I find sustained release caffeine to be a subtle and effective addition in the morning especially before the stimulant medication begins to take effect.
Somtimes when I run out of my stims I take 200mg of caffeine tablets. It’s definitely helpful. It’s very very subtle for me, I don’t feel any physical discomfort unless I take 400mg, at which point I feel nauseous for the whole day. For the benifits, It helps with wakefulness, if I don’t take any stims and no caffeine, life is very very miserable, I have such low energy I just want to lie in bed without doing any type of routine. So it helps in that reguard, and it seems to subtly increase focus aswell. It’s not something you can feel, but just somthing i was able to see from the metrics of work I was able to put out.
Can’t believe I missed this one! Assuming this was a live chat, but likely wasn’t? However, I Must’ve not seen the heads up post that this is coming out today. Yeah I drink coffee, not too much but 12-24 Oz daily in the am hours. And yup I have ADD. 😅
Seems like the two groups of colleagues don't disagree on the facts so much. Caffeine is a stimulant, marginally improves ADHD symptoms, may therefore reduce necessary prescription dose, and also is a very weak stimulant compared to its negative, extra-stimulatory effects, versus prescription stimulants. I drink black coffee throughout the day and it helps with keeping food portions smaller. More than anything, I keep doing it to not have terrible headaches for a week.
Welcome to the world of nutrient studies! If we want to check out effects we either can't get it funded or can't blind it (or both!). I found the estrogen reference fascinating being in menopause - because on one side I'm getting age sensitivity and the other reduced sensitivity from reducing estrogen.
Not self administered in animal models? HMM maybe the diuretic effects, IMO the worst part is the peeing. I definitely think L-theanine is worth adding to reduce the physical effects of higher doses of caffeine.
Probably just taste aversion, as it is a bitter alkaloid, and most animals avoid them because they often signal poison. Diuresis happens hours after ingestion, so it is not that likely the rat would make that association.
I used to use nicotine toothpicks as sustained release nicotine while I worked. It made me a lot less lazy, it just took less mental effort to do things I would usually be groggy about, and my memory improved. It was a pretty noticeable improvement. Like the numbers I was able to out out at work was actually higher from more focus, so it’s not strictly “I feel” type of thing.
@@Ness-xz1yp yes, you need a periodic dose of it because of the low half life. like in my case I needed to use 1-2 tooth pics an hour. Each was 3mg. Some people state that the nicotine patches can work, but for me, it felt like absolutely nothing. 21 mg over 24 hours is less than a mg an hour. Not nearly enough for some people. I was thinking about asking my psychiatrist about the nicotine cessation drug drjohnkruse mentioned a while back, because I belived it would be the closest thing to pill extended release nicotine.
I make bad decisions on Caffeine, but I use it daily.

Caffeine relaxes me and induces lethargy. I sleep fine on two cups of coffee. Surprised this isn't more common in ADHD. I didn't think I was alone.
Caffeine makes me jittery, gives me cold sweats, bad headaches and I end up more tired despite being less sleepy
well said. 💙🥩
That's a pretty good summary of caffeine's potential downsides.
@@DrJohnKruse I actually stopped all medication for this exact reason

Caffeine makes some tired and energizes others. I wonder if two separate disorders are being identified as the same thing.
I think the big issue is the dose. WIth a high enough dose most people will be revved up.
❤

This was a re-release of a previous recording, with the sound improved.
Caffeine makes high… no question
Thank you!
Caffeine is sacred!

I do the same, if not nobody likes how hyper I get & im 58 yrs.😊
Yes, its good that there is agreement regarding the facts.

Any data on nicotine & adhd? I have a friend who swears nicotine gum helps hers but that’s a sample size of 1
I would guess it's because nicotine is a stimulant

He has a video on this. Nicotine does appear to help a lot, but it has a half-life of only ~2 hours, so not worth it imo.
Here's my nicotine and ADHD video, and yes it can help with ADHD: th-cam.com/video/8JFmG2yTf4E/w-d-xo.html
