    So happy to see a landing in my hometown! Approach on 16 offers a spectacular view of the city which is even better during nighttime!
    The reason they instructed you to expedite crossing rwy 28 is because another aircraft has already lined-up for departure, you can hear the instruction at 16:22. The aircraft is from the Hellenic Fire Service and they wanted to fill-up with water. At 24:32, they've been instructed to turn left in order to free the final of rwy 28 for departures and to only do water extraction in a position that does not affect the departures, as well as, not going over 500ft. It's a little weird the communication was in Greek while in fact Thessaloniki is an international airport with lots of international traffic.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Thank you very much for watching and for the translation of the Greek instructions which were given to other airplanes by ATC. I would prefer that all the communication at international airports is done in English. But on the other hand, I can understand that fire fighting services, private pilots and other local airplanes want to communicate in their native language.

  • @dimitris70080
    @dimitris70080 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Personally, having the knowledge and skills to fly an airplane of 70 tonnes doesn't impress me as much as the ability to understand what people who don't have English as their native language are saying through the radio.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thie arrival and departure times at the gate are tracked and shall be in accordance to the coordinated airport slot +/- 14 minutes. Sometimes it is impossible to operate in this time frame. My understanding is that a few flights may arrive or depart outside of that window, but in general this should be avoided. Reason is that the airport is not that large and for a smooth operation everybody has to try to stay in the coordinated time frames. I do not know if there are fines or extra fees if you operate outside of the time frame.

      @@ApproachandDepartureVideos It's both completely understandable but also interesting that the controller can't waive this restriction if it suits them. At least the marshaller got a bit of an extra workout. :)

      Thanks for watching and your good feedback! At this airport, we have to make sure that we arrive at the gate during the time frame of the coordinated airport slot +/- 14 minutes. Sometimes this is a very difficult task. Especially at this flight. We were advised by ATC to fly high speed enroute, had tailwind and we got a much shorter approach than expected.

    Excellent video. Q - @12:00 what does the process "Managed speed" mean?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      First of all: Thank you very much for supporting the channel as a member! The speed in an Airbus A320 can be selected of managed. Selected means that the pilot dials whatever speed he or she wants into the FCU panel and then the plane tries to fly this speed until another speed will be selected. Managed means that the Airbus flies the speed which is preprogrammed for the current situation. The speed is dependent on the cost index, flight phase, the altitude, distance from the runway, the current flap/slat configuration of the plane and (during the final approach) from the current wind and the entered tower wind iIf we want to fly a selected speed, we need to pull the speed knob and set the speed. If we want to fly a manged speed, we have to push the speed knob. Here, we changed from selected to managed speed. Afterwards, you can see on the PFD that the speed target changes on its own depending on the situation.

    You are an excellent ambassador and advert for Eurowings. I have one question: When you taxi using only engine do you have to somehow adjust steering, etc for an asymmetric thrust?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for your kind words! Sure, the thrust is asymmetric during single engine taxi in. Most of the taxiing is done with idle thrust and that requires only none to very light compensation for the asymmetric thrust. If we add more thrust, more compensation may be needed. We just keep the plane on the centerline of the taxiway with the tiller and/or the rudder pedals. It is difficult to estimate how much the required input would differ compared to doulble engine taxi in. Have a nice day!

    Zwei Fragen für mich als Sesselflieger. Auf der Anflugkarte sind zwei Decision Heights eingezeichnet, einmal für GA 4% (habt ihr gewählt) und einmal für 2.5%. Das ist die mögliche Steigrate beim Go-Around, oder? Wer schneller steigt, darf später entscheiden?
    Zweite Frage, sind das Eurowings-Charts? Auf den Jeppesen Charts ist die DH mit 214 ft angegeben.

    • @Hensch96

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wir haben vor dem Anflug die Performance für die Landung und einen möglichen Go Around ausgerechnet. Die 4 % waren kein Problem. Sie beziehen sich auf den erforderlichen Steiggradienten im Single Engine Fall. Deshalb konnten wir das niedrigere Minimum verwenden. Bei dem guten Wetter war es natürlich nicht entscheidend, da wir schon sehr früh die Landebahn gesehen haben. Wir benutzen Lido Karten, die von Lufthansa Systems angeboten werden. Am Ende des Videos sind alle von uns verwendeten Karten im Vollformat zu sehen. Jeppesen gibt die MDA oder die DA auf 1 Fuss genau an. Lido rundet hier auf die nâchsten 10 auf. Statt 214 Fuß sind es bei Lido 220 Fuß. Ab CAT 2 ist Lido auch auf 1 Fuß genau.

We are talking bout the 1,43 / 0,6 lnd factor right? Thanks in advance and have a good week!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and your kind words! When we are talking about landing distances in the approach briefing, we talk about the real landing distances, calculated with the actual weight, weather, runway conditions, use of reverse, brakes and other approach details. The Airbus Flysmart landing module calculates the landing distance for us. This is from 50 feet over the threshold until a full stop. Flysmart calculates also a factorized landing distance. This is the calculated landing distance plus a 15 percent margin. For safety reasons, we always make sure that the factorized landing distance is not longer than the available runway length.

    What's the deal with the "earliest on-blocks time" ? I mean if the gate was still blocked or something, ok, but that was not the case. Looks a bit like a waste of time actually, having to taxi super-slow... Are there fines at some airports if you arrive "too early"?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Due to capacity reasons, the airlines have to obtain coordinated arrival and departure times (airport slots). These slots have a +/- 14 minutes window. For a smooth airport operation, operating outside the window has to be avoided whenever possible. I do not know about fines. The worst case would be to loose the airport slot completely after operating too often outside the slot window.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct. We followed the instruction to descent to FL110 but did not read the FL 110 back. ATC gets a transmission from our transponder which shows the selected altitude in our flight management system. I assume that ATC instead of asking for a verbal confirmation just checked our selected altitude on the radar screen. It happens once in a while that there is something missing in a readback. Especially if lots of different information and instructions are transmitted at the same transmission.

      Thanks for watching and the kind words! The operation at crowded airports is based on airport slots which are coordinated long before the flight day. Most of the time this is the deparure and arrival time in the passenger ticket. The normal operating window is plus minus 14 minutes to keep the airport traffic in good order. Another great video. My favourite channel, I love the style, the video length and the content is a great balance which suits the aviation enthusiast, I am glad you don’t edit it with over the top extra graphics etc!!! 2 questions: when crossing another runway, do you always switch on landing lights and strobe to cross, or only when crossing “active “ runways? And regarding your early arrival and amusing taxi speed! Can you explain why you have an earliest possible arrival time? Can you not check that in cruise and reduce mach a little. Do you need to comment on your post flight report about why you arrived early? I’m just very curious. Many thanks for you me video and especially your time in answering the communities questions, greetings from LSZH.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the friendly words! If crossing runways, we switch on the strobes and the taxi and turnoff lights. Sure, we could add landing lights, if we deem it necessary. But usually not. The wind was in favor of an early arrival. So we tried to reduce speed enroute to minimum. But ATC did not want that. Instead we had to fly high speed due to other traffic. The same situation was in the descent and during the first part of taxi-in. The airport slot is coordinated long before the flight day at airports like Thessaloniki for a smooth operation. Due to limited capacity this is needed. We always try to arrive in the +/- 14 minutes window. If we do not make it in that window it counts as arrival out of the slot time. We have to avoid it. But sometimes it is not possible to arrive in the time frame. If we do that too often, we may loose the slot for the flight. Some airports even have fines.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      I am very sorry to hear that.
      It is always difficult to find the right balance between the interest of the people who want to travel from an airport close to the city and the people who are living close to the airport and want to get a good amount of sleep during the night.
      Lots of countries, like the USA, weigh the interest of aviation and the flying people very high. They keep their airports 24 hours a day open and say that usually the airport was there first and the people who bought cheap lots near it knew about the fact before they moved to the area.
      In Germany, they even close Frankfurt, Munich or Berlin airport at a certain time in the evening and if the airplanes are not in the air, they have to taxi back to the terminal and the passengers have to sleep on emergency beds in the terminal. Regulations like this one together with high taxes and fees drive foreign airlines away from Germany. They reduce then number of flights or close bases completely,
