Brand new to davinci but what is the benefit to creating a bunch of different nodes instead of just doing all the color adjustments under same node. i don't get fancy with the color, just to get it looking right.
You can do a basic correction all in one node, but separating out parts of the grade into their own nodes helps you stay organized and allows you to temporarily turn off or make specific adjustments without impacting other nodes. Serial nodes flow or cascade from one node to the next. For example, if you pushed the image to blue in one node and yellow in the next, the two nodes would end up negating each other and the result is a neutral image again. Nodes allow you to do very specific adjustments.

Hey Jamie, great video! Really helpfull for me as a beginner. I have a question though: Is there a general rule when to apply a lut? I thought you first colour correct the scenes and then apply luts. But you started this process with adding a lut. What are the thoughts behind this? Much love from switzerland
Theres rec 709 transform luts that take log or flat footage and roughly get it to a normal color space, and then theres color grading luts that are more of a "look" that give your video a style!
alexjonesedits it should default like what mine looks like. You could try going up to the workspace and adjusting things there maybe. Also it depends if you’re screen is big enough to show them at the same time.
Thanks for all the Resolve tutorials. Much appreciated. Question: Do you have problems importing DJI 4K .MP4 video into Resolve? I get an error that reads 'Media Offline' even when I point to it. No one on the forums is of much help.
@@JamieFenn Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. Based on the title I was expecting a specific thing - like, using LUTs, or laying out nodes, or using a specific tool, etc. So it was confusing when it was just a rundown of your workflow. It is good information and I am far from an expert! One thing worth noting - when looking at the parade, your RGB channels should only be "equal" when the color of that part of the image is greyscale (black/white/grey). So balancing your highlights or shadows might make sense to avoid a color cast there, but its not always appropriate (a bright red balloon in your image would obviously have more R than G or B).
Joe Henry true - I should have been more clear. But this workflow is something I wish I knew before I randomly started messing around. I’ve gotten a ton of positive feedback and the negative is from people who already know this so maybe it was a let down. And yes you’re correct around the RGB.
@@JamieFenn Layers in Premiere is the same concept that you see in Photoshop. Nodes is a different approach to in some respects to do the same thing but they are also use to create special effects. Premier has After effects. Davinci uses notes to achieve the many of the same things without having (in the current versions) to go to an external version. Nodes are actually more flexible but harder to understand. Think of it more as a flow chart of the things you are trying to do. Where layers is like the old projectors with transparencies stacked on top. Also, there are different types of nodes that can give you additional control. Obviously, there is a big learning curve to nodes because they have so many uses.

@@JamieFenn got it👍 and hey its so cool that you take the time to answer all the questions in the comment section. Thank you so much!
I try to keep up :D
Why use a LUT to get to 709 rather than colour management? Thanks mate.
You can use a LUT or correct it to a 709 color space. Either way works
How do you get 2 different colour grading windows open (eg. Colour wheels and blur) at the same time next to each other ?
alexjonesedits it should default like what mine looks like. You could try going up to the workspace and adjusting things there maybe. Also it depends if you’re screen is big enough to show them at the same time.
Jamie Fenn okay thanks for the help!
just subrscribed right now! I have some RED footage with a green color dominant, how can i balance it?
The great thing about davinci is that there could be many ways to fix a problem. If its raw adjust the temp and tint to get correct white balance.
Thanks for all the Resolve tutorials. Much appreciated. Question: Do you have problems importing DJI 4K .MP4 video into Resolve? I get an error that reads 'Media Offline' even when I point to it. No one on the forums is of much help.
Nope no problem.
So...the thing you wish you knew when you started color grading in Resolve was...how to use Resolve?
Joe Henry if this was too basic for you I’m sorry. This wasn’t tailored toward professionals.
How can I easily apply one correction to all my clips, for if they are from one shot that was cut into multiple pieces?
create and apply a power grade. or copy and paste nodes.
@@JamieFenn thanksss , no faster way? like using a group?
Im not sure what you mean by group. Powergrade is what I think you're looking for.
sir can you make a video what the meaning of all converter deliver what render what we need or what are kinds of them when we render the video
Like what exactly? The default settings work great. The manual has detailed specs.
yes sir specaialy when you uplod video in youtube
What effect you used to do the wipe effect of before after ?
My Stock the wipe transition
Just hit the = sign on keyboard to copy color grade from previous clip (while in color tab)
Are the nodes similar to an adjustment layer in Premiere?
Never used premiere so i don't know. Theres an adjustment layer in davinci as well
@@JamieFenn Layers in Premiere is the same concept that you see in Photoshop.
Is this still relevant in DaVinci resolve 17
Yep!
Noticed you have Ableton open on the screen during the intro - do you use it for your audio or was it just a flex? Haha
No I'm not flexing lol... I use it.
@@JamieFenn haha dope! So do we.
Guys ..
Do I need to buy the full version of davince resolve to color grade my footages professionally !!
yoyo2012yoyo Professionally - yes. But if you have to ask that question you should start with the free version first.
Thanks a bunch, but just letting you know the music ducking out when you start talking is more distracting than if it was just on all the time.
Matthew Bowler I thought so too. Next time I will.
Hi, do you have an idea how to convert rec709 to rec2020?
