This is the best video I have ever seen on how to do this. The break down is the best I've heard/seen and the video angles are the best I've seen provided in a video. This video is sooo helpful to my brain and eyes being able to deeply catch on to what exactly is being done in chunking.
This is still very difficult for me to do... but I hope that sooner or later - with more practice of course - I'll be able to pick it up. Thanks for making such a simple tutorial!
I agree with the others that say this it he best tutorial out there for chunking. I had been trying for days and would end up hearing plenty of the chord before it was muted. I believe I was using the wrong part of my hand, more of my palm than the part demonstrated here.... I felt like the timing was going to be impossible to master with my old approach. Than you Aldrine!
I have been doing this for years which I learnt on the guitar and transmitted to the ukulele. Can you tell me if it ought to be used in regular playing, or just specific songs. I use it a lot. Thanks for the short knowledgable videos.
Great lesson Aldrine! However I'm trying to understand why you teach the chunk differently than Stu Fuchs. He says only use 2 fingers, you say more fingers gives a stronger chunk sound. He says to mute with the base of the thumb or palm, you teach to use your thumb. You both have awesome technique and sound great... So just wondering why they are different and which way I should go... Right now I seem to be doing a combination of both your techniques... But fairly often I either barely contact the strings or don't get them muted properly. I'm getting better but still need lots of practice.
In bluegrass, fiddle players use this same sound (also called chunking) when someone else is taking a solo. Takes the place of a drummer and a hi-hat. . . . an improvement, I'd say! LOL!! p.s., I'd really rather have Chung King!!
How do you make it so when you are down strumming with all of your fingers you don't create harmonic tones, but rather a clean sound before muting the vibration with the side of your thumb?
Aldrine you a good teacher and i like to learn from your vids.I'm living in south pacific (New-Calédonia) for 3 years now i i started to play 1 year ago.Mine is a polynesian one like at Tahiti, with 8 strings and mine sound different as yours !So i would like to buy a hawaiin one by the internet and i try to find out where i can buy and wich one ! can you help me a bit with it? it would be much appreciated.Merci mon ami ! take care !
That's not the angle my hand takes after a down strum. I hold my uke with my forearm against the butt and my wrist is in line with the strings. This method is impossible unless I move my arm on and angle and then I can't hold the uke up.
I physically cant do this... literally practised for hours but my fingers always sound the notes before I can get my thumb there to mute the strings. ohh well

Feels like I'm going to break my strings .-.

Thanks so much, really need this to play Ain't No Rest for the Wicked
After some time of playing this style I found some serious damages from the metal frets on my strings. Is it normal?
Does he use all five of his fingers when he Chunks at full speed? Do you?
How do you make it so when you are down strumming with all of your fingers you don't create harmonic tones, but rather a clean sound before muting the vibration with the side of your thumb?
Do you strike the string using your index or you just hit the strings with your thumb? :)

Tks good boy. Alhoa.
BUT...can you Chunk if you play with your thumb? (Guitar Habit)

I love you!
Cover please "Lucky" by jason Mraz
I use a pick does it still work like that?
Quentilot don't use a pick for ukulele
Fiona M o ok
Quentilot you can use a pick, just make sure it's felt. It's what I use and it works fine
Can someone please tell me how to chunk without hurting your thumb ?
Hey...who dissed the chunk???
Trying to do this makes me want to throw my ukulele through my monitor. My patience level for learning is literally 0
and what kind of uke is that?
yeah I got it =D
That's not the angle my hand takes after a down strum. I hold my uke with my forearm against the butt and my wrist is in line with the strings. This method is impossible unless I move my arm on and angle and then I can't hold the uke up.
tHaNkYoU!!!!
when i do it there is no sound !!! so sad :-(
I keep hitting the uke making a loud tap noise at the end... Agggh
I physically cant do this... literally practised for hours but my fingers always sound the notes before I can get my thumb there to mute the strings. ohh well
...perfect video, but.. haha.. now I have a blister on my thumb. Chunk-Break. Time for watching “Moana“...no: “Vaiana“ 😁
I still don't get it. :(
Heaps of help, just watch his hands and whrn you're strumming down you want to press you thumb more into the strings so it's stops them vibrating
i always thought it was called chucking
Hey everybody the guy below me got the first comment! :O
I'm the 1k like 😂
Second
I can’t chuck without hittin the uke lol
All ukulele players are not fortunate enough to be born with a thumb like yours to play the ukulele.
Damn it... not as fast as shmant
Lol ikr
Wtf my hand can't do that
I always thought it was "chuck" not chunk lol awkward
DOSNT work unless you have a strap
Or you know... sitting like most people do when playing the uke
you mean CHUCKing?
BlinkinFirefly From what I've seen, both terms are used.
+Thomas Webster practicing for an hours isnt going to help. to improve on an instrument you cant just force it, take a break or try again tomorrow.
