Annie Lennox, nothing more needs to be said. What a spectacular woman! My uncle, who was a very famous singer, told me Annie Lennox was one of three people in his life he loved, not romantically, but just loved for who she was. Look at the interaction between them during their duet singing “Under Pressure.”

One of things about this video, other than her voice, the melody, is how beautiful she is. The whole video is her basically just standing/sitting there and moving slightly and you can't take your eyes off her. Her presence is powerful and Her face is soooo expressive if she did anything else it would detract from the song. Very old soul there. That voice will float deep right into your soul.

I've always felt that with Annie, too. She has incredible control over her voice, but it's not done for the sake of doing it. The acrobatics are not there to hide anything lacking in the song. The smallest question in English is "Why?" but by extending the word to stretch across three bars and fill the entire chorus with just one word, she's showing the contrast with the "littleness" of the word and the "massiveness" of the question.

I saw Annie Lennox perform this song in the Tampa Theater a historic landmark built in the 1920's. It's an ornately decorated movie theater that seats just 1252 people, so just imagine how personal and intimate this concert was being ninth row center stage. Annie was getting ready to go on tour and was perfecting her act (no need to). Her singing was sublime! It was by far the best concert I have ever been too.

    • @zivo24

Eva’s story needs to be made into a movie but the actress would have to lip sync cause it would make no sense to have any voice but hers singing in it. She was surreally talented. Her version of Billie Holiday’s “You’ve changed” is incredible.
It’s crazy that she’s so posthumously famous in the UK, Australia, etc., but barely known here in the US where’s she’s from.

For more recent female vocalists who can perform without auto-tune I would recommend "Fear" by Sarah McLachlan and either "Fight Like A Girl" or "Misery Loves Company" by Emilie Autumn. Emilie is a little edgier, but she brings it with both her vocals and the violin. "Untouched" by The Veronicas is also fun.

Yes, definitely check out Tori Amos. Winter is quite accessible, a glimpse of her „witch energy“ you might also find in Pretty good year, which otherwise focuses on her voice and piano skills… its hard to pick the right starting point with her music, since she has so many great songs and albums. I remember hearing Pretty good year in the 90ies and couldnt believe that pop music can sound like this. Btw love Florence, but also singers like Annie Lennox or Marie from Roxette…

Sweet dreams are made of this
    Who am I to disagree
    I’ve traveled the world
    And the seven seas
    Everybody’s looking for something
THAT was Annie as the lead singer of the legendary duo, Eurythmics.
‘Why’ was her first single released when she went solo.
She’s a classically trained flutist and pianist who dropped out of university weeks before she was to graduate because she knew that wasn’t her destiny. She has an Oscar for best song. She’s a huge human rights activist.
    She’s an icon.

One of the best voices in the business. If you want to hear what she's capable of live, I HIGHLY recommend 'Eurythmics Live 1983-1989'. It's basically a greatest hits album, and the entire album (22 songs) is on the official Eurythmics youtube channel. IMO it's better than all of their studio work. One of the best songs on it also has a video: 'Eurythmics - Miracle Of Love (Live in Sydney 1987)'.
Her solo career is also great: 'Little Bird', 'No More I Love You's', 'Into The West', 'Precious',...

It's pronounced Len - nix with the emphasis on the first syllable. Great emotional song that I can relate to.
To me the song is about the dissolution of a relationship and she's expressing her feelings about how she feels and her side of the story. Good reaction.

On the female vibe, I think you'd probably dig some Trespassers William, with Anna-Lynne Williams on vocals. Check out their album Different Stars.

Have you noticed her resemblance to David Bowie? Both physical and in talent.

I grew up in the 90’s and I love a lot of new female artists, but I have to say that nothing that’s being done today hasn’t been done before and better by women like Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith, Joan Baez, Grace Jones, and so on and so on.
