    Madonna is versatile, but she is also evolving. It took about 15 years to come to this musical highlight. If you follow her art in chronological order, it makes more sense, where she's been through in life and artistically. After all the sexual, religious and controversial things she's done, this was a huge switch, but perfectly fitting and ahead of time. Madonna is an amazing songwriter, which should be more appreciated. This song is in my top three of best Madonna songs. The 'Ray of Light' album, which this is from, might be her best.

    Her "'Ray of Light" album depicts her spiritual/philosophical journey after the birth of her child. I would argue that her previous albums explored desire (sexual and emotional) much more and that this album shows growth away from 'base' desires to a more self-reflexive and spiritual self. This album is a masterpiece and her most highly acclaimed. The archetype/energy she embodied in the album is that of a wise and maternal goddess.

    This song, along with the album Ray Of Light came out in 1998, it was inspired after the birth of her first daughter. So her sound evolved into this spiritual approach and her influence with Kabballah. It was a unique new sound she brought into her repertoire, and just like you, people were amazed by this, even the non-Madonna fan back in '98 when they discovered this.

    One of my favorite Madonna songs. Underrated in my opinion.

    • @jluebs
      @jluebs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Under-rated how, exactly? What chart or "rating" is out there that that make you think thinks this is "under-rated?" It got to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, which was based on radio airplay/popularity at the time. If it had hit #1 would that have made it sufficiently "rated"? Or would you still have said this was "under-rated"? I think most Madonna fans think this is one of her best songs so it's not "under-rated."

    • @MilosDaddy
      @MilosDaddy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jluebs Nit=picking bullshit. I meant the song doesn't get as much respect, generally speaking, as some of her other songs.

      Underrated to me in the sense that it is my 2nd favorite Madonna song after Like A Prayer. Most people probably could not say that. I think it's the combination again of her and producer Patrick Leonard who worked on this song and Like A Prayer.

    been a lifelong fan since the beginning of her career when I was a little kid but this is my all time favorite era from her. She was just creatively at her peak having just had her first child. The production is still perfection that has aged so well and her vocals perfectly produced over it. To your question she does actually have a big hand in producing. She was famously called a bitch at the begining of her career for taking herself so seriously and wanting control over her message and her image and her performances which was still unheard of for a female pop act. It's all her. People love to discredit her because she doesn't have the big Whitney or Mariah kind of voice, but I think what she has done in her career takes far more creativity and work than the singers who were simply born with an incredible voice to sing songs someone else writes and produces.

    M said she was inspired by the movie "the sheltering sky", it was about a couple that went to the desert in Africa to try to resolve marriage problems, if you look at the poster of the film you can clearly see the first scene where M floats in the desert. Other inspirations came from Martha Graham who M met in NY at the dancing school and the ballet piece was called "Lamentation". The interpretation of the 3 Madonnas is likely to be the triple goddess Hecate, a sacred female in Greek mythology, and she was accompanied by barking dogs.... the 3 figures represent the virgin, the mother and the crone... there is a lot more about this video and there are analysis that can be found online....

      Interesting. For some reason, the image of Madonna against the background of the desert in the video has always reminded me of Joni Mitchell's haunting album jacket to 'HEJIRA.' (Also, 'Hejira' means journey.)

    ✨❤️‍🔥✨ Madonna is a co-writer and producer on most of her music, and although she’s not a composer in the sense of a Prince, people forget or don’t research, or honestly assume she’s just a pop singer because she’s a female artist, and people lovvvvvve to diminish the skill and talent of powerful women. Especially when they’re also sexual. There are many songs in her catalogue she wrote entirely herself, then brought to musicians/collaborators to build the instrumentation, and many of her greatest songs are written with just one collaborator, with her either writing poetry and hooks to music in her head and singing it in the studio to begin writing the melody with the composer, or the collaborator/composer presents music in the mood she’s interested in and she writes the lyrics and vocal melody over that. In many cases, according to her genius collaborators like Patrick Leonard, Stephen Bray and William Orbit, she wrote the lyrics, vocal melody and hooks to many of her greatest songs within a few hours.

    The reason for this album being so spiritual and sincere was exactly when Madonna started to study Caballa, around that time is when she had her first child ( watch My substitute for love video and song, it summarised so well how she felt about money, fame and her new way of seeing things ) around this time is when she married guy Ritchie and got pregnant of his son, she was turning 40 which it is a change of pace ( I've been there )

    Madonna is the reason so many women are taken seriously in the music industry today. There were plenty of female artists before her that were paving the way but when Madonna broke through and found a global audience like never before, the industry had to pay attention. Her work ethic, ability to absorb influences and her desire to shape-shift and evolve her sound is so impressive for an artist at her level of success. To me “frozen” represents the antithesis of what Madonna represents, she has never been frozen in her artistry / vision but always willing to open herself to new sound, new ideas, new song writing partners, and new audiences. That’s incredibly risky once you’ve made it to the top. More often artists settle into a predictability or comfort factor to do what they know, sounds familiar and have already done. Madonna’s artistic vision remains unpredictable even into her 4th decade. Although plenty of fantastic female performers have risen over the past few decades, there will never be another visionary risk taker at this level on a global scale.

    I have the heart of an empath. It doesn't matter how hard I try to close my heart, it remains eternally open and I bleed for other people's pain. I was told once, it's the blessing and the curse of being an empath. We just can't freeze our hearts I guess. I have wished a million times.

    Love this era especially from Madonna , this album is fantastic.. maybe her most successful in the 90s 00s.
    William Orbit was huge at the time. He had big production on the album.

    Hahhaha! You! So perfect!
    I'm a Madonna fan since 1983. I thought about doing psychology, but it was not enough for me, so I did international relations and social psychology (now have a Ph.D in Politics). Almost all of my childhood friends are psychologists now, the others politics or education/human resources.
    And I did astrology, started in Italy when I was over there. What you said about archetypes is the thing that I've always thought that astrology was about , since the early 1990s. I've blown away psychologists and married couples that I've never met before just by reading their charts in parties that I attended. (Mind you, I'm a Scorpio with just Saturn and Chiron above the horizontal level.)
    Nevertheless, this is irrelevant. What I wanted to say is this:
    You have a worldwide audience of Madonna fans and your analysis of her has so far been the best I've heard. Why would you quit on that? Madonna is the source of a lot of pop culture... Just saying.

    In this video she is representing the ancient greek Goddess of witches HECATE.
    She is a triple & one Goddess, she dress in black, her animals are crows and black dogs,
    and also have the Keys of the Other World ("you are the key" she sings).
    So, she says "open your heart" and "give yourself to me" so you can be unfrozen ...

    Madonna is very spiritually inclined, including astrology (she's a leo I believe), catholicism and ancient judaism. She's always been very driven and has a fire within that she doesn't know where it comes from. I think she's both incredibly strict (almost masochistically so) and seems to have a powerful desire for openness, transparency and freedom. Her lyrics are always very to the point, direct. She would revisit the theme of "Frozen" much later in the song "Inside Out" (2015), another plea for the other to let his "walls crumble to the ground". Interestingly, a famous Italian-American scholar, who is also of Italian heritage, was an early fan of Madonna and also very much into astrology and archetypes, Camille Paglia is her name, who saw in Madonna a kind of sexual primal force of life and nature, mixed with the drastic and controlled ambition associated with the desire for success and accomplishment.

      Well, Paglia may have done some good work on Madonna early on, but Madonna called her out during her (M's) Billboard Woman of the Year speech. And rightly so; Paglia is an anti-feminist hack and a Madonna wannabe in academia, imv.

    • @jaranowska
      @jaranowska 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@moonstone1159 Paglia never criticised Madonna for "objectifying herself sexually", as Madonna stupidly claimed in that maudlin speech. She was instead celebrating her sexualised persona, contrary to parochial feminists of the time, who indeed were criticising Madonna for that very (stupid) reason. Paglia criticised Madonna later on for other reasons and she's no hack. She's a brilliant cultural and art commentator.

    • @moonstone1159
      @moonstone1159 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaranowska I never said she criticizedd M for her "sexualized persona." I will give Paglia credit on a Cultural Studies persepective for looking into Madonna, but like many self-described "feminists" on the right, Paglia's attitude toward feminism amounts to the undermining of women and the propping up of a certain type of patriarchy. She is a hack, imv. In fact, she's not taken seriously by feminists scholars, in general. Male and right wing scholars, on the other hand, really like her, so she does have her fans. Still, I was quite surprised Madonna criticized Paglia directly in that speech -- which, although well-deserved on some level (!) -- was not a good look for Madonna in the long run because it looked a bit petty or vengeful. I think she coud have said what she had to say without singling anyone out. In any case, we just have to disagree on Paglia and her work.

    • @jaranowska
      @jaranowska 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@moonstone1159 Madonna should have singled out people of Gloria Steinem's creed, or the crazy feminists who literally tore up copies of her Sex book at a feminist convention in 1992 as part of a ridiculous ritual of purification. Paglia is for the legalization of drugs and sex work, and is a Bernie Sanders supporter, and you think she's right-wing? She's an intellectual first, a feminist second. That's her own words. No one has any authority to claim a person is or is not a feminist. One can claim that for oneself (or reject it). But yes, we can certainly agree to disagree.

    • @moonstone1159
      @moonstone1159 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaranowska I stand by my all of comments and assessments of Paglia. She's a hack. I'm aware of her voting proclivities.
