Brian De Palma's amazing choise in music, the actors. Everything is timeless. The music is lovely & beautiful & at the same time very haunting. I love John Travoltra & his display of agony. This is my fav Travoltra movie. And, of course, the director's wife, Debra is the "perfect scream".
Everybody’s talking about how underrated and great this movie is and how John Travolta was excellent. But nobody talk about one of the scariest and greatest performances ever in a movie by John Lithgow, he was terrifying as a serial killer in Blow Out. And was even one of his first movies

I've never seen this movie. I was led here by following the algorithm of Pino Donaggio as I loved the score in Carrie. I somehow have heard this song before, despite never seeing the movie.
Just watched "Blow Out", and that musical theme itched me the whole film because I was sure I heard it somewhere before! Finally figured out it was on the soundtrack of Tarantino's "Deathproof" (name of the track: "Sally and Jack").
Such an underrated composer and also songwriter. Did you know he wrote "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" made famous by Dusty Springfield? Great movie too.
The ending itself is sad, and I'm sure a lot of people felt saddened by it. But, speaking for myself, that sadness and emptiness can be pretty magical and, in a way, invigorating.
That feeling of emptiness is a byproduct of the snow in the graveyard. The scenery brings about Anemoia, it wrenches your soul for a love you've never loved.
I felt very sad too!! I’m from Philly and me and my buddy saw this movie around 8 times in theater, we bought these Craig Mini Cassette Recorders and plenty of tapes and recorded the audio of the Movie from beginning to end! Then we set out on a mission to find all of the scenery from the Movie, we found Travolta’s Apartment Building on Arch Street along with Nancy Allen’s Apartment on South Street and every place in between!! Bridal Row used to be on South Street back then in 1981, between 5th and 6th Streets and that’s where Manny Karp’s Office was, we found and went inside that, and Wissahickon Walk/Creek where the car crashed over the Bridge in beginning of the Movie!! I’m telling you there isn’t a scene that we didn’t find, you can ask away!! I found the ending very sad, and I worked on the Renovations of 30th Street Station, so I walked across the walkways where Burke was looking down on Travolta and Nancy in the 30th St. Station Parking Lot, and in the bathroom stalls where Burke strangled the prostitute , and all of those Pay Phone Booths in a row where the sailor and Burke chatted up with prostitute, and all the rest of scenes in there. I felt that John Travolta and Nancy Allen would have made a real nice couple if she would have survived the attack on her by Burke on top of The Port of History Building on Penns Landing near the end of the Movie…….Best, Ray in Philly!!!

Just going to paste Will Menaker’s amazing review of the film here “People love to talk about this movie as a movie about making movies and how it synthesizes "Blow Up" (photos) and "The Conversation" (audio) for a movie about a guy threading sound together with a moving image to create movie magic, but De Palma adds another crucial layer as this film is really about dealing with actresses, or at least how they are seen by the male director. Here, Nancy Allen is the prototypical leading lady, she gets cast in Travolta's movie, and at first he falls for her and wants to love her, but eventually he realizes she's just a dumb whore and goes from cajoling her to barking orders at her to make her hit her marks, remember her lines. Eventually, he gets her killed and moves on to make more movies, taking from her the only useful thing to him: her death rattle. Pretty dark!”
Beautiful score-unnecessarily cruel ending. Also the woman hanging in the stall scene -c'mom, how about the fire works instead ? Great post. Thank you.

Nancy Allen was so cute as Sally and that theme reflects her personality and the way Jack mourns her death so well.

Not in my case, but that feeling is certainly exarcebated by the neo-noir atmosphere, the seediness and beauty mixed together.
