    SPOILER ALERT
    At the beginning of the film, there's a subtle hint about the fact that Lily herself is making up the whole persecution. You know, when she steals the red lipstick from the previous dancer and starts using it, then, she finds insults on her mirror painted with the exact same red colour, meaning that, although she's the one using it, she also judges herself as a bitch for doing so.
    God, this films as som many interpretations...

      A therapist friend of mine told me once that it is completely normal to do so and that it ususally helps do so for your mental health. Because if you feel really sad and depressed and want to wear dark colors but you force yourself to wear light or colouful things it can completely f*ck up your brain and make it even worse. So they told me to embrace it when something like this happens ^^

      I realized that I do this subconsciously. When I'm in a certain mood I would gravitate towards a particular color or style while I'm shopping. I figured out what these colors personally mean to me in relation to my emotions. It helped me become more self aware.

      @@kuppeycake6457 Because your brain will have the chemicals that make it sad, for example, but it will see the bright colors (if you associate bright colors with "happy" feelings, some people don't, for some people black is still a happy color it depends on your perception of the colors if you have one) and think "I have to be happy but I'm not Oh gosh darn it!"
      But like I said above some people don't associate colors with special moods or feelings. And of course, for some people, it helps them feel better and "influence" their brains in the way they want to feel.
      So don't worry it is not going to necessarily F up your brain, it's just if you really feel like dressing in a certain color your brain might "feel" it as soothing.

    I watched Black Swan when it was released years ago and I remember enjoying it even though I was confused. I had no idea the film was a representation of Freud's psychoanalytic theory! Your costume and styling analysis of the Nina's superego, ego and id throughout the movie is spot on. This definitely calls for a rewatch! Bonus: I love the Grey Color Psychology notes in the middle of the video. "Because of its range, grey is connected to intellect and compromise. It's very diplomatic in nature, negotiating all the distance between black and white. It's not a color of extremes, but rather of middle ground." All coming of age stories follow the same pattern. I personally see them through an Jungian lens, instead of Freudian...
      It’s a feminine perspective on the same process that we saw in Fight Club, only that there there were two males:
      Edward Norton/ Nina and Brad Pitt/Lily, while Helena Bonham Carter would be Thomas in Black Swan. Same structure.

    This movie kills me- it came out while I was doing my English lit degree and I wrote a lot about the didactic moral functions of fairy tales and this was perfect for it. It’s a fascinating exploration of femininity, self identity, existing as a woman against other women and in society- duality and or dichotomy it hits every note you could want from the way the actors and backgrounds are styled- the sound design, psychologically it’s fascinating from the actors portrayals too. And I like the ambiguous ending, I’ll be honest all these years later... I’m not even sure how I read it. I’ve read it hopeful and I’ve read it bleak, I’ve read it as fantasy and reality and there always seems to be about as much weight and truth to one as the next. And aside from how masterful everything else is, I think it’s uncertainty is what makes that movie so great. It’s heavy handed with symbolism and imagery but it doesn’t give you any real answers in the end and leaves you to think on it. I think there’s a reason it’s probably the directors most acclaimed film.

    • @mgdkns6678
      @mgdkns6678 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In my opinion Nina at the end accomplishes her goal and transcends her former frozen in childhood state.
      As you’ve said, the movie is relying heavily on metaphor and symbolism to show Nina’s transition from childhood to adulthood, her being an arrested development case, obviously.
      Therefore, many scenes are not to be taken literally, but in terms of metaphor to show her mental and emotional state. She is not literally growing black feathers- that is a symbol used to represent her inner dark, repressed psyche coming to surface, with an unstoppable force. Her mother clips her nails, symbolizing the overbearing mother who clips and blocks any growth her daughter could have. Nina doesn’t break her legs in a literal sense, it is again, another symbol meant to show how her way of navigating through life ( we move in life through our legs, right?) is broken and won’t work anymore. Nina doesn’t have sex with Lily, she only unites with her (repressed) sexuality , which she projected on Lily, Lily being a sexually free woman ( she represents the flow to Nina’s control, we are told), and in the end we see she doesn’t kill literally Lilly, what she killed was her projection of her own inner black swan on Lily. Only once with withdraw our projections can we start to integrate those aspects into ourselves, which Nina does.
      All Nina’s “madness” is a metaphor, in my opinion, to show her real self, her actualized womanhood ( the black swan) , coming to surface, in a violent way, but that’s because Nina projected evil onto it through her desperate clinging to innocence and being a “good sweet girl”( mommy’s girl). Because all the movie relies on symbols and is not to be taken literally , I think the ending is to be seen and interpreted through the same symbolic, not literal, way.
      In the end we are told “I felt it, I was perfect”, meaning the transcendence Thomas talked about in the beginning was achieved by her and she successfully integrated her repressed side, which was womanhood ( the black swan) , with all it’s complexities and darkness and sexuality, all part of the adult life, which for such a long time she repressed. Finally, “through death she found liberation” as the white swan’s story goes. Meaning the white swan, Nina’s good girl, innocent side dies, and the new self, a woman, not a child, takes its place.
      What died was Nina’s former self, who could no longer live. In order to become adults we must give up childhood, and in that sense, the child we once were must die, with all it’s naivety , innocence and “pinkness”. Natalie Portman mentioned in an interview how the blood at the end is meant to symbolize period, therefore another symbol of coming into womanhood.
      The ending is left ambiguous purposefully, because it is the type of mind fuck movie, and those are best left that way. Exactly like in Inception, another inner journey story, told through metaphors and symbols, the only way through which you can express the mysterious nature of our psyches and inner realities.
      It is my absolute favorite movie of all times and it’s an absolute masterpiece!

    I remember hearing that the blood at the end was also made to look like she got her period... purposefully, so that this transition she went through, now she is finally a woman and no longer the scared little mama's girl. she transformed, but to what cost? did she actually kill herself, will she be saved? ... All SHE cared about at the end was that she did the black swan perfectly. I think i remember initially thinking she died, but now, i think she just fully flipped, into her mental illness + became her fullest self- bad sides and all. The cost of that was just she lost her sanity. maybe i'm wrong. but the movie is so good.

    • @mgdkns6678
      @mgdkns6678 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      I don’t think the ending is to be taken literally, because all movie is very metaphorical and relies heavily on symbolism.
      I think the ending symbolized her old self dying , her innocence dying and her merging with her highest potential, and in order to get to that she had to go through her repressed dark side. A lot of things don’t literally happen in the movie, they are just meant to symbolize her inner process and transition: she doesn’t literally grow feathers, she doesn’t break her legs, she doesn’t have sex with Lily, etc. They are symbols and visual imagery used to express her inner process, feelings, psychic projections, etc. That’s why I personally don’t think she dies at the end, only her outdated previous self is transcended, which was the goal in the first place. As she said “ I felt it, I was perfect”. She accomplished her goal and the transition has been made.
      We see the exact same process shown in Fight Club, only there we have two make protagonists- Ed Norton/ Nina, and his antagonist Brad Pitt/ Lily. In the end it is revealed that it was all happening in his head, and his “insanity” is also not meant to be taken literal. It is again, a symbol.

    Do Daenerys Targaryen! Her outfits start off pale and flowy while she's an innocent little girl then start getting more saturated and incorporating dragon symbolism as she becomes the mad queen.

    • @BlairWaldorf2013
      @BlairWaldorf2013 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      I don’t think the outfits have anything to do with her becoming ‘the mad queen’ as for starters the show doesn’t do a good job getting to that end point.
      But I do think the outfits represent for the last remaining women of power in the show is that they have to start off pretending to be womanly (the clothing is a signal of their station in life-only an object to be trading off its beauty).
      As the women Cersei, Daenerys, & Sansa grow in power their clothing grows in harshness of lines, as was mentioned in this video early on. It is a signal to the audience that the woman is taking on what society perceives as manly qualities (anger, authority, confidence).
      The more power Dany gains the less she has to use her body to be influential. Until at the very end the only parts of her body we see that indicate she is in fact a woman is her face and hair.
      But her hair is braided as an indicator of her NEVER losing a battle in the Dothraki tradition. So even that changes to a masculine indicator of power by the time she comes to that mess of an ending she was given.

    • @nordette
      @nordette 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      They costume director said the more battles she won the more braids they would put in daenerys hair. It becomes more and more elaborate as the seasons go on. I thought that was a cool touch, a shout out to her adopted darthraki culture

    • @hkc8544
      @hkc8544 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      BlairWaldorf2013 No, because Daenerys was already exhibiting signs of “madness” way back when she was still wearing white flowy dresses (when she fed one of the former Masters to her dragons without conclusively determining his guilt, all to show off her power). Throughout the entire show, she’s always killed people she deemed evil and/or inconvenienced her. Way back in season 2 she threatened that if Qarth turned her away she would come back “with fire and blood”. She burned the Dothraki’s temple down, for fuck’s sake. She destroyed their culture, and they bowed to her for it like she wasn’t a murderous colonizer. And somehow in the final season everyone is surprised that she did the exact thing she always said she would?

      The reason why Daenerys Targaryen wears a lot of blue is because the Khalasar that Khal drogo belonged to had the colour blue to identify themselves, and it's different for every Khalasar.
      Also I think during the later seasons she sheds off the blue and starts wearing her house colour more and more to transform herself into the dragon she would be

    I'm sorry! but that opening costume is a classical tutu, not a romantic tutu. romantic tutus are more like what you'd see in Giselle, the sort of calf length, tulle tutus. classical tutus are also known as pancake tutus (which makes sense when you see them). not to be that girl but romantic and classical tutus are two wholeee seperate things and are used for two completely different eras, styles, and aesthetics within ballet performance. other than that, fantastic and very interesting analysis!!
    edit: i realised when i said chiffon i meant tulle, the word completely got mixed up when i wrote this hahaha

      Thank you so much for the correction/explanation! I always found costuming for ballet so beautiful. I wish I could go back and edit to do it justice haha. I appreciate the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed 🖤

    • @keiragreen9876
      @keiragreen9876 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CleverAndChic of course! there's a lot of misinformation around ballet/dance in general so i like to be able to correct people from the point of view of a dancer. one of my favourite things about being a dancer (especially for ballet) is the pretty costumes we get to wear for shows and concerts! you should have a look at some of the costumes from The Australian Ballet 'The Sleeping Beauty', it's one of my favourites in terms of the detailing on the costumes. it was a genuinely fascinating video to watch, not even the sort of thing most people would notice but costuming is so so significant and your analysis was super interesting! genuinely really enjoyed watching ❤️

    I always kinda wanted to watch this film but I was afraid because I am very sensitive when it comes to scary movies. I’m 19 now, do you guys think I can take it? Or is it like a horror movie? Great video btw.

    • @SoWhosGae
      @SoWhosGae 4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Watch it. It's kind of a hard psychological and dark movie but it's not "horror" per se, so you should be fine. (A tiny bit of uncomfortable body transformation though.)

    • @CleverAndChic
      @CleverAndChic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Thank you! It's a psychological thriller/drama, but I kept out the harsher hallucinations since I didn't want to show that in case it was too disturbing. So it's not a horror film, but has horror elements

    • @abilea4081
      @abilea4081 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      It's more disturbing than traditionally scary like it messes with your emotions so if you're worried about that maybe don't watch it but otherwise if you're worried about it being like a scary movie don't be it's really great
