The Milgauss. A cult classic but a watch that today also seems irrelevant. We chase them because of the character and quirks of the model but not its properties. So will it be discontinued or updated? A new caliber, maybe with some help from the Air-King? 🥃

The milgauss z blue is easily one on the most beautiful Rolex’s.

Can't deny the beauty of that dial. Same as the Hulk dial, the Z-blue reigns supreme! 🥃

I get the love for the Z-blue, but there is something about the matt black (almost geyish) dial + the green crystal that is just... perfection. A birth-year black dial 1019 is and will forever be my grail watch... one can only dream 😊
      Greetings to all!

Although the Milgauss harks back to a time (pun intended) when magnetism was a bigger issue I would love for it to continue in its current guise but maybe add the later 3230 movement and some minor case re-profiling. I like the green crystal and the lightening bolt second hand as it adds that fun and character to the watch. Many mechanical watches still have ferrous metal balance springs but as you say there are a great many that are now more resilient to magnetic fields so it's less of an issue. You make a very good point though as to is this watch necessary now and that could also be the same for any mechanical watch. Tough solar powered digital watches have existed for years that do not require a mechanical service but we still buy mechanical watches with there little beating hearts, I guess they just feel that they are a little more 'organic' as like us unless they are fed they will stop, if they are not cared for when they they may die if they become ill.

The Z-blue Milgauss is my favourite current Roll-eye. The polished centre links are the only ‘non toolish’ aspect of the Watch that make it typically a piece of jewellery rather than a tool Watch which all Rolex have become unfortunately.
If not discontinued this year I can only see something mild like crown guards being added to the Watch, just like happened to the Air-King.
If only Rolex would look back to past references and do reissue takes on their designs they would have a whole new customer base. A 1019 reissued design would be amazing like you said. However, Rolex are too conservative for that and leave the experimental stuff to their baby brother - Tudor.
Another thought provoking video here Boet. This is why we love your work. Keep it coming! ✊

I'd like to see the Milgauss collection split into two, much like the Explorer. 1 would be the archetypical lab/research facility watch for engineers, scientist/doctors: clinical, professional, smart - perhaps in a couple of colours, one for the professionally minded and one for the more relaxed lab-coat wearer (SPACE BATS!!). The Milgauss 2 would be for the field engineer/doctor/scientist: rugged, precise, super legible, perhaps with some form of secondary timing aid. Alas, I suspect we'll get a new crown guard. Snore.

The Z-Blue Milgauss with orange lightning seconds hand is my favorite Rolex. If discontinued, I imagine prices for pre-owned models fluctuating drastically...which sucks 'cuz I'd want my first (and maybe only) Rolex to be the Z-Blue.
Perhaps Rolex will do a refresh and deliver something incredible. But Rolex isn't "Born to Dare" and will likely cast off the Milgauss into retirement. Oh well...

It's not the number of Milguass watches they sell but rather the amount of advertising it represents for the brand. Squirkiness! 😉 It's a big detractor that so many pieces don't have that adjust... feels so bizarre in 2023. Probably why I stick primarily to straps these days (especially the change in weather factoring in) Hope you've had a grand weekend Chilli!

Maybe underappreciated because it does not confer bragging rights which are essential for most so-called watch enthusiasts. But what the Z Blue lacks in flex factor, it has in spades in beauty. And who really needs yet another bloody back-dialled sports watch with a rotating bezel ?

It believe it was a variation of the turn-o-graph bezel, where the 1 would signify 10 and the 2 would signify 20. Basically just like any other timing bezel BUT it had a point of difference next to the Sub & GMT of the time. Style for style sake at the end of the day 😉

I love the Z-Blue Milgauss as it is. It’s my favorite contemporary Rolex. I hope they keep it and just upgrade the movement. Maybe make it the first Rolex sports watch to incorporate the brand’s silicon hairspring. Currently only used on some of their ladies watches for some reason 🤷‍♂️ it would fit in with the Milgauss’s history as an anti-magnetic engineers watch, as silicon is completely non-magnetic, unlike Rolex’s Parachrom hairsprings.

It acts like a 10 - 50 on a regular bezel. So 1=10 and so on. I think this was just a style over substance choice in the 50's to differ it from the turnograph, Sub and GMT 😉

Thanks for the video! I think the last generation of Milgauss has put the model into luxury and furthest from the tool watch it used to be. With no longer any purpose (all models are now anti-magnetic), I fear Rolex won’t have the courage to bring it back with a bezel etc. I suspect they will give it the same treatment as the air king (as you said). If they could go further than that, it would be great, but Rolex hasn’t been going in that direction. We shall see! 👍

Honestly, I don't like that mockup Milgauss. I LIKE the current Milgauss because it's sooo different fro all the other Rolex's. Its only similarity is the case and bracelet. I wish it would get even more unique on both of those counts. The Milgauss is Rolex letting its hair down. The mockup makes it look like an only slightly tweaked Sub. We already have those: Sub, Sea Dweller, Super Ocean, GMT. Take your pick. That look is covered sufficiently.
Now, if you want to take that mockup, add back the orange hand, the colored dial, and the colored glass...nooooow we're talkin!

Rotating bezel (similar to turno graph or original bezel it came out with)

I have black dial gv, it's not exactly the easiest watch to match unless you prefer dressing yourself in a monotone colour most of the time, which I do.
I paired it with a curved end black rubber strap with deployant clasp, the unique green crystal and quirky orange second hand just giving the right mix of pop, doesn't scream like crazy, and I love it.
In fact l, I like most unpopular rolexs rather than the usual bling bling sub / GMTs. Should Rolex choose to discontinue it.... fine by me lol, wouldn't make me like it any less.

Yes, pigs can fly and the Monochrome version of the Milgauss deserves to be made. The thing about the rotating bezel is, I think, more of a marketing challenge than it is to find some inherent rationale for its existence. Why not combine the antimagnetic qualities of Milgauss with this bezel to track a second timezone; its eminently practical, cost effective, and not often seen as one of the few that come to mind is on the bezel of the Tudor Heritage Chronograph, Monte Carlo. Anyway, one can dream of flying pigs and a new interpretation of the Milgauss.
