How wonderful, I'm so glad it was helpful to you! When you're ready for the next step, watch the follow-up video (no rush!): th-cam.com/video/Y0JDOJYZHhk/w-d-xo.html
Thanks! You can count the four parts of this clawhammer strum as if you were counting in 4/4 time, so instead of counting 1 - 2 - 3 - 4, you can "count" pluck - rest - strum - thumb. If time signature is a new concept for you, this video can help: th-cam.com/video/fNbLqh0RMRw/w-d-xo.html
Yay! Once you have the strum down, try working on making chord changes while maintaining the strum. When you're ready to try clawhammer with a three-chord song, check out th-cam.com/video/Y0JDOJYZHhk/w-d-xo.html . Happy strumming!
Thank you sooo much 😂 not sure if you got faster or I got slower (✔️) but it is a great introduction to clawhammer which I have been trying to make time to learn for quite a while. A case of when the student is ready the teacher appears. Really good lesson 🙏🙏🙏
I would love to learn how to play the clawhammer Ukulele but the one you are playing it discontinued. Do you have a recommendation for another clawhammer ukelele? I love this tutorial. Thank you for sharing. Jan
Hi Jan- so glad you liked the tutorial! I’d recommend going to your local music store and trying out a few. You might find the banjo uke that’s perfect for you! In my experience, staff at independent music stores have been very knowledgeable and happy to help. I don’t tend to offer many recommendations beyond my preferred beginner uke (the Ohana SK-10), mostly because I’m not all that picky about my instruments and don’t feel terribly qualified in this area. Until you find the banjo uke you’re looking for, keep clawhammer strumming on any uke with high-G/reentrant tuning. Happy strumming!
Hello! No, there are no upstrokes in Clawhammer. It's a unique strum that is composed of four separate actions: 1- PLUCK: strum down on the C string with your index fingernail 2- REST: take a brief pause (crucial to getting the timing right) 3- STRUM: strum down on the C, E, and A strings with your index fingernail 4- THUMB: pick the G string with your thumb I hope this clarifies things!
Yes, this can feel a little awkward or uncomfortable at first! Some players will apply nail strengthener or a coat or two of nail polish to avoid weakening the nail.
This was absolutely what I was looking for! Thank you so much-your instructions were very clear and easy to follow!

@Musical Mama - Ukulele for Beginners thank you very much.
What model are you playing?
This is a Kala Brand US-BNJ-KOA-C, as seen here: kalabrand.com/products/usa-koa-banjo-ukulele.
Wish I could see your right hand a bit more.😊
Sorry!
I dont have the nails for this

My volume is maxed out and it's still a bit low. Anyone else getting that?
