I'm a retired 42 year veteran contractor. Yes folks.... this is how it's done. He's adapted well to the newer Kerdi/Schulter systems. No more Hardiboard and Laticrete.... Well done sir!
Shluder and kerdi are petroleum products… soap and shampoo are dispersants that breakdown shluder and kerdi products and make them leak. Dura rock or wire mesh old school is the only time tested ways to do it.
I remodeled three completely at my homes over the years. On average it took me 2 months. One took a year since I was severely injured on the job. But having a spare totally helps. They all started out basic and then I expand my plans and go all out. The wife would bitch, but always helped out. Skylights, heated floors, body sprayers, large glass, just to name a few things. A year later, when it was extremely cold I shut off the floor heat and she asked why is the floor so cold. That’s when I said gotcha, she laughed and understood why things take so long.😂 I truly love the speed of your progress and the channel! The only way to get what I want is to do it myself, due to costs and quality of remodelers in my area.
You joke, my ex wife literally said this to me when I was remodeling our kitchen. She said to me, it only takes them an hour on TV! I strated to laugh then I looked at her and realized she was serious! Upset angry look on her face with hands on hips! I told her to leave!
Finally someone who knows the right way to do tile and grout. Go watch that handyman dude that gloat’s all the money he makes do his tile and grout he was struggling but making it seem like he knew what he was doing. Loved watching him getting all that grout off it was classic I bet it was still hazed when he left 😂 Maybe he will learn to clean the grout as you go then you just have 1 final clean at the end not several 👌
Great work. Going forward I would put backing in for some grab handles . You never know when or if they will need it. But it might give the customer a piece of mind. A 2x6 or some 3/4 ply at 3ft high is quick and easy to install.
Yap, been doing that for the last year or so on my bathroom renovations. Backings also for future ADA shower seats, I have contractor friends that have 2 x 12 remnants that I get them free. This job that I just finished today gave me a headache, I had the backings installed for towel bars, level mounted, and then he goes and changed his mind to go for a fancy towel holder that have 3 bars that swivel 180 degrees, upright mounted, LOL.
I just found your site looking for a sequence or steps for remodeling a bathroom. I cannot believe the layers installed on the shower floor! I am guessing it is a better water seal by overhanging the inside of the alcove rather than bringing the tile level to the inside walls eliminating seeing the cut edge. see 6:28 time stamp EDIT: I originally found your 99 step video. 👍
Hey! I've messaged you elsewhere, but if you drill into the waterproofing, aren't you compromising it? I want to use the Kerdi-Curb, but can't think how I'd be able to without compromising the integrity of the waterproofing...Do you just put caulk in the screw-holes?
I have a walk in shower in my house I lived in for about a year and it’s clean but constantly smells moldy and was thinking water is getting under the same small tiles on the floor like in this video. How would you prevent this from happening? Is it wise to to use a solid pan verses tile. Or do you need to seal the grout every so often? We are wanting to tear it up make sure there’s no water damage and mold just curious what to do for the remodel.
Might have missed it, but at 4:15, before you start laying down the floor tiles, how did you make sure there was a slight slope down, towards the drain? Isn't this necessary to avoid spots of sitting water? It looks great overall, but I wish we would get past this latest trend of those small square tile sheet. It's been 20 years of renovating with those ugly little squares!
over the heating element yes, don't do that shit. You are supposed to skim over it with thinset. To install it you must use unmodified thinset tho. The topcoat skim doesn't matter. Then again each state does their jobs different. Her in commieformia California this is the way its done here.
Its to encase the radiant heat wiring. Im pretty positive you can pour over that style of underlayment. Its meant for that wiring which in turn is required to have leveling compound be poured over.
Great video and you seem to do great work. Thanks for sharing. Question: how much was the bathroom materials? The Schluter system is nice, however, very costly as compared to alternatives. Just wondering a bit about the pros and cons.
@@oldman9606 I used one on a bathroom remodel at my last house and they are super easy to use, especially for someone like myself with very little experience
Nice idea but thunder isn’t a waterproofing material. I installed one of these systems and said never again. Luckily mine was over slab on grade so if it leaks it won’t cause a ton of damage. It took me just as long to install this system as it does to do it the right way with floated walls/pan that will last 20 years plus without issues. This system will luckily last 5
online and even Home Depot sells there version of those but i have no idea the quality of the materials used tho. The one in this video looks like the ones I've seen that cost over 200 dollars. Well worth the money if you are over 200lbs in weight and not doing flooring as your main trade then they will last you for years. Also Tile shops that do have a tool section might carry them also.
They are called pro knee. You take your leg measurements and they are custom made (or they stock various sizes to fit). Takes the pressure off your knee and distributes it along the whole leg. You can wear them pain free all day. These are over $200.00 now, but worth every penny!
Very nice. I like the tile work. Only thing I don’t understand is why you would not want at least a shallow curb for water retention. Seems to me that this design is asking for water problems outside the shower.
1wheeldrive751: Because it looks cool.....really cool. It is better to look good than to be good, but looking good and being good can be the same thing.
The shower tray is sloped so draining in most cases shouldn't be an issue. However, if the homeowner at some point were to change the shower head to one without a flow restricter, there's a good chance (in all probability) that more water than expected would congregate down there and it wouldn't drain, causing the problems you speak of. Some people need curbless showers due to various things, including disabilities. However, the ones I've seen in those cases usually have 2 drains and are over bigger areas. If water gets out of the immediate shower area, it really isn't a problem because the entire bathroom has the same tile and everything is more sloped.
Everyone is different, I prefer old school. Durock walls taped and waterproofed, 2 layer dry pack base with rubber membrane in between. For a curbless shower, it should start below the rest of the floor to add sufficent drainage angle. I have completed 12 showers (and many surrounds) with no preblems in over 20 years. The Schluter system is more involved with too many steps and too many layers.
Doesn’t look like you hit a stud with the door hinge. Shouldn’t the orange water proof go on the floor first and start up the wall, then the wall over laps it and water will shed.
I met 2 guys few years ago on my tile job and they were doing cinder block walls. IT was a father and son. The son was mid 50s and his dad 81. They both handled the cinder blocks like a young buck. Age has nothing to do with it. How you take care of your body and not having bad genes like myself matters. I was born with a deformed hip and 20 years later into my construction career the other hip went to shit. Still working and now with 2 fucked up hips. Its life.

A remodel without using a level once? There's no fix once everything is installed if there are any issues with that down the line.
kerdi and schulter leak.

Amazing skills. In my 45 years as a contractor I have never seen someone with that many skills of perfection.
I've restored entire cars and trucks, every nut and bolt, but I lack the skillset shown here. Much respect to the trades. 🤙
Totally high skilled guy. Anyone who will buy Hilti tools - people in the trades know- is a deadly serious guy. Nice work!
People like this will be worth gold on the upcoming decades
As soon as I saw the hilti drill, I'm like...this guy is legit. Nice work man!
Man, this guy is good.
Chipmunk time lapse, if only we could work this fast in real life. Excellent work done. Thank you for your videos!
That turned out amazing! Love these time lapse videos of the whole job.
Mad skills & quality work 👍🏻
I AM SCHOCKED!😊
It’s hard to believe that he did all this in 10 minutes!! Now that’s a pro!
In the finest tradition of all builders and plumbers, he wears his trousers at half mast.
And look at that. Some people claim that such bathrooms take two+ weeks to remodel. 10 minutes 11 seconds BRT style. Booom.

Did you pour self Leveler over ditra heat? I've never seen that.
Great video. Interested in the thought process behind putting self leveler on the ditra instead of thin set?
Legend has it, even after all that still leaked down below
Fantastic Job.... Tile setout and alignment good too

of course. Unless the contractor is also a licensed tile distributor and pushes his tile onto the clients then yes they choose.

2:05 that base he is putting down is preformed to have the right angle slope all the way round towards the drain.
wow over the top,,, amen,,,
How far out are you booked? I bet a long way...
Are you supposed to pour leveler over schluter? Thought that was a huge no no???
I’m wondering the same thing, it’s been a while since I’ve attended a Schluter class, didn’t know if they approved this method or not?

I have only one question. Where is the slope to the drain?
It's a Kerdi board shower pan. They are made with a natural slope already. More convenient than a mortar bed.
@ericpalmer2831 that is interesting.

Do not put levelers on top of ditra it will void your warranty. Only exception is if you put wood on top. Information is available on this subject
Ask your Schluter rep about Ardex k1
Up to 1/4” of that leveler is approved!
