I always thought it was hilarious that for most watch enthusiasts, actually telling time is dead last on their list of reasons to purchase a watch

    • @whereforartthou
      @whereforartthou 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

I think "watch collectors" and "watch enthusiasts" are different people. A lot of people collect jewelry bracelets that happen to be watches and then the enthusiasts actually like having a watch to tell time in a classic way.

I think its shows a different side of watch collecting i know automatics and non quartz are most likely worst in accuraccy but it makes sense. I enjoy have a watch that doesnt need batteries to tell the time. Its like gas vs electric vehicles. Theres something abouy a gas powered vehicle that you can work on and understand how the process works. Vs quartz which unless your studying electrical engineering and how to solder on stuff

Because people have dozens of ways to tell time in a given situation.
Many watch enthusiasts collect mechanical watches because they like the anachronism. Don't you think it's cool that a telling device that operates only on gears, springs and levers can achieve reasonable accuracy?

@ImAlsoMerobiba I love that, and the fact that the concept of mechanical watches happened such a long time ago, and they were able to manufacture such precise parts during those times amazes me.

Rechargeable battery lasts about 5-7 years, maybe 10 if you are really lucky keeping them charged all the time and is not cheap. If you leave sun and stay locked inside house, they are done in few weeks max.
I have Casio with regular CR2012 battery, it lasts 7-8 years no matter where you are and that battery cost $2 if you grab premium one. I have those watch for 22 years and replaced battery 3x. And those are combination of hands and display with databank, stop watch I use quite often, timer, light and beeping alarms.

    1) They are cheaper

I have a Tag Heuer Formula quartz that is dead nuts on the indices and it makes it feel SO MUCH better than other quartz watches. Watch enthusiasts don't buy watches to tell time, we buy them to admire and quartz seconds hands that don't line up is an immediate deal breaker for me personally.

Love them both, as edc, i usually wear a quartz, but its a craftsmanship thing for me. A cheap, factory made quartz movement can be pinpoint accurate, it takes time, patience, and years of skill to create a mechanical movement that is anywhere close to that accuracy, and that's just beautiful to me. To me, it's similar to the difference in physical vs digital art. You can be extremely accurate and create astonishing pieces in digital media, but with a canvas and a brush, there is no Ctrl-z. The first watch I spent a lot of money on was a Tag Heuer SEL.
I bought it in 1994 and that watch kept perfect time. I never had to reset it.
    I still have the watch!
With regular maintenance that watch still keeps perfect time today! I take it in whenever the battery dies.
Still, one of my favorite watches And one of my all-time favorite bracelets.
I have a small watch collection now, including four Rolex. I still wear that tag from time to time because it’s a classic and keeps perfect time.

I agree totally! if you ask me, from the point of someone looking for a unique and beautiful Rolex that’s isn’t something you will find everywhere, but your budget isn’t infinite, I’d strongly recommend looking for a vintage oysterqartz. The market may have changed in the recent years, but i bought mine in pretty good condition for 2.5k$. That’s a lot less than even a new, boring oyster perpetual and you get something unique that represents a huge turning point for the watch industry that culminated in one of the most beautifully made pure quartz movements ever. Grand Seiko spring drives are also a cool choice, but i decided on a vintage king Seiko automatic instead. It’s a gorgeous dress watch with a green dial an Japanese English bilingual day Date wheel. I got mine from Canada for 1.6k$, again a lot less than a contemporary grand Seiko would cost.

ETA has their PreciDrive line of nearly HAQ movements, thermocompensated and accurate to about 10 seconds per year. Certina and Tissot use them in some models, but except for some Certina dials having “Precidrive” on them and Tissots having something like Chronometer, there’s little acknowledgment and the automatic-movement versions are more expensive. I think TAG Heuer and a few others sometimes use such movements too.

The only pragmatic advantage I see in mechanical watches that I can see is, they'll still work if industrial society collapses and batteries become unavailable. But even so, eventually a mechanical watch will need service, which may not be available in a collapsed post-industrial hellscape. For this reason and this reason only, I hope that civilization doesn't collapse soon.

For me it’s about the beauty of the movement. The level of skill and time it took to build them. How it’s just real. We all sync our mech or auto up to a digital or quartz. We understand they are more accurate but there’s something about watching the sweeping hand cross the second smoothly and seeing the wheels turn that the bland accurate seconds ticking away of quartz can’t touch.
