The image of those fireworks that burst in dazzling colors behind John and Nancy, as the camera turns around them and this music plays gently over it, is one of the most beautiful scenes I have seen in any movie. Brian DePalma, Pino Donaggio and Vilmos Zsigmond are all geniuses of their craft, and they all worked together on this film and made something truly special.

The essential theme of Blow Out is an average man's indignation at being crushed by an uncaring system, one that has let him down repeatedly and yet he still struggles against injustice; when he loses Sally, all of that remaining fight drains away from a totally disillusioned and beaten Jack. At the culmination, in his career as a sound expert, all he is left with is fulfilling his job by providing the perfect scream to a cheesy film. Tragedy is multiplied by the horror that he rescued her once but ultimately could not save her. This is a remarkable story and an utterly brilliant film.

This melody is so hauntingly beautiful; by the finale of the film l can recall tears streaming down my face and this music provided an utterly beautiful backdrop. Riveting.

The one problem with the ending of Blow Out is that Brian DePalma broke Alfred Hitchcock's "bomb theory" rule about building suspense, which is that you can set up the audience to know that a bomb is about to explode so that they freak out in anticipation, but under no circumstances can you allow the bomb to actually go off. The ending of Blow Out let the bomb go off.
Yeah, but it did leave you with a "Vertigo" ending of it's own. Blow Out left the audience in shock with it's fantastic shot of the actors in the foreground and the fireworks in the background. While the camera was going around them. Then, it shows you the shortest of warp up of sub-plot that becomes part of the main story. What a huge pay off at the end. A short epilogue, if you will.
I thought the scream was a bit much too. But it's impact to the main character changes everything. He was trying to do the right thing. He got the bad guy, but at what cost. Sally's life. Jack is going to carry that weight for the rest of his life. He missed his chance to exposes the real culprits. The footage was destroyed and what does he have left. The blow out and Sally's scream. In the end, Jack has to go on with his life. Return to his job and find the scream. He uses the scream keep his only job left. The only thing he is good at. Going back to where the film started. This is how Brian De Palma sold me with the scream.
Yeah, I get all of that. I do love the movie, but it's a difficult one for me to watch because of the ending. Body Double was depressing at times as well. De Palma really seemed to be in a negative mood around that period of time.
And that's what good about Blow Out. It left you feeling something. He left you feeling what the character feels. I got to say, only a few directors out there can leave you with that. Especially the ending. He took a big risk with that ending. I praise him for taking that risk. I completely understand where you are coming from.
Paul Dante Yep, Nancy was great in all of the DePalma films she was in. Caine was great in Dressed To Kill as well. Sean Connery was originally approached to do the role, but turned it down.

True, Vertigo's ending was tragic and divisive as well. Using Sally's scream on the horror movie soundtrack was a bit much, though. It was depressing.
