    This is why I have 11 watches. I've talked about selling, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do it. I don't mind letting a watch sit for a couple of months and then rediscovering it.

      This why I have 36 watches! 😂 My collection dates back to 1974 and consist of affordable watches, apart from my grail (Heuer Autavia). I can sell some of my original purchases at a significant profit as I have kept boxes and papers for all, but it never crosses my mind. I now rarely add new pieces to my collection as I enjoy my oldies. 😊 Having said that, I don’t have anything to match any of Pete’s eight watches!

    • @edteach3r
      @edteach3r ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ItBetterBeFast Very true; but if you hang on to them long enough, they actually seem to gain some value over the long term. For example, I bought two Seiko 6149 chronos, one in 1972 and another in 1974. They cost me less than a $100, and now probably would sell for $800 as I still have original boxes and papers. The same would go for my LordMatic, King Seiko, 6306 Turtle, etc. This is all hypothetical because, as I said, I won’t sell them as they are magnificent timepieces…. but my kids might one day. 😊

    If you're thinking of parting with a piece, try putting it in the box and storing it out of sight first for at least 1 month. If you have withdrawal symptoms for it, it's a mistake to get rid of it.

      This is a great variant of the general idea that if you have a big decision to make that is not to be offered again, goto sleep that night imagining not taking the opportunity, and when you wake up the next morning see how you feel about your decision.

  • @kelvinwong829
    @kelvinwong829 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Made this mistake far too many times! Another lesson I learnt is to slow down the pace, I'm always on the hunt for the next watch, if I don't have enough fund, I'd just get a cheaper alternative. This has wasted so much of my many, and instead of getting what I really want, I end up settling on cheaper alternatives cuz I'm impatient and the instant gratification really gets to me. Now I keep the watches, give every purchase a meaning (so I'm wayyyy less likely to get rid of them on a whim and regret), and slow down my purchases and save up for the one I really like!

    I've been collecting watches for the past 10 years and have watches ranging from Cartiers, Omegas and Rolex to Tissots. My absolute favourite watch is the one that made me fall in love with watches, the 1930s Mickey Mouse Watch from the Chicago World Trade Fair. I finally found it in good working condition and I wear it constantly. Watches are ultimately pointless, a £10 Casio is going to be more accurate than the fancy Cartier but that's the beauty of Watches, they make you feel happy and we can admire their beauty. I'm planning on getting into a Spring Drive Grand Seiko later this year and genuinely cannot wait!

Quite smart, something I could learn from. I think you also are able to manage this by using so many different straps, giving each watch a unique look. Love the options you choose. That brown leather strap looks amazing on the AT. Enjoy the GS and can’t wait to see your reviews on that piece.

    Thank you for this video, Peter. A tip of the hat for your honesty and humility there. I believe you hit the nail on the head by saying you acted intellectually and not emotionally. I've done that myself with the Orient Kamasu Green dial. I sold it at a loss because I "had to move up." Regretted it and bought another. It cost a bit, but the silver lining is I ended up with one running within COSC out of the box. I think the silver lining for you here is you know you have found one of those rare ideal watches that will be with you well into the future.

    I have made the exact same mistake a couple months back by selling my green Willard. I still don't know why I rushed into selling that watch, luckily I had some rational thought left in me by keeping the OEM Seiko steel bracelet that I have been using it with and only sold the watch with the original rubber strap. That watch meant so much to me that it felt like it left a void as soon as I sold it. Long and behold I bought the exact same model when I was in Japan last month and fitted the steel bracelet that I still kept for it.
    It was a costly mistake but I now feel whole again - safe to say I have found my forever watch.

  • @tinentdan
    @tinentdan ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Having a maximum number of watches on your watch collection can be a good thing. However, on a non related topic, I was given the advice that when you want to upgrade your gear, it is a good idea to make sure the upgrade is really an upgrade. Or in this case, buy the new watch and after trying it, decide if is a good substitute for the one you had decided to swap it, or if you'd rather change it for another of your watches, or if you're selling the new one and keeping your old collection.
    In hindsight it's easyer to see, but maybe a new rule could be 8 in the collection plus one on "probation" while you decide which are the 8 keepers.
    By the way, the aquaterra is a very nice watch, just out of my price league. I'm glad you could manage to keep owning one, as it seems to be a watch you wear and enjoy.

The first with a stunning, discontinued, green-sunburst dial kinetic which I gave to my sister which she adores. I now get watch envy every time I see her. I'm a new watch enthusiast and have decided to try and get my watch collection going. I'm on a budget, so a watch like the Omega Seamaster will be a significant purchase for me. I appreciate you mentioning having a watch limit and not exceeding it. I think I'll implement the same approach with a 6-8 watch collection. I'm hoping to buy a "luxury" watch from what what I have learned are the 3 big countries for watch making. Swiss, German and Japanese. Swiss will be the Omega Aqua Terra, Japanese will be a Grand Seiko Spring drive and German will be a Glaschutte Original Sixties Panorama Date. The other watches will have to be much more budget friendly. Thanks for the content.

    Exact same story here, but mine Aqua Terra has a blue dial. The new owner left my house and I regretted it instantly. 3 months later and a 600 euro surcharge and I had the AT back in the collection. Lessons learnt 😅

    Great advice, hats off to your openness letting us know your error. We all make mistakes, the secret is to learn from them. Which you quickly rectified, albeit with a financial penalty. Enjoy that great collection.

    I can see why, I've never had a Grand Seiko, and I've had an Omega. But I've wanted a Grand Seiko for a long time! However, that Omega is beautiful.

    I've tried on that exact white dial AT a few times now, and it's seemingly a perfect watch. My only minor complaint, and one that makes me hesitate on the purchase, is the thickness or even more so the appearance of the thickness on the wrist. I think on paper it's not too much thicker than a Datejust, but the case sides of the Omega wear tall for the 38mm size. I just wish Omega would slim down their watches a bit. Finally, one Omega, the new Speedmaster, is thinner than the predecessor, and for a Chronograph, it actually wears fairly thin, a bit more than the last generation. It's noticeable on the wrist. Other than thickness, I absolutely love the 38mm white AT. It looks so good.

    Most important, you are happy again and always there is a lesson to learn. Watches are impulsive buys with emotional results. Im still looking for my next purchase if there is one waiting for me......

    Thank you for this video. Not only you learnt a lesson, which is great, but you also made us think and learn, which I think has infinite value (you can't measure it ❤).
    I'm starting my collection, I have like 9 watches, and in the beginning you want so many watches and you get easily influenced by everything, especially with social media...
    I guess I have to calm down 😅😅

    The Grand Seiko outclasses the Omega in every respect. It frankly makes the Omega look pedestrian and like a Seiko 5 side by side.

    I've watched this video a few times since it's release. And to date, learnt a fair bit on watch collecting mistakes and regrets.
    Every watch collected has its story, time, effort and money spent on earning the watch... It's reaching the point of hoarding (rather than collecting) and need to start letting go of some timepieces that have long been neglected.
    Takes discipline to keep to that 7... Maybe 11 🤞🏻😅

    I think it is a win win. Your viewer got a watch, you got a new watch and bought the old watch again, and you made a video I really enjoyed watching. The only advice I can give you is that instead of settling on 8 watches you must increase it to 9 for your collection. I think you might buy a similar Sinn that you sold because of Sellers regret.

    After 6 yesrs of procrastinating, i finally decided to sell off most of my watches. I started in Jan of 2020. It took almost 2.5 years, but i sold 200+ pieces. Now I keep it to 12 watches, no more, no less. One out, one in. Seems to be working! Cheers.

    I’ve done a similar thing. Sold a JLC MUT 34mm, 2005 full set, mint condition with the amazing 849 movement and see through caseback, jlc serviced, deployant clasp the perfect watch.
    I sold it and I can never get a better example back. What can you do.

    The AT 38mm is a beautiful watch but my only concern is that with its 19mm lugs, how easy is it to find bands that will fit it? Or do you simply put 20mm bands on it?

    • @PeterKotsa
      @PeterKotsa  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A bit of both...some 19mm and sometimes I squeeze 20mm in as well..👍

    I remember going through the same feelings when a Snowflake I wanted was within the resale window of my Planet Ocean. I was very close to making the swap, but decided to go on holiday with the PO as a sort of “farewell tour”. Afterwards, I realized what a dingus I was, and told myself to hold on to the Omega and just patiently save up for the GS. I’m so glad I did! Thanks for sharing your experience 😊

    Did the same mistake 4 times, with a Cocktail Time, a PADI, an I.N.O.X and a Colt and bought them again later!
    Did it with other watches, but didn't buy them again.
    Now I try to reduce my collection piece after piece, and being really careful about my choices, when I buy but also when I sell.

  • @Valera_Scotland
    @Valera_Scotland ปีที่แล้ว

    Did the same thing Peter. Sold my Aqua Terra 2503.50.00 and then days later you released that amazing video praising it. I knew that I had made a mistake then.... and two years later, it's back on my wrist. Your white omega would be a great pairing with my black dial. Let me know if you ever decide to sell! (I'm joking)....
    But honestly, I really love your white dial and may pick one up some day.
    I've learned my lesson. Don't sell what you love just because you want to try another watch.... keep the core pieces of your collection. 100% ❤

    These are the two watches I am in between. I want the Omega so I have a watch I can wear on many occasions and be comfortable in; I want the GS because I love the hands, the movement and the colour…. If you had to chose one of them which would you go for???
