  • Ever since the Lumix S5ii was announced, I was super excited to try the Real Time LUT feature for photography. Here is a real-world photowalk where I challenge myself to only use Real Time LUT - zero editing!
    ★ Presets used in this video (all compatible with Real Time LUT as of 2024!)
    "Streetwise" is a preset from my "City Escape" preset pack, which also includes the "Everything" Preset as a free bonus
    My "Black Frost" preset is available in my black and white pack. All presets can be found here: www.microfournerds.com/lightr...
    ----
    📸 LUT converting tools:
    to convert a Lightroom preset to a .CUBE file you can use LUT Generator, free for both Mac and PC. I've used this for years. hashtag not sponsored: generator.iwltbap.com
    if needed, you can then convert your .CUBE file to a .VLT file for free here: cameramanben.github.io/LUTCal...

    For me, as a jpeg (90% of the time) shooter, I would be interested in seeing a comparison between a Lut enhanced raw image and a straight out of camera (SOOC) jpeg of the same subject/same exposure triangle settings image. As a strictly hobbyist photog, I find editing my raw images a bit too much of a slog for the minimal improvement gained in my editing effort and current level of editing skills. I tend to attempt to adjust my jpeg settings in camera before the shutter release and am quite pleased with the results that I achieve. The LUT preset feature, to me, seems like coming full circle back to a 'prebaked image' similar to shooting jpeg to reduce the slog of editing. In the end you are setting your personalized preset to a variety of images that is similar to a jpeg image where the photog has taken the time to adjust in camera image settings to be applied to the jpeg image. Most of my archived raw images are completely unedited only my much fewer 'important to me' raw files have been edited. I really enjoy your content, Emily.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I see what you mean! You could keep a “safe” jpeg in two ways:
      If you didn’t like the applied LUT you could convert the unedited RAW version to JPEG in a few clicks in-camera, in the Raw Processing section. Or even apply a better LUT at that point.
      The other way would be to shoot just JPEG, and toy around with adding the LUTs in-camera after shooting. But that definitely adds an extra step!

    • @silverlightphotoco
      @silverlightphotoco ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like your comments, and while I have to look into this more, there still may be some advantages to shooting JPEG, because you can adjust the "Sharpness" and "Noise Reduction" which, while a lot of people like to put it off for Post-Production, I think it can help reduce the "digital" look of the shots with CERTAIN lenses (because they are too sharp for certain sensors). I've built a website with what I call "lens-sensor specific" settings due to this.😃

    WANT! This camera seems to have everything I like from the m43 Panasonic (and some even from Olympus like that crown dial around the shutter). How is the IBIS though? Does it perform as good as G9 for photography? How about the grip? I don't have big hands, but my pinky is always on its own on my A7 III grip. I just can't make peace with the Sony, so this pany is on the table if it comes close to what the G9 could do.

    • @MicroFourNerds

      I’m in the middle of testing the ibis against the gh6, but the s5ii ibis is delightful so far really solid. And I do quite a lot of handheld photography so it’s been really solid for that.
      I have tiny hands so I might not be the best judge but it fits my hands well. Maybe in the coming weeks you could head to a local camera shop and try one in person to see how it feels.
      I’ve been really impressed so far with the s5ii for photography.

    Hey, Lovely video... What would be the difference between real time LUT (for photos) and Nikon's Picture Control ? I want to go back to Lumix but I am still learning more and more. Your channel is amazing!

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So I’m just having a read up, and it looks like Nikon’s Picture control is more of a way to emulate certain film stocks, similar to the Fuji Recipes. With Real Time LUT you aren’t limited to film emulation, because a LUT gives you complete control over all the colour values, highlight, shadow and contrast.
      What it doesn’t have is digital noise or grain reproduction, as you can’t add that into a LUT file.
      There are of course pros and cons to both but for me personally Real Time LUT is much more versatile and will allow me to convert any of my photo presets, not just film emulation.
      Hope that helps!

    • @PhotoVideoTechOz
      @PhotoVideoTechOz ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @MicroFourNerds

      For portraits, I think the Radiating Beauty pack would be great - it’s designed for people specifically. “White and airy” and “moody portrait” (in that pack) are some of my faves and work great with Real Time LUT.
      The main preset in this video was “streetwise” from the City Escape pack, which is one of my faves for street photography at the moment.

    Thanks for the helpful video! When you say you needed to adjust white balance occasionally, did you switch to a completely manual setting (like daylight or tungsten) or did you keep it on auto WB and just make fine adjustments to the color? I'm curious about this since I usually just shoot RAW and edit in post but I am usually fine with straight un-LUT-ed jpg out of the camera. I do sometime use other photo color presets that come on the G9 (like vivid, scenery, etc). I do notice that when shooting in those preset modes, the RAW has that adjustment too.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Auto was fine for most of the time, and in daylight auto would be absolutely great. Some of the night time shots it was just a matter of cooling the temperature down in white balance settings so it looked more true to life. The vast majority of the time it was super simple and auto was fine 😊

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! It really depends on which preset you’re using, basically, however you’d need to correct it in Lightroom, you replicate in-camera. So sometimes you’d make an image a bit warmer in editing or cooler if shot at night for instance.
      But the vast majority of the time standard white balance is totally fine 😊
      AWBc is very similar to AWB, it just reduces red hues under warmer/incandescent light - so that would be ideal to be honest if shooting at night.
      (And AWBw does the opposite and gives you a warmer/redder image in man-made lighting situations)

    Does this work on the original S5? I've just ordered it with the kit lens, 50mm, and 85mm for £1599, as my first full frame and only shoot badly composed jpegs on m4/3 and aps-c so far. But I know i like the panasonic menus and ergonomic so wanted to buy a panny.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not currently, it may come with firmware but I don’t know how processor heavy it is, so might not be doable with the S5. I hope it does tho!

    Hi! I have the S5 ii, but it doesn’t allows me to install the LUTs that i downloaded from panasonic.

  • @thomashill5768

    Can you apply these LUTs to RAW files AFTER the shot has been taken? I shoot Fuji where you can create your own LUTs (recipes) but they can only be applied before you start shooting. As someone who does a lot of in-camera editing this is a huge ballache...

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can! In the RAW processing section, in camera, you can choose any of your 10 saved LUTs as well as tweak contrast etc then export it as a jpeg in camera

      I think you can still apply recipe into raw in editing. At least it looks like this when I edit my Fuji raw files in dxo photolab 5. there is an option to apply rendering from recipe.

    I don't use Lightroom and don't intend on starting. If I buy your presets, can I export them directly onto my S5ii? What format do presets usually come in?

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you can! Most presets come with just the Lightroom files so youd need to convert them yourself (which requires Lightroom). My main packs come with the CUBE and VLT files included. The .VLT files are the LUT files for Real Time LUT, no lightroom required 😊 just stick them on your SD card and they'll work.
      ("Radiating Beauty" is great for skintones, "Chasing Advenute" is great for landscapes and "City Escape" pack is my fave and designed for street and travel photography)

    There is something about real time lut Im not sure about, if you do bake the lut into your video footage, would you lose all dynamic range info? You would not be able to recover lights and shadows?

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes you really have to nail the video in-camera for this to work well. Ideal for a studio environment that never changes. Too risky for unpredictable scenarios in my opinion. For photo it's amazing because even if the jpeg is not good the raw file is there as a backup

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So if you set up that custom look using v-log as your base profile, 640 is the base iso. It won't go lower. My luts (and probably many others!) Use a more natural profile as the base. I use Cine D personally, which means you can shoot any ISO ya like and it'll look lovely!

    I quite liked the look of your baked in LUT for your B roll and the B&W LUT for the stills images.
    Was the talking head at timestamp 3:24 using your baked in LUT as well, because I liked your skin tone which looked natural, even in the different lighting. 😀
    The only LUT I use is the LOG 709 in the LOG View Assist when filming with my GH6. I'm scared of LUTS but I do like the View Assist when shooting in Log.

    • @frankinblackpool
      @frankinblackpool ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MicroFourNerds Since learning how to use Resolve correctly, I have discovered that the Utility Leeming LUT became redundant. Resolve uses a massive colour space and can utilise the entire log profile and maps it to your monitor for grading. The magic is done under the hood so you see a precise mathematical representation which looks great on your monitor. I never realised just how good Panasonic colour science was till I learned about this from people like Darren Mostyn and Cullen Kelly.
      I have a feeling that Resolve would work wonders with your creative LUTs.
