Julie Andrews. Nothing and no one could ever compare or compete with her voice, her phrasing and her inimitable sense of style and grace in music. She is one of a kind and still is, despite the loss she has suffered. Thank God we have these moments to treasure when we can all harken back to the moment we first heard it....the moment a love came to us or left us...the moment we, once again, fell in love with this fabulously talented woman.

She often said her voice was white, while I understand where she would think of that, it however by age 35 warmed to something golden and superior. This song makes me sad. I love hearing the music, Ms. Andrew’s voice, knowing this movie and her performance was 52 years ago and we will never see or hear music like this again. I’m glad you can watch this on TH-cam. I downloaded the song off of apple tunes and listen often.
Often I think this sad old world is whistling in the dark. Just like a child, who, late from school Walks bravely home through the park. To keep their spirits soaring And keep the night at bay. Neither quite knowing which way they are going, They sing the shadows away, Often I think my poor old heart has given up for good. And then I see a brand new face, I glimpse some new neighborhood. Saw Darling Lily at age 13 with my parents & it was my favorite!! Julie Andrews is the absolute classic & a voice like no other!!! Thank you for sharing & bringing back such a beautiful memory!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Julie Andrews singing is singing from another level, another planet, fabulous! Such a warm voice, such a great appearance! She touches me in the heart, every time i hear her voice! Superb class!!!❤❤❤❤❤
They filmed this opening on a soundstage rather than the actual stage used throughout the film because the stage floor was too bumpy to achieve the smooth camera transition they wanted.
This song and her voice takes me back to when I was 6 or 7 years old ...like a dream floating away in a sweet blur of my innocence ...when the world was more romantic and the melody and arrangements of the orchestra were far more artistic than electronic instruments we see now... Thank you Mrs Andrews for bringing so much beauty into this world
I remember seeing this movie premier as a kid a cool theatre in Monroe La. when this song started in complete darkness you could only see her face on screen in whole theatre. Wonderful memory
A J sadly that was before my time. Seen her films lately, all these amazing video posts of her mind blowing performances have made me fall in love with this treasure of a gem! Am looking for a DVD of her Julie Andrews Hour! Her Carnegie Hall show with Carol Burnette is unavailable on Amazon! Wish they'd remaster all her brilliant beautiful performances, it would be beyond awesome!
A J you are blessed! I wish I had that one in this lifetime opportune moment! Been looking for a DVD of her TV show after watching awesome clips of it here on You Tube! How I wish they'd remaster & put it out on DVD! Just got her singles on AMAZON few days ago!
I have the original DVD, but then I'm not selling it. Why should I? Because I was in the show..... It reminds me of that beautiful memory. Ah I wish I was young again. In the 1960's....I was born in 1954. I have many memories with Julie. I used to call her auntie. But she really wasn't.... I had a I still do a spectacular voice. I used to vocalize with her some times
Maybe it's just because it's Julie Andrews singing both songs, but this song reminds me of "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins - another gorgeous song. Both in a minor key? So pretty.
Ostensibly singing for an audience, she is really singing for herself while lost in a reverie of World War 1. The opening minutes right through the credits is one of the greatest sequences ever devised by Blake Edwards.
Ah, yes - Henry Mancini - What beautiful music he wrote. It seems I'm not alone as I read some of the comments. This songs seems to stir memories of loves whom we have lost - as it reminds me of my wonderful husband who passed two years ago. It never seems to amaze me how we are drawn to these poignant songs, though they evoke moments that we once shared and never will again - until we join them. Julie's rendition of this song is nothing less than perfection.
Nothing can possibly compare to the regal purity of a song, like this, so stunningly sung by the divine Miss Andrews. She's a phenomenon that comes along (if we're fortunate) once in a lifetime.
How old are you? Anyway, I'm glad you've found her - you have much to enjoy on TH-cam and her films (and TV shows): as well as one of the top singers of all time (mine are Julie, Judith, Nana, and Mireille - in no particular order; they're all very different), she's an excellent actress, and dancer, and generally Lady. (Though also can be very sexy too! Probably at best in this and Tamarind.)
Such a beautiful song. Did anyone else notice that the entire song is performed in a single continuous take? No easy feat in 1970 when cameras were much bigger and must have been on a crane to sweep around as it does - all with tricky lighting. If she missed her mark by an inch or two she would go out of focus. Even with her vocal pre-recorded, this must have been quite a task. Her husband/director, Blake Edwards did this again in their wonderful, 'Crazy World' ballad in 'Victor/Victoria,' also done in a single take and also a stage performance within the film. So much talent.
Most beautiful song I have ever heard in my life. It brings tears to my eyes every time; Mancini was an absolute visionary and genius, and to pair it with the incomparable voice of Julie Andrews is absolutely perfect. God bless Blake Edwards; this movie makes me cry every time.
I've only recently seen this movie, but regardless of all the negativity it had received over the years, I thoroughly enjoyed myself the whole way through - so much so that I have returned to view it multiple times since. Naturally, I fell in love with this piece (as well as "The Girl in No Man's Land" & "I'll Give You Three Guesses") from the moment I heard it & have pretty much played it at least once a day since. So Beautiful. So Touching.
Those are my favorite songs as well. I can't figure out how it was received so badly. It had everything a great musical should have. Blake Edwards' directing perhaps?

This is one of my all-time favorite songs. And it is also the first time I hear this gorgeous original Julie Andrews version. Achingly beautiful and wistful. Wonderfully performed by Julie with terrific orchestration. Alas! This world is no more!
