Impressive how Jen's first roll led to the opportunity to explain so many important rules right away. :)

I've been hoping this one will get the votes for a runthrough! After hearing it mentioned in a number of top 10's it had me curious. I love the wooden peg board, so smartly designed than a bunch of table hogging cubes. Definitely adding to my list to pick up one day, a civilization game that won't take hours to play, love it. Thanks Rahdo!

Wow, this takes me back. One of the first games I ever played during my transition into board games. We used to play the hell out of it until we realized how OP Quarry is, and it kinda killed it. But it still holds a special place.

I actually like the score page from Ancient Empires unofficial expansion which is a file downloadable from Board Game Geek to play this game. It kind of takes the hardship out of this game by providing you some production buildings you can build that makes your empire more self-sufficient. It also breaks the monuments down to 5 cultures, giving you bonus points for completing all of a culture. It also allows you to go to 8 developments. It's a lot better than the Late Bronze age score sheet.

One of my boards needs a little more drilling out. One of the goods pegs just doesn't sit properly in it - always loose. Still - a fun game and one we play more often than others. Easy to pick up, easy to make decisions, fun but minor "take that" moments. We played the other day w/ a friend who won because she just raced through buying developments and ended the game w/ 5 cheaper developments while we were struggling and planning to get the more expensive ones. She really enjoyed it.
Also worth mentioning the Iron Age - separate game w/ slightly different options for what to do with your dice. The original KS release came w/ a box big enough to hold all of the boards and laminated scoresheets. Not big enough for boards with the scorepads as they exist now. It's not quite as quick as the Bronze age, but still a fun game.

Small nitpick: you didn't play food correctly after you got Agriculture. You shorted yourself some food.

I have been considering this game but was wondering if i should get the Iron Age one instead. Do you have a preference?
Edit: typed this before I saw the end of the video. If anyone else has some insight concerning my comment, it would be much appreciated.

How does this compare to Nations the Dice game?
It looks really neat and clean to me :-)
Me and my girlfriend was in Malta in September, really nice. I sure will come back.

both great, but this one is better. however nations: TDG just got a really cool expansion that might put it over the top :)

Damn, looks so cool. Too bad it won't fly on my group or with my brother. Too economic for the group, too "dice based" for my brother.
I might get it anyway for the solo rules, though.

Seems to share some similarities with No Siesta! How would you compare them?

    • @EclecticCamel
      @EclecticCamel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Not very similar at all, really.

TheGreatHamEl You race to fill carts in NS, here you race to buildings. You can purchase powers to enhance or break rules in both games, or score bonus points. Clearly a difference is in how you obtain your resources, drafting Vs rolling your own set of dice. Seem pretty similar to me.

      They aren't.

Filling a cart in No Siesta does not affect other players who want to fill them, so no comparison to the monuments. There is nothing in No Siesta that matches the skulls, either. Resource caching also works completely different.
Apart from "roll dice and cross off things on paper", they have nothing in common.

I think this game would be much more popular if it had some real components, instead of a sheet of paper and this block of wood. Yes, the portability is definitely an advantage, but I think for most people a great artwork and components would enhance the game experience a lot. With some designing tweaks it could have been resolved with a bunch of development and monument cards and still maintain the portability of the game.

I dunno, I actually kinda like the block of wood with the pegs and the wooden dice. It's like cribbage and yahtzee got together and had a more interesting love child. This would make an excellent pub game as I wouldn't have to worry about beer damaging precious cardboard or cards. And you could laminate the score sheets and use a dry erase!

There is actually a whole genre of "Roll-N-Write" games out there. I own several and enjoy them all.

I don't deny it's an excellent game as well as the similar games. I only pointed out that a couple of potential buyers may skip this game purely for it's appearance. Like me for example.

True enough. For those that would like more of a board game with cards, there is always the excellent Peloponnes as well as more epic civ games like Through the Ages or Nations. Roll TtA fills the niche of a compact and more portable civ game - not sure how Nations the Dice Game compares.
