John Phillips was inspired to write the song when he and his family went on a trip to New York, and one of his children, who was little, said, "I don't like it here. All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray." He stopped on the spot and wrote that down.

This will ALWAYS go down as one of my favorite songs ever in the history of my life. I can remember being about 7 or 8 maybe, it must have been fall of 1986-87...my dad and I were walking up the street to go to my grandmother's house (it was only about a mile away from our old house)...our house was still within sight of us...and dad and I just started talking about the fall colors etc, this conversation started us singing this song on the walk to grandma's, I mean we were even breaking it down and everything. LOL. I'm 41 now, there are only a few vague memories I have of anything before age 10 or 11, there are somethings I would have no memory of at all if it wasn't for photographic evidence....but this is one of those memories that is hanging on for dear life.

There was a documentary back in the 1990s about John "Papa John" Phillips and the Mamas and the Papas. At one point, he's in a restaurant on his birthday. With him are the interviewer and his daughter Mackenzie Phillips (who is an actress in her own right). He said, "I just wish I had done more. I don't think I made my mark, and that would have been nice."
His daughter told him that he was crazy and that he made a huge mark. When he scoffed at her, she stood up in the middle of the restaurant, asked everyone's pardon, and said, "This is my dad, John Phillips. Back in the 60s he wrote this song and I want to sing it to him now because its his birthday. If you know the words, join in."
And she gets as far as "All the leaves are brown..." before the entire freaking restaurant is singing along. John Phillips is just sitting there, his jaw on the floor, because the idiot really didn't think he was as influential when it came to music as he was.

@@mycolortv1 ... The Mamas and Papas were a group I listened to a lot when I was young. After I married and watched the documentary about them and the parties they had, I kind of lost all respect for Michelle and John. (for the reasons you spoke of) I read Mackenzie's biography and that was it. I remember Mackenzie saying that Mick Jagger was at her house visiting her parents and of course there were the drinks, drugs and rock-n-roll happening. Mackenzie said she was 14 or so and Mick asked her if she wanted to go to bed with him and she did. In her defense she said, "What would you do as a young teenage girl and Mick Jagger asked you if you wanted to go to bed?" A whole different scene, I guess. One I don't understand.

The Golden Age of Music and Television? Are you HIGH? Sure, you can probably make a good argument for the music, but television? Ugh. It was awful. What the hell was on except insipid sitcoms and overacted melodramas posing as westerns. The 1970s perfected the sitcom (thanks in no small part to Norman Lear), and the 1990s gave us Twin Peaks and Seinfeld (the anti-sitcom).

They were in NY. John Philips woke up from his sleep no after having a dream about CA and wrote this song in about 15 mins. John Phillips, the guitarist was married to Michelle, the blond. They had two daughters. One daughter, played the oldest daughter on the original tv sitcom, One Day at a Time. Their other daughter is in the blond with short hair from the 80's group Wilson-Phillips. The other two girls are the daughters of Brian Wilson, the brilliant musician and writer from the Beach Boys. The Phillips and the Wilson's traveled in the same circles in CA, hence their daughters were the same age and hung out together. If you listen to Wilson-Phillips greatest song, Hold On, you will hear the harmonizing they learned from the Mama's and Papa's and the Beach Boys. Incidentally, the blond in Wilson-Phillips wrote Hold On. All three had inherited the their musical talents from all the parents.

This song is on my all time favorite list. Love your review Michelle was originally from CA. She and John were living in NY. It was winter and she was missing CA. Hence the birth of the song. The line about "pretending to pray", supposedly they went into a church to warm up because it was so cold outside.

To learn more about The Mamas and The Papas, I highly recommend the Documentary film "STRAIGHT SHOOTERS: The Story of The Mamas and The Papas" Fascinating, hilarious, terrifying, riveting!
Amazing back stories to the songs and the band...like how Mama Cass brought a bottle of liquid LSD to the U.S. Virgin Islands in order to change John's mind about letting her join the group.
How the American Express Office on said Islands gleefully cut up John's American Express Card while exclaiming "This is IT! THIS is the Card we've been LOOKING FOR!"
And how the group, after living on the Islands for the past 6 months, pooled the little money they had left, took it the Casino, and watch Michelle make pass after pass at the Craps table, winning enough
$ to purchase airline tickets to fly everyone back to NYC, where all the leaves were brown...and the skies were gray.
    But that's another story...!
    ✌🍁✌

This reminds me of the Dead Milkmen song "Punk Rock Girl"
"We went to the Philly Pizza Company and ordered some hot tea
The waitress said "well no, we only have it iced"
So we jumped up on the table and shouted anarchy
And someone played a Beach Boys song on the jukebox
    It it was California Dreamin'
    So we started screamin'
    On such a winter's day"

Their harmonies are amazing. You don't hear that very much in today's music. We live in So. Cal. My son went to college in Kansas. On about the 5th day it snowed, he told me he really understood this song and wanted to come home. They were Californians that moved to New York and was missing California. Do listen to more of their music. The melodies and harmonies are special.

Mama Cass had the voice.... and the moves!!! Michelle did that stiff "what do I do" sway thing but Cass... she was an awesome performer and was so overlooked... until she died and the jokes about her choking to death on a ham sandwich started up. She died of a heart attack and a sandwich just happened to be in the room. You should check out her and John Denver doing "Leaving on a jet plane"... or her, Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul and Mary) and Joni Mitchell doing "I shall be released.".... both great performances that a lot of people aren't aware of.

I'd call the tune "slice of life". That's an art term meaning showing a limited scene, maybe with only one specific action, usually as a play or short story. Works well as a song form, too. "This is who we are and how we feel right now" can kinda define 'slice of life'.

I doesn't rain as much in California as many people here would like it to, especially in recent years with the drought and all.

They were folks who were parts of other Groups before coming together as a Band. The Song was written by John Phillips & His Former Second Wife Michelle. It went to Number One and they did all of the Rock Shows back in the day. You may have heard it in Forrest Gump and The Beach Boys did their version and Michelle Phillips, John and Spanky McFarland were in The Video. In Future Years John & Michelle's Daughter Chynna would be 1 Third Of Wilson Phillips. Her former Bandmates were Wendy & Carnie Wilson whose Father Brian was the Co Founder of The Beach Boys.
