This is why I have 11 watches. I've talked about selling, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do it. I don't mind letting a watch sit for a couple of months and then rediscovering it.

This why I have 36 watches! 😂 My collection dates back to 1974 and consist of affordable watches, apart from my grail (Heuer Autavia). I can sell some of my original purchases at a significant profit as I have kept boxes and papers for all, but it never crosses my mind. I now rarely add new pieces to my collection as I enjoy my oldies. 😊 Having said that, I don’t have anything to match any of Pete’s eight watches!

@@ItBetterBeFast Very true; but if you hang on to them long enough, they actually seem to gain some value over the long term. For example, I bought two Seiko 6149 chronos, one in 1972 and another in 1974. They cost me less than a $100, and now probably would sell for $800 as I still have original boxes and papers. The same would go for my LordMatic, King Seiko, 6306 Turtle, etc. This is all hypothetical because, as I said, I won’t sell them as they are magnificent timepieces…. but my kids might one day. 😊

If you're thinking of parting with a piece, try putting it in the box and storing it out of sight first for at least 1 month. If you have withdrawal symptoms for it, it's a mistake to get rid of it.

Excellent story. I love how you are disciplined enough to limit your collection. You are able satisfy your thirst for something new and different but manage the budget. Quite smart, something I could learn from. I think you also are able to manage this by using so many different straps, giving each watch a unique look. Love the options you choose. That brown leather strap looks amazing on the AT. Enjoy the GS and can’t wait to see your reviews on that piece.

I just took the plunge and i am awaiting delivery of a brand new Grand Seiko Shunbun. It took years of quiet deliberation and contemplation. When i put it on my wrist i knew it was the watch for me. My next is the new diver from grand seiko. No other brand speaks to me as much as Grand Seiko.

  • @kelvinwong829

Made this mistake far too many times! Another lesson I learnt is to slow down the pace, I'm always on the hunt for the next watch, if I don't have enough fund, I'd just get a cheaper alternative. This has wasted so much of my many, and instead of getting what I really want, I end up settling on cheaper alternatives cuz I'm impatient and the instant gratification really gets to me. Now I keep the watches, give every purchase a meaning (so I'm wayyyy less likely to get rid of them on a whim and regret), and slow down my purchases and save up for the one I really like!

Both of them are great, but the Omega is a thing of beauty, and arguably more practical than the Grand Seiko.
I have nearly 50 watches in my budget collection, and there are probably 3 or 4 pieces that leave me thinking "WHY???".
Thing is, I'm still a struggling videographer, but I've been a teacher for over 30 years, so I know that you have to stuff up occasionally - otherwise you're not learning, and what's the good of that?

We watch people are odd. Those watches basically look identical to anybody who isn't a watch nerd. Reminds me of the old Emo Philips comedian joke. He had a red and black jacket on and he says, getting kind of warm, let me take this off. He takes the jacket off and he has a thin sweater underneath with the exact same colors and pattern. It gets a laugh for him. I was basically just laughing at you for the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I love both watches and I get it but Imma watch nerd also. What a group we are... 😅

I think we all have similar stories to this. Thanks for sharing by the way! I’m having this exact problem right now. I only have 3-5 at one time. I bought a new watch that I thought I would fund with the sale of another. I don’t want to sell it because I love it, but that was the plan. I figure these two are too similar. For now I’m holding off, but I too like having watch collecting rules in place so that I don’t get carried away.

Wow, I love the look of the Omega. It seems to tick all the boxes for a dressy sports watch. It does sound like a costly mistake but at least you have the watch you love back again plus a sensational GS. Fortunately my two watch regrets were with much cheaper Seikos. The first with a stunning, discontinued, green-sunburst dial kinetic which I gave to my sister which she adores. I now get watch envy every time I see her. Secondly a metal bracelet version of the ubiquitous Seiko SNK809 which I gave to my friend. Fortunately it was only £90 to buy another one - huge difference to your costly faux pas!

I'm happy you sorted this, Peter. I could feel your turmoil after the decision, which must have been frustrating as there were other options and they might have tainted your experience of the GS. Of course no one knows the exact state of your collection at any one point, but considering you had multiple if the same Sinns in the same small collection, I do think this decision makes more sense. It's a pity you lost some money in the process, but probably you know even better what you value about the pieces you own now. Moreover, as a viewer, I think you've made the case for Omega on so many occasions that it truly must suit you to have a champion watch like this in rotation. Enjoy!

Thank you for this video, Peter. A tip of the hat for your honesty and humility there. I believe you hit the nail on the head by saying you acted intellectually and not emotionally. I've done that myself with the Orient Kamasu Green dial. I sold it at a loss because I "had to move up." Regretted it and bought another. It cost a bit, but the silver lining is I ended up with one running within COSC out of the box. I think the silver lining for you here is you know you have found one of those rare ideal watches that will be with you well into the future.

I have made the exact same mistake a couple months back by selling my green Willard. I still don't know why I rushed into selling that watch, luckily I had some rational thought left in me by keeping the OEM Seiko steel bracelet that I have been using it with and only sold the watch with the original rubber strap. That watch meant so much to me that it felt like it left a void as soon as I sold it. Long and behold I bought the exact same model when I was in Japan last month and fitted the steel bracelet that I still kept for it.
It was a costly mistake but I now feel whole again - safe to say I have found my forever watch.

I've been collecting watches for the past 10 years and have watches ranging from Cartiers, Omegas and Rolex to Tissots. My absolute favourite watch is the one that made me fall in love with watches, the 1930s Mickey Mouse Watch from the Chicago World Trade Fair. I finally found it in good working condition and I wear it constantly. Watches are ultimately pointless, a £10 Casio is going to be more accurate than the fancy Cartier but that's the beauty of Watches, they make you feel happy and we can admire their beauty. I'm planning on getting into a Spring Drive Grand Seiko later this year and genuinely cannot wait!

Having a maximum number of watches on your watch collection can be a good thing. However, on a non related topic, I was given the advice that when you want to upgrade your gear, it is a good idea to make sure the upgrade is really an upgrade. Or in this case, buy the new watch and after trying it, decide if is a good substitute for the one you had decided to swap it, or if you'd rather change it for another of your watches, or if you're selling the new one and keeping your old collection.
In hindsight it's easyer to see, but maybe a new rule could be 8 in the collection plus one on "probation" while you decide which are the 8 keepers.
By the way, the aquaterra is a very nice watch, just out of my price league. I'm glad you could manage to keep owning one, as it seems to be a watch you wear and enjoy.

I prefer the design of the GS, but like the sizing of the Omega better.

I've tried on that exact white dial AT a few times now, and it's seemingly a perfect watch. My only minor complaint, and one that makes me hesitate on the purchase, is the thickness or even more so the appearance of the thickness on the wrist. I think on paper it's not too much thicker than a Datejust, but the case sides of the Omega wear tall for the 38mm size. I just wish Omega would slim down their watches a bit. Finally, one Omega, the new Speedmaster, is thinner than the predecessor, and for a Chronograph, it actually wears fairly thin, a bit more than the last generation. It's noticeable on the wrist. Other than thickness, I absolutely love the 38mm white AT. It looks so good.

I sold a "grail watch" of mine (solid yellow gold chronoswiss Opus) to fund a 41mm Rolex Wimbledon 2tone rose/jubilee/fluted.
I dont regret the swap, but im pretty sure i will buy another Opus on leather strap not too far down the way. Its BEAUTIFUL. Its the absokute perfect dress watch and conversation piece. Try wearing one to a wedding or formal gala.

Exact same story here, but mine Aqua Terra has a blue dial. The new owner left my house and I regretted it instantly. 3 months later and a 600 euro surcharge and I had the AT back in the collection. Lessons learnt 😅

I’ve never had to rebuy a watch, because I don’t let any go. Yes, the collection has exploded in the last year or so, but they’re ones that I like.

Most important, you are happy again and always there is a lesson to learn. Watches are impulsive buys with emotional results. Im still looking for my next purchase if there is one waiting for me......

I’ve got an 8 watch collection. Two of them get all the wrist time. Those two happen to be on another level relative to the other six, but they are good watches that sit. I like the Sinn 556. Those colors are indeed playful, but they’d mostly sit relative to a more versatile dial color of the same model.
That GS is quite beautiful, I love what they represent, there’s a handful of their watches I’ve come very close to owning, there’s typically some hurdle - it could be a chunky case or exclusive model to some other region of the world. That example is a beautiful GS, but the AT truly has its own thing going for it, plenty of virtues.
Those Sinns would have been a no brainer to move along. As much as I like the 556, I don’t think it would warrant much wear with the AT nearby.

I've put a bunch of watches in the "sell" pile. When I don't want to get them out of their boxes to wear for a month, then I know it was the right decision.

What a banger. I only wear Nato or Stainless. But mostty Nato especially elastic. But that Skyflake on the sailcloth is so versatile. I can't make up my mind so many incredible options with Grand Seiko. I'm on the fence with the pink Shunbun, the green GMT Hi-Beat with the green ceramic bezel, the insanely eye-mugging blue peacock Hi-Beat, the white Birch, the bamboo GMT, the options are so good it makes deciding a real dilemma. This could easily turn into an addiction. I can't believe people are blowing north of $15k on sterile boring Submariners.

Did the same mistake 4 times, with a Cocktail Time, a PADI, an I.N.O.X and a Colt and bought them again later!
Did it with other watches, but didn't buy them again.
Now I try to reduce my collection piece after piece, and being really careful about my choices, when I buy but also when I sell.

❤️rules Head! Great swap out Peter, two beauties in the hand, bye bye Sinn👍🏻⚓️🦘
Added another vintage Omega, but it sits in the safe more than on the wrist.
Wearing some of my builds daily and appreciating the affordable pleasure they bring🤩

Sinn was also a hard to let go piece as it was practical in my rotation, but I bought three for that exact reason 👍
