more organic look (like I mentioned in the video) If you want more details and applications about mist filters google is your friend :)

    Really cool man! I'm currently experimenting with UV-filters and hairspray (the DIY version of the mist filters if you don't want to pay 100+ Dollars for it), which gives you ok results, but doing it all in Davinci seems even better as the effect is not "baked into the footage", as you're saying. Good stuff as always Jamie!

      @JamieFenn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Stefan I really appreciate it! Yea I really wanted to show people how to do this. Personally I think this is better than the actual filter because of the flexibility of the look in post. Cheers!

    Hello, it's a pleasure to greet you and I wanted to tell you that I have that filter that you recommend, but what I want to ask you is if I can still do the effect that you recommend in your video or I don't need it, I say this because I would like to give it that touch vintage, with fog to the videos but I don't know how to do it, on top of that now I'm with Da

    This is awesome man! Question about the last technique, does this also add any kind of digital softening or would you add some negative MD detail or Beauty OFX on top of the Glow OFX to bring the sharpening down?

  • @JimRobinson-colors
    @JimRobinson-colors 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have seen some DIY promist filters that a guy just took a clear lens filter and sprayed some black matte spray paint into the air and quickly swung the filter into the spray mist. Let it dry and then put on the camera - side by side with the Promist and it was pretty much idenitcal. Apparently the guy bought the U/V filter for 6 dollars at a thrift store.

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha thats awesome!! I love DIY projects like that. So creative! But a lot more work than a node and some adjustments haha

  • @AnxyTp
    @AnxyTp ปีที่แล้ว

    I take it you can also mix these together in some way. Since this can be used for some good CC, possibly with action in it too. Like a glowy affect, could you possibly change colour of the glow/highlights?

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s a lot you can do. But I would say less is more. Yes you can change the glow color!

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      99% of people wouldn't be able to tell you the difference. I like this way because it gives you the option to use it on the footage and adjust it without it being "baked" into the footage.

    Hello Jamie, do you think it is better to have the clip "clean" and reproduce the effect in post or to use a filter like Teffen ProMist in shooting is more effective? In other words, does your technique serve to remedy the missing filter on some scenes, or can it permanently replace the filter on the lens? Thank you

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I personally believe its better to replicate the effect in post. Rather than having the effect permanently baked into the footage.

    • @MusicForIMAGES
      @MusicForIMAGES 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JamieFenn I deduce from your answer that there is no difference between the effect with the filter and the effect that is achieved in post. Thanks as always for your time and attention. Best regards

    Wich one are the advantages of having this filter with VND Mist Edition instead of VND Signature Edition + Black pro mist. Isn't better to have both separatly and use it when you want? Thanks

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you can afford it sure go for it. But you also have that mist look “baked” into the footage. With this technique at least you have the flexibility to either have the look or not and also control how strong it is. It’s up to you!
