Morrissey is the best grump personality that came from that whole thing. Whatever you want to call it and whatever you want to say about "it" or him in hindsight. The man doesn't disappoint me in how much animosity his likeness brings today.
I wonder if Morrissey ever saw this clip. I can imagine Morrissey looking confused and a bit put off if he did then grabbing his phone to look up the name Henry Rollins to find out who this charming man is….
I know he was trolling but an American, of all people, saying it’s not difficult to be a bad/unlikeable person when you are born with the handicap of being British in that way is some uniquely wonderful self awareness that only they have 😂
I actually love both Morrissey and H.R. they both have beautiful traits, Henry has this anti-facism thing going on while still being this macho USA man who's music makes me happy and energetic. Morrissey is a sensitive anti-monarch poet who's music makes me feel comfortably depressed, but also makes me happy knowing that he's not another macho american and somebody who I can relate to when it comes to real feelings, but too much hipsters try to act like him. So they're both alright with me.
For everyone going hard on Rollins here, keep in mind that an Australian show called "Rage" probably isn't a venue where people are encouraged to speak kindly about one another, and it's not exactly an *inaccurate* roast of Morrisey. Unlike a lot of musicians that worked with similar styles of music, Morrisey was genuinely misanthropic and miserable, which is why he's turned into the bitter, bigoted piece of shit he is today. On the other hand, Henry Rollins was just playing up an edgy, hard rock, "fuck all that wussy goth music" persona, and is in reality a very nice guy, as we can all see in how he acts in modernity.
The word on the street in Manchester is that Henry was just bitter and twisted because Mozzer had rejected his sexual advances. That might not be true, but I'm sure someone down the boozer told me it was.
Henry you almost kept a straight face ! I am from the UK and was faintly amused, you got the reaction you probably wanted. Lighten up guys and laugh a little :)
I happened to be into Black Flag because of Nirvana a couple of years ago, and I was really taken by surprise by this interview. I cannot understand why Rollins didn't seem to get Moz and his ironic art. I don't see nothing wrong in "November Spawned A Monster", as I don't see nothing wrong in "The National Front Disco", the same way I don't see nothing wrong in "American Waste" or "White Minority" by Black Flag.
Interestingly, Henry Rollins epitomizes everything to me that is wrong with modern music. He seems to be a narcissist totally unaware of his own lack of talent. This is probably why you see him everywhere commenting on everything, over exposing himself but making little music.
No. Rollins has written a slew of books, has travelled the world multiple times over and has had a very successful career since the time of this interview. He's worth something like $6 million. Nowhere near as much money as Morrissey has probably made but he has done very well and has led an extraordinary life. Definitely not relegated to reading poetry in a strip mall. I don't subscribe to what he said here on RAGE but it's ancient history and we are all guilty of saying dumb things sometimes.
Metalheads would not appreciate the smiths. That's one of the reasons they were so great. Their music spoke to people henry rollins would'nt appreciate. You know anyone who tags morrissey miserable is lazy. His lyrics are some of the funniest ever written. Maybe not to an american of a certain type though.
i had a lot of respect for henry,it's just gone down a tad now (i'm sorry i'm english and like morrissey btw ;-) hopefully he has grown up a bit since then.
This was 30 YEARS AGO. From the Guardian, 2016: On reflection, do you think it was harsh to say you wanted to make a house record out of the sound of Morrissey being burned to death? 'Well, I like the guy. I think he’s very intelligent and has real good taste in music. It’s nothing I’d say on stage now because I think it’s poorly meant, but that’s why we humans are allowed subtly evolve here and there. There are definitely some people I wouldn’t mind seeing burned to death - I absolutely have a kill list. But not good old Morrissey. I think the world is a much better place with him in it.'
So, he either hates him or he absolutely loves him... I'd quite honestly bet the latter. I could see Hardcore Henry acting on a perceived need to denounce Morrissey and feeling conflicted. Rollins is a sharp guy that's made a career out of music. He's keenly aware of Morrisseys uncanny lyrical ability and secretly desires a piece of it for himself. Both fronted massive bands known for their messages, both vocals only, both have probably poked a dude. Power couple right here.
Never met either one but man, Morrissey is 100x the artist that Henry Rollins is. This is like listening to the Justin Beiber talk trash about Bach. Also I thought Henry Rollins was a deeper guy than this. He seems to dislike Morissey because of what he looks like, not what he stands for. This kind of attitude is why we need more people like Morissey. Morissey's got 10 times the guts Henry Rollins has, I don't care where they're from. Morissey lives in LA so hopefully that satisfies Mr Rollins
Henry Rollins did a Gap ad, which I think we can all agree means he is a corporate stooge who stands for nothing beyond self-promotion... and maybe exploiting third world sweatshop labor.
The first time I've completely disagreed with Rollins. Morrissey is a beautiful man and one of the greatest lyricists (maybe the best) ever. He suffered depression, clearly something Rollins does not understand, and with that related to a lot of people, including me.
Did you just say greatest lyricist, as much as I hate responding to old comments I’ll stop you there. Here’s real lyricists, Dylan, Lennon, Gunthrie, and Williams Sr. Also “he suffered from depression” isn’t any testament to anything (I struggle with ocd, anxiety and depression and I don’t act like I’m gods gift to the earth). Fuck Morrissey, he’s a diva who cancel majority of his shows, because he’s offended by someone else’s lifestyle. At least Rollins never called an entire race of people a subspecies.
@@FaithlessLooter animal rights is also something many people don't understand. killing and eating animals is not a "lifestyle". "the choice I have made may seem strange to you. but who asked you, anyway? it's my life to wreck my own way"
thedeadserious Bud the human body is made to eat meat. We along with the apes we evolved from are omnivores. So yes it is a lifestyle and good job concentrating on literally the least important point of my comment.
@@FaithlessLooter it's 2018 and the human body is doing well without meat - then it becomes a choice. actually my comment answered more than that: if you don't understand animal rights, you don't understand his mindset and therefore not his ways and words and might mistake it for "diva" and "racism". i also wanted to comment that i also think that morrissey is an outstanding lyricist (i don't care if he is the best, i'm not into favouritism). that i have no idea why you mentioned your struggles and if you think that would be a testament to anything, but then i didn't want to be rude.
I like most of his interviews (not this one) and some of his spoken word stuff. His music is....OK. The Smiths are genius and Morrissey's solo stuff is often great.

Morrissey is the best grump personality that came from that whole thing. Whatever you want to call it and whatever you want to say about "it" or him in hindsight. The man doesn't disappoint me in how much animosity his likeness brings today.
I’m seeing this for the first time at 6:34 am. It’s such a cheery start to my day. Henry paints such a wonderful visual.
Not sure why he's so down on England when he loves so many bands that come from there
I think he read some of the history of England...
"Cheer up Morrissey, it's not that bad"
From the guy who literally wrote a song called Depression.
greg ginn wrote depression
^ dumbass
This is why I think Rollins, Robert Smith, Peter Hook, and John Lydon would have a great night out together....
this makes me have a visceral reaction, but I don't know what I'm feeling. All I know is I'm feeling a lot of it
Maybe it's dread, maybe it's arousal, idk
Robert Smith is cool but the rest are a bunch of drama queens
You will never and have never even been able to make one song as good as any of his.
I wonder if Morrissey ever saw this clip. I can imagine Morrissey looking confused and a bit put off if he did then grabbing his phone to look up the name Henry Rollins to find out who this charming man is….
Wow! Jealousy certainly breeds contempt!
I know he was trolling but an American, of all people, saying it’s not difficult to be a bad/unlikeable person when you are born with the handicap of being British in that way is some uniquely wonderful self awareness that only they have 😂
indeed, so many Americans detest each other and yet they feel others from outside their nation should not be allowed to :)
I love the way he says "November spawned a monster"... Fucking cracks me up every time xD
they are basically the same person, except one of them can sing
Three Beatles stayed living in England. One Beatle moved to America. A question Mr Rollins: can you name which Beatle was shot?
I'll accept all this when Henry (who I like and respect) writes a song, any song, as good as 90% of The Smiths output.
I like and respect Rollins too - and I'll add, or as good as 50% of Morrissey's solo output.
Morrissey is nothing without Johnny Marr. Mart’s work with Electronic is every bit as good as the Smiths sans Morrissey’s moping.
How about morrissey and rollins in a fight?
“Rejection is one thing, rejection from a fool is cruel”
I'm not sure what will be left of Henri Rollins, his stuff aged so fast, but some songs from The Smith, they are here forever, that is for sure.
Henry and his beautiful thick neck
@Crawling Chaos I think Inyourlap has another snake in mind, and since this is 90’s Henry Rollins in question, I can’t blame them.
He's not a bigoted piece of shite. It sounds like you have this attitude. The irony!
Rollins and Morrissey are international counterparts.
The word on the street in Manchester is that Henry was just bitter and twisted because Mozzer had rejected his sexual advances. That might not be true, but I'm sure someone down the boozer told me it was.
Sounds like it must be tough having an eighth of Morrissey's talent. The difference is if Rollins was set on fire nobody would notice or give a shit.
Henry Rollins is what wall punching, Monster energy drinkers aspire to grow up to be
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nahh more like Ivan Moody from Five Finger Death Punch. That guy embodies every Kyle like behaviour and stereotype.
I know every word to many Smith's songs! What was your song called, I forget?
It’s so easy to laugh, it’s so easy to hate. It takes guts to be gentle and kind.
"Morrissey embodies every horrible trait a person can possess."
Funny. That's how most people feel about Henry Rollins.
Disembodies he said
He's American so, he has a handicap anyway.
Morrissey is my spirit animal
Interestingly, Henry Rollins epitomizes everything to me that is wrong with modern music. He seems to be a narcissist totally unaware of his own lack of talent. This is probably why you see him everywhere commenting on everything, over exposing himself but making little music.
Don't hold back Henry, tell us what you really think!
What point is there in ripping another artist? Unless it's for stealing your music, who cares what somebody else likes or doesn't like?
Exactly. Yes yes yes. Please listen to this guy everyone. A very good summary of a very complex and huge argument. Thumbs up.
Because it’s funny and entertaining
@@swirlingfudge oh, until it's directed at a minority or female; then it's "hateful."
The Smiths are timeless while Black Flag weren’t even the best hardcore band lmao
Morrissey is still touring the world into his 60s and Rollins is reading hackneyed poetry in some strip mall somewhere. Cope and seethe.
In all fairness, Henry wanted to retire from singing and not be the old rocker on stage at 70.
at least Rollins actually shows up for the shows he books and doesnt stroke his ego when he does.
@@tukpunker Yawn. Next
@@No-km6he right? that's exactly what people do at Morissey shows.
Aye, OK, Rollins... I think you fancy the guy, mate.
You mean snobs who think they're special?
@Cherry Red Do you twirl around in your bedroom dancing like Morrissey?Lol
when I have to wait twenty seconds for a TH-cam advert to be gone..
i'm not waiting around
i had a lot of respect for henry,it's just gone down a tad now (i'm sorry i'm english and like morrissey btw ;-)
hopefully he has grown up a bit since then.
morrissey is a whiny idiot, doesnt matter if he's english or not
he's actually gotten worse...
@James Boxman You sound like and idiot yourself, and you’re whining as well.
This was 30 YEARS AGO. From the Guardian, 2016:
On reflection, do you think it was harsh to say you wanted to make a house record out of the sound of Morrissey being burned to death?
'Well, I like the guy. I think he’s very intelligent and has real good taste in music. It’s nothing I’d say on stage now because I think it’s poorly meant, but that’s why we humans are allowed subtly evolve here and there. There are definitely some people I wouldn’t mind seeing burned to death - I absolutely have a kill list. But not good old Morrissey. I think the world is a much better place with him in it.'
The fact I had to google who Rollins is says it all.
This comment section is just an excuse to quote Smiths lyrics out of context. And I’m here for it.
The people Rollins’ idolises vs those who he doesn’t speaks volumes
Henry Rollins did a Gap ad, which I think we can all agree means he is a corporate stooge who stands for nothing beyond self-promotion... and maybe exploiting third world sweatshop labor.
So, come on Henry tell us how you really feel.
😂
Yes Henry , I love him too
The first time I've completely disagreed with Rollins. Morrissey is a beautiful man and one of the greatest lyricists (maybe the best) ever. He suffered depression, clearly something Rollins does not understand, and with that related to a lot of people, including me.
Ben Jones Morrisey is a piece of human garbage tho
I cannot honestly remember the last time I purchased a Henry Rollins record.. cd, song or other
I like most of his interviews (not this one) and some of his spoken word stuff. His music is....OK. The Smiths are genius and Morrissey's solo stuff is often great.
Henry Rollins is a great sh*t-talker. His last comment was pure gold. If only....
Thumbs up for brutal honesty not that I agree. Refreshing to see somebody not fear of speaking what he thinks. Rollins rules!
honesty is overrated. having insight and helping others have insight helps, not your opinions
Young Henry Rollins.. such a funny character. Awesome fella.. too bad he couldn’t sing one tenth as good as Morrissey could 😅
A very awkward declaration of love.
I'm unfamiliar with Henry's lyrics. I'm gonna check them out. They must be incredible.
