    Quick addition - Change the LUT interpolation (colour management project settings) to 'Tetrahedral' for better results - still reveals the same issue in this video, just a bit smoother.

  • @allenpayne9182
    @allenpayne9182 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    Thank you! FYI, the "jagged lines" might be due to the "trilinear" interpolation of the LUT. If you set it to tetrahedral interpolation, the "jagged lines" should disappear.

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It doesn't happen on other LUTS as shown in the video. That LUT is clearly not good. Yes, Tetrahedral is best setting, I wasn't set to it for this video - I just tried it and it smoothed it a bit but not enough I would trust that LUT. Thanks for the suggestion.

      @@DarrenMostyn I have a guess here, which might be wrong. I think the size of the cube lattices are different. One might be a 17x17x17 grid, the other 33x33x33. One LUT uses a smaller cube than the other, and then trilinear interpolation is going to introduce more error. A dead giveaway for this would be a marked difference in file size.

    Thanks for the pointers on color grading Apple Log from the iPhone 15 pro series. I am doing a lot more work with them and you definitely did educate me a bit more on proper color grading options and settings. Great work as always, Darren. Welcome back. I'm planning on using Apple Log with the iPhone quite a bit this year as a 2nd or 3rd camera so this is super helpful. The biggest tip was the Rec2020 color space. So now I'm all set. I would love to see a video where you show how to grade GoPro flat profile footage as well. I'll be using those in my workflow. As you know, it's quite challenging to get it to match other cameras. Thanks again!

    Darren, this is so useful. One thing I'm still struggling with though is the Rec709 output gamma for a MacBook Pro M1. I've seen conflicting things when googling it. Some say Rec709 A, some say Gamma 2.2. I'm fairly new to Mac so when I used to use a Windows laptop I was comfortable to go with Gamma 2.4. Should I use output Gamma 2.4 regardless for compatibility with people who use Windows? Or do I need to choose the output gamma for my Mac display - which I don't know which to use! Your valuable advice would be much appreciated!! Many thanks!
    Just to add, my MacBook display setting is set to Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits) and the refresh rate is set to ProMotion.

    Hello Darren, is Rec709/G2.4 the standard for uploading to TH-cam? I heard that uploading with Rec2020 or Rec2100/HLG output settings produced a higher quality video, and I've tried it myself, but I'm still not sure what the best approach is.

    Thanks for this video Darren. I’ve been playing around with iPhone 15 Pro Max and the BM Camera App for about a month. It was great that your video confirmed my Resolve project settings. The only difference is that I set up Apple Log/ Rec 2020 in my Project Settings so that I didn’t have to do a CST in my node trees. I always work in DaVinci WG as my intermediate color space, and Rec709/Gamma 2.2 is the final output. Again, all set up in my project settings, Based on other TH-cam videos on the BM Camera App, I’ve been shooting at an ISO of 1250 with a VND. In just experimenting, I’ve found that a lot of color correction isn’t needed for most of the shots. Mostly just tweaks to exposure and contrast. So far, it’s been a fun kit to play with.

    Thanks for the video Darren. I tried to recreate what you did with the greyscale ramp (generator in resolve inside a compound clip). I get a linear waveform by default, but when i try to apply a cst from apple log to rec 709 2.4, my blacks are getting crushed by default. Using the same workspace settings as you. Any ideas? This is on an m1 macbook pro if it matters.

    • @KaurH
      @KaurH 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The blacks get crushed on a grayscale ramp, because Apple log's blackpoint is much higher. If you feed it something other than Apple Log, something that has a lower black point, the blacks just get crushed.
      You can see this by for example going from Gamma 2.4 to Apple Log using a CST.

    Hello Darren. Thank you very much for putting so much effort in your videos. Really helpful information. Can i get your advice on something? I usually use in the same footage material from a mirroless (10 bit 422) ,apple log and D-Cinelike from Dji( which I hope is 10 bit).
    As a workflow, after watching so many videos i decided to go with project settings at color management, color processing mode: HDR DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate and output color space: Rec 709-A( apple user). For color science :Davinci YRGB Color Management.
    After that i click on every video in my timeline and select the Input Color Science that i need. Flog, Apple Log and Rec 709-A for Dji videos. From this i grade as usually with no other CST applied in my timeline.
    Do you think this is correct? Your thoughts on this would be really helpful.

    A few notes on the CST vs LUT comparison you did in the middle of this video.
    - First of all, please note that the CST you are using in those examples is set to "Output Gamma: Use Timeline" which in your case is DaVinci Intermediate. NOT Rec709. Anyways, since the comparisons with the ramp are mainly about banding artefacts in the poorly designed LUT, this point still comes across.
    - The fact that blacks get crushed in the LUT and CST examples is by design. This has to do with how the log OETF is designed. The Arri LUT you are using (shipped by Resolve) is really outdated and actually lifts the shadows up high, quite a bit. Arri released a much more technically accurate LUT long ago. If you compare this newer one to the CST they match quite closely. And they both crush the blacks of the ramp, because this is as I said by design.

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Sven. I didn't have DWG as timeline setting on LUT test, it was 709 default. I also never use the Arri LUT - only CST, it was to show an example of a 'better' tone curve, but appreciate your point. Thank you - very valuable input and appreciated. Darren

    Do you think they're almost crushing the blacks to help with noise reduction in some way?

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      no. It start of the profile. Shooting Apple log gives a higher black point than many profiles so it balances out when CST applied.

  • @GlobalShutterNY
    @GlobalShutterNY 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    BTW - the BlackMagic app allows you to record the Log profile in H.265 compression - still 10 bit - but a LOT more memory friendly than any variation of ProRes. I am not sure that ProRes offers enough extra flexibility in most circumstances to justify the huge extra memory usage and transfer hassles... Thoughts?

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I deliver in whatever format my broadcast spec tells me to. that would never be H265 but is nearly always DNxHR or ProRes 4444. H265 10 bit is my export for my youtubes, yes.

    Hi Darren, I have a question. When editing on the node tree and I’m outputting my colourspace and gamma. If I’m working on an M1 MacBook Pro Would I set my out put or P3-D65 game sRGB to match my screen or would I still keep rec709 Gamma 2.4? Essentially I don’t think everybody watching would be using an apple screen but I want to see the colours as accurately as possible to the exported version.

    • @DarrenMostyn

      output colour space/gamma should match your monitor settings. Your monitor settings should match your delievry requirements.

    Thank you for this and many other great videos. I have the stupidest question imaginable. I have Resolve set to to deliver REC. 709 using the Mostyn best ever node tree. The stupid question is what profile do I use on my monitor? I assume REC 709 but it looks terrible. I'm working offline on a Macbook Pro with a Retina display. (Yes, I know, I need a broadcast monitor but I just want to get in the ballpark. I have clocked a million hours in top end DI suites with famous colorists here in LA but I'm a director not a colorist. This project will eventually be graded by somebody else.) The default ColorLCD profile looks fine. The REC 709 profile is way too dark and the low end is crushed. The dark gray patches in the lower corners of SMPTE bars are not visible. Gray scale, same thing. Does anybody know what I'm not getting?

    Why when I import my Apple Log videos in Davinci, they are already "colored"? In the iPhone or Mac, they are greyed. Like a log file should be. But when I import them in DaVinci, they look like a rec709 video.
