    I like the idea of the doom points. Giving the dm their own inspiration pool.

    Sounds like a nice blend between dnd and pathfinder; a more complex 5e and an easier to learn/pick up pathfinder

    I'm loving Tales of the Valiant. I wouldn't be playing 5e-flavoured D&D if it weren't for Kobold Press, at this point.

    They also have their implementation of the Luck system for bonuses on D20 rolls, or re-roll. I like that for players. It offsets Doom points for GMs.

    Definitely intrigued by this new iteration of 5e. Definitely different enough to be unique.

    Thanks for the quick run down. Sounds like if you want to continue playing 5e, but do not want to buy WotC books or want to supplement your already 5e library TotV is a good option. TotV has some variant rules, and over all its still very much 5e at its core.

    Don't know much about Tales of the Valiant so far. I own now from Kobold Press all the Tome of Beasts, Tome of Heroes, Deep Magic and Vault of Magic (though I've only used a few backgrounds from Tome of Heroes at this point). But I didn't hesistate to back the kickstarter for it as it looks so good.

    I still like players get a nat one, then I get a doom point.
    It seems like the creatures will be really op with the cr to doom point ratio. But I will see this weekend.

    • @littlelostphoenix
      @littlelostphoenix ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ToV players and monsters will be slightly more powerful than standard 5E. I think they are re-doing the CR calculations to get them a bit closer to expected. I know in the years I've been playing with Kobold Press monsters, the CR rating skews higher than WotC monsters.

    • @michaelpinkston2602

      @@littlelostphoenix I totally get that. I just need to try it KP's way and see if it makes for an enjoyable encounter for everyone

      Had 3 encounters and pushed the characters.
      Two went down against a shadow drake. (highly recommend them)
      I used Matt colville's encounter builder from Flee, Mortals. That worked spot on.
      I also used the recommended doom points from the ToV alpha book.
      The characters were in shock and horrified when the drake got back to back breath weapons because it burned off a doom point.
      They seemed to love the challenge.

    The ability scores are not higher. They integrated the +2/+1 racial bonus into the stat generation. They do allow for higher scores (up to 18) if you use the point buy system

    The GM using doom to give a PC disadvantage on a roll is going to feel very bad. That's not going to make the final release.

    the new 5.5e playtest has backpedaled on some good ideas like druid wildshape becoming more pathfinder-y. Its a good chance for TotV to pick that up and just run with it since it got good responses and would streamline that part of the game. "Doom" and "Luck" are really game-y though, I might ditch those.

    • @saraphys5555
      @saraphys5555 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So when you say "pathfinder-y", you mean 3.5-y, right?

    • @spooderous
      @spooderous ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really gamey because it's a game. I've played with it has a replacement to inspiration and every player loves it. Doom points are also nice to give the DM a little something else to use.

    Is your content on ToV sponsored?

    • @MrTarrasque
      @MrTarrasque  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, but not in the ‘classic way’. I am actually thinking about doing a video on this but here is the short answer:
      Due to my enthousiasm for their products they put me on the list to recieve everything from them without me asking and they made me an affiliate. Meaning I get some cash. BUT it’s very important for me that I don’t ever get scrips from them or something like that. I choose what I talk about, when I talk about it. I have said some negative things about Tales of the Valiant and have refused to review some of their books.
      So it’s not a classic ‘hey, here’s 1000000bucks for you to do a video on this and say that’
      If you have any questions, shoot.

    • @LordOfFlies
      @LordOfFlies 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MrTarrasque Okay, thank you for your candidness! Wish there were more reviews of third party content that wasn't sponsored or affiliated like in your case. Allthough I dont doubt you truly try to be as unbaised and fair as you can, it becomes very hard to do that when you have a connection with the product. Similar to how one might talk about a friend one has. Even if you try to be as candid as possible your subconscius has inevitably become "tainted".
      But hope you keep up your high quality reviews, this is an interesting product nonetheless!

    • @MrTarrasque
      @MrTarrasque  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @LordOfFlies you are right, I kinda sometimes even say that I am bias just because KP has helped my channel grow so much that I just like them without trying. I am sometimes blind to their negatives and when people point out some downsides of a certain book I go ‘oh shit you are right’.
      So yes, I am just a human being trying to give good consumer advice but I am flawed like anybody.

    Not sure really...I was super hyped when black flag was announced but I suppose Im too old to appreciate these kind of changes. At this point, the only thing that kept me on 5e was a huge library of books (pretty much all official 5E, and most of Kobold press..plus others). Im pretty sure Im in the minority and thats ok but personally, I did like more restrictions in earlier editions...the direction that WotC aswell is heading, everything can be combined with anything, negative stats are bad (so noone can say orcs are less smart than elves), wizards in platemail, characters having 5 classes....not really my cup of tea. For some misguided reason, I had pictured Kobold Press to go into a very different direction than they do here.

    • @MrTarrasque
      @MrTarrasque  ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually understand what you are saying. And in a way I also feel that a game needs ‘walls’ to stay inside off. It’s weird because at the same time I like being able to combine stuff. But I could build a wandering dwarf in any TTRPG, I don’t need mechanics for it persé…

  • @sylvaincousineau5073
    @sylvaincousineau5073 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nah ! Level Up A5e is the D&D on steroids you're looking for . But i'm certain Black Flag will be fine and have a better development / evolution in the long run that whatever WotC have planed .
    LMAO at the ending .

  • @ToddPutnam
    @ToddPutnam ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree. It's 5e with even more powerful characters. I love Kobold Press and I think their game might indeed very popular but for me personally, it's leaning into the very thing I didn't care for in 5e. OP characters steamrolling content. The biggest problem they will face though isn't people like me. It's the fact that when Paizo created Pathfinder, WoTc had radically changed from 3.5 to 4e...totally not the same game. But with ToV, WotC is still making a 5e "compatible" game. How many people will be willing to shell out for all new books for a very similar game remains to be seen.

    • @MrTarrasque
      @MrTarrasque  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well they sold a million worth of books on their Kickstarter 😅

    • @ToddPutnam-uy8ny
      @ToddPutnam-uy8ny ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrTarrasque They did! But Shadowdark sold 1.3M worth of books on their kickstarter and the Arcane Library (makers of Shadowdark) were basically unknown compared to Kobold Press. I wish Kobold Press nothing but success. I just suspect they are unlikely to secure even as much success as Pathfinder got when they launched back in the day.

    • @GMToolbox
      @GMToolbox ปีที่แล้ว

      2 things I would say to this. 1st, KP is also rebalancing monsters and encounters. So even though the PCs are more powerful, the content they face will be relatively more challenging then the content a 5e PC faced with 5e monsters. 2nd, WOTC is also making people shell out money for all new books. So its a question of what system people like better, WOTC's One DND or KP's ToV. Personally I like the direction of TOV better but many people just don't look outside of official material so WOTC will be the route they go. Its unfortunate because 3rd party publishers consistently put out better and higher quality products.

    • @Alex-cq1zr
      @Alex-cq1zr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It also should be noted that 4e was still very popular, just not ultra profitable as buisiness has hoped, even tho it was profitable.
      I even heard that it sold better than pathfinder 1e, but appeared to be in opposite situation due to older fans very loudly hating it.
      Problem of current new dnd edition is that it had wotc's bad actions behind it.
      Thing is that it will likely still sell well, cause it's wotc... unless the ogl stunt was huge enough to break dnd hegemony.
      So, ig that tales will be popular, but, unless wotc really screwed up this time, not as popular as onednd.
