I've got an idea about the boys saying that from around 2017 and onward, anime is like fast fashion where a show is really popular, ends and then no one talks about it. I think it's two parts: 1. More anime is being pumped out than ever before and 2. Anime is mainstream now. Both of those work in tandem to promote hype for something when it's airing and then everyone is on the next show. Whether you view those things as good or bad, having an influx of casual viewers watching whatever new big thing is airing and then having another good show airing next season that they jump to right after to follow the hype is what makes it seem like no one in the "community" talks about something once it's over. The Executioner and Her Way of Life is a great example of an anime that needed to be 24 episodes because 12 episodes only gave it time for the setup for the rest of the series and it hurts because it is one of my favorite isekai. I think Ascendance of a Bookworm is going to start popping off once season four gets released.
Disappointed Ashita no Joe wasn't picked for 1917-1974. Easily one of the most important anime ever made and still reigns as one of the best sports anime
Figures. They don't even talk about kinnikuman when it comes to shonen series, despite the fact that its the modern blueprint for them that even dragonball took from. Even with the new anime out right now
@@epicman-qe9wuI was dying when I saw the cross counter referenced in Umineko And the ending of Ashita no Joe is constantly referenced in anime today too
Historically, Mumin was (and still is to some extent, the merchandise sells really well) huge in both Finland and Sweden. It was without a shadow of a doubt, without us knowing it was animated in Japan, our introduction to anime
Oh man they sang praises of the 1975-1985 era but I still think they understaded how both influencial and excellent those series were. They were absolutely MASSIVE back then and all of them got big internationally. The boys should definitely go back and watch some of them, especially The Rose of Versailles, it aged like fine wine. Also a shame the previous slide didn't include Ashita no Joe, another massive show, but there's only so much you can cram into these slides
I was a little disappointed they didn't watch The Rose of Versailles, it's awesome and the way it influenced queer rep in anime is certainly something worth noting
I'm a bit surprised that they didn't mention Demon Slayer when it comes to the impact and popularity of recent anime series. It's still really huge in terms of popularity and I feel like it always goes viral.
@@tinkeringsoulCould be, I mainly meant the part where Connor says that the only relevant modern animes are Jujutsu Kaisen and Vinland Saga and I was kinda surprised that he didn't mention Demon Slayer after talking about the impact it had/has on the anime movie trend and it being a hugely popular and successful series in general.
They all hate on demon slayer for some reason, like, they talk about how hype it is, and how it's the only anime that REALLY hypes them up, but they also shit-talk it and say it's bad, it's really weird
@@funnynamelol3156 The manga wouldn't be so popular if that was true, if animation is all that matters, then why was the manga so damn popular? Date a Live?. Excluding Kurumi Tokisaki from this statement because people will auto flock for her (for obvious reasons), DAL pretty much fits with your comment, It's pretty much "enough said, it is what it is", It's not necessarily good but it's also not really bad given how the plot goes and it kinda goes dark. People don't really talk about it online too... Oddly enough I thinks it's pretty much how Tsunako works are, Fairy Fencer, Neptunia, Engage Kiss and... that new one I forget the name of but is the newest so far
I'm tired of 'Nobody is talking about it' being accepted as a valid criticism of media. Nobody talks about anything unless you, you know, start a conversation about it. That's how conversation works. Saying a show is bad because nobody is talking about it is like saying pizza is bad because you're not currently eating pizza.
@@Erminence Again, that's like saying nobody likes pizza because neither of us are eating it right now. Ignoring the fact that that just makes no sense, either of us could simply get some pizza at any moment, which would make the entire argument completely fall apart. "Nobody is talking about it." is not valid criticism. Saying that something wasn't impactful is a valid statement, but that type of thing doesn't really matter.
@@SharkofspaceYour pizza analogy doesn't hold up when you consider the scale of the internet. Just because you don't have a pizza right now doesn't mean millions of others aren't enjoying one at this very moment. And about that anime you mentioned - if I am struggling to find people talking about it lately on the internet, chances are it's just can't holding up anymore
If I remember correctly death parade started out as a student project that was turned into a full anime because it won some competition. Really cool show
@@aliasjon8320 It was a short called "Death Billiards" it was basically that. Famous studios would let up and coming animators make shorts and they would be put into a competition. Death Billiards and Little Witch Academia were competing that year I think it was 2013? If I'm not mistaken. 2 years later in 2015 Yuzuru Tachikawa and Madhouse released Death Parade (2015). He then went on to direct season 1 and 2 of Mob Psycho and the anime Deca-Dence. Love Death Parade. Yuzuru Tachikawa is building an incredible catalog.
2010-2013 I can't forgive you for forgetting Highschool DxD. Literally one of the best ecchi and harem anime out there and it even had a good story which is pretty rare for an ecchi/harem show (im still waiting for season 5 😭)
It was a great romantic drama anime, my mom also grew up watching it in Argentina... so dramatic and the Spanish dub was so funny at times, Candy Candy has the most hilarious fight scene (Terry vs Archie) I watched the whole anime(so much filler) and read the manga some years ago, it is quite good. 1:17:45 it was neither Bleach nor Blue Exorcist. It was Blood+. but thanks for reminding everyone of the underrated banger that is Colors of the Heart, Joey.
No. The reason Saint Seiya wasn't a success in English speaking countries is because it was heavily censored in the US, to the point that the story didn't even make sense. In Spanish and French speaking countries, that respected the source material, it was huge.
Joey judging Ouran Highschool Host Club by the fandom is so dirty The fandoms ALWAYS typically ruin the show if you are in the trenches as its usually teens But as someone who grew up with it i can say a lot of stuff didnt age well but thats also a show that helped awaken me to what nonbinary mentality was
@@hescutethough2419 I remember Tamaki's development being tied to old fashioned views of women and how they are supposed to act And the other thing that didn't age well is maybe a joke or two But overall I appreciate the effort because a anime that brings up gender back then allowed future shows to do it better. Haruhi is a nonbinary queen 👑 And the anime is still enjoyable yeah
@@tionnakosiancic oh 100% And I point out to people even the show starts out by saying it was a joke at first but conveniently the show forgets to continue to keep their word on that....which made it so gross. The most iconic anime opening has to be the Doraemon theme. Stood the test of time, instant recognizability, each country has its own language version of lyrics. GOAT.

The FMA 2003 ending was brilliant. I think that in its case, they had their own story to tell with it. And they didn't even just pull the ending out of nowhere, they structured it properly and had it planned to go the route that it did from the beginning.
48:10 I love Serial Experiments Lain. It’s definitely a weird show in a way but I feel like it’s getting more relevant as time passes. It’s one of the first shows I watched and it definitely has a special place in my top anime list.
None of them being able to remember Conqueror of Shamballa is insane to me, the original FMA is a great anime, it's just overshadowed by Brotherhood but it's an amazing anime especially considering it came out in 2001 when most anime was ugly early digital trash.
14:22 plus, the OG Urusei Yatsura is not censored, so at the final scene of Ataru Moroboshi chasing Lum at stadium, Lum’s berries are all out, so that must hit different for 12 yr old boys at that time
Nah; as the boys point out breasts were a fairly common sight on TV at the time, and Urusei Yatsura is pretty tame even compared to Maison Ikkoku or Ranma. Funnily enough Ranma is kind of indicative of the times - some of the early broadcasts were censored in various places, though not the character nudity. It was the violence they pixellated ...
So glad that Garnt brought up Haruhi Suzumiya and the boys talked about it. For me, Haruhi is one of the most iconic characters in anime, and the anime is one of the most defining shows of my high school years.
49:47 Conner…most of anime you guys talking about are 深夜アニメ (late-night anime) which are not for kids, so they aired at midnight because they cannot aired at prime time when family is having dinner in front of a TV. Those 子供向けアニメ (anime for children) are aired at prime time
Yeah agreed. I feel just watch what you enjoy, these 3 let memes and internet culture cloud their judgement way to much about what is good and what is not. They don't mention violet evergarden or the dangers in my heart, and they mainly focus on the Shonen, which is the least inspired and generic genre. Hell's paradise was great and so was chainsaw man. I personally hate Jujutsu kaisen, and think fairy tail has better writing than it, but again...that's a personal opinion of mine, not the internet. I feel...people should just have fun and forget about the internet, it's a toxic cesspool, especially places like Twitter and redit, just...have fun, watch what you want.
Joey saying his favorite Opening ever being Chain by BACK-ON from Air Gear brings a tear to my eye. BACK-ON is my favorite Japanese band ever and Air Gear is one of my personal favorites including the manga oh my god the manga is a masterpiece.
I have been wanting an era's of anime video for a while. Glad the boys make the video. I got into anime around the 2014 - 2017. I did have a friend give me anime on a flash drive before that, but that was only Naruto and Bleach. 2014 - 2017, I got more internet, so I was able to watch more. Now I have been slogging back through the eras to see what I have missed
I grew up thinking pokemon was just a cartoon, even now i still refer to it as a kids cartoon. Ive never been able to make that connection that it was in the same category as dragonball and naruto. To me db and naruto are anime, pokemon is a cartoon 😅
25:15 I’m glad I’m not the only one who had that experience. My dad showed me Akira and then a few months after showed me ninja scroll. He didn’t even like anime he just knew I was starting to get into it and wanted to show me some stuff he watched that he thought was cool. Definitely was too young to watch them but it was a great bonding experience.
My pet peeves in these podcasts is them not mentioning anime they dont know... Like detective conan and revolutionary girl utena didnt even get a mention...

1:17:27 That's the 3rd opening from Blood+ (Colors of the Heart). The raw art style for that was pretty cool. It's a 2000s anime. Somehow, there's a Spongebob parody with that opening too.

Seriously guys? They have talked about the show on other podcast episodes...
My man, Gen Urobuchi from 2011 to 2012, aired S1 of Psychopass, Fate Zero, and Madoka Magica.
Absolutely goated.
Not anime but he also wrote Kamen Rider Gaim.
1:45:21 LMAO even Trash Taste cooking Homenaldo .
It's wild to think that my youth consist of Shin-chan, Doraemon, Pokemon, Hamtaro, and Detective Conan. Such a sweet summerchild.😂
Disappointed Ashita no Joe wasn't picked for 1917-1974. Easily one of the most important anime ever made and still reigns as one of the best sports anime
the cross counter is almost always an indirect reference to ashita no joe shits goated fr
Figures. They don't even talk about kinnikuman when it comes to shonen series, despite the fact that its the modern blueprint for them that even dragonball took from. Even with the new anime out right now
@@epicman-qe9wu yeah but they probably think it started in dragonball
@@epicman-qe9wuI was dying when I saw the cross counter referenced in Umineko
And the ending of Ashita no Joe is constantly referenced in anime today too
Yeah only put hajime no ippo but no Ashita no Joe is insane. Even though they put on Ashita no Joe’s spiritual successor, Megalo Box
I think they tried to avoid the super popular ones
@@tinkeringsoulCould be, I mainly meant the part where Connor says that the only relevant modern animes are Jujutsu Kaisen and Vinland Saga and I was kinda surprised that he didn't mention Demon Slayer after talking about the impact it had/has on the anime movie trend and it being a hugely popular and successful series in general.
They all hate on demon slayer for some reason, like, they talk about how hype it is, and how it's the only anime that REALLY hypes them up, but they also shit-talk it and say it's bad, it's really weird
@@nugget6820because a lot of people whose only anime isn’t only Demon Slayer admit while the animation is great it’s all it has.
@@funnynamelol3156
The manga wouldn't be so popular if that was true, if animation is all that matters, then why was the manga so damn popular? People only say this BECAUSE it has good animation, if it didn't, you'd talk about how good it is, but because it's well animated you say it's only good because of that
It's good seeing Slime get a nice hair system
Just because someone doesn't talk about an anime, it doesn't mean the show is worse.
@@Sharkofspace
They mean that the show didn't leave an impact on people enough to bring it up in conversation and have a conversation about it.
2014-2017
I can't forgive you for forgetting Death Parade. The anime was not only good it gave the world Bradio. "Flyers" is still a banger opening.

I can't forgive you for forgetting Highschool DxD. Literally one of the best ecchi and harem anime out there and it even had a good story which is pretty rare for an ecchi/harem show (im still waiting for season 5 😭)
The boys pleasing us with their anime contents
How did you make a whale

Can’t believe Candy Candy was mentioned and called being magic 😭😭 it’s the best slice of life from its time. My mom grew up on it back in Mexico.
It hurt so much Terry saying goodbye to Candy 😭 how could Joey said Magical Girl hahaha
Magic Knight Rayearth was one of the few OG isekais.
Was pretty popular in the Philippines, alongside Yuyu Hakusho, Slam Dunk and DBZ.
It is also getting a remake too.
Over the course of 8 hours I've seen the thumbnail change 3 times 😂
It is new feature on youtube. Creators can upload multiple thumbnails and it automatically changes based on which is performing best. It have been out for a while now.
@@reutermo Oh I didn't know it was automatic
Gonna go ahead and combine 2006-2010 with 2010-2013. Nana, black lagoon, spice and wolf, hxh, fate zero and steins gate are some of my favourite anime oat.
Black lagoon is that good? I watched 4 eps and dropped it
@@Jonathan-os5eoIt's a fun ride. Especially in the English dub. The story does get more substantial later on but it's ultimately unfinished.

Astro Boy deserves a lot more respect and appreciation than it gets. It’s a pioneer of anime and manga and no one talks about Astro Boy.
31:02 Damn. Joey opened memory lanes with that singing 😂
This episode made me go back and download all the old English openings. Man I miss those!
That bulma scene awakened me for sure. Three times in the morning before school.

Connor is absolutely right that Yuri on Ice should have been in the 2014 to 2017, cause it was so big, the first Crunchyroll awards were nicknamed the YOI awards bc the fans mobilized so hard it won every award it was nominated for
7:30 YMS did make a video on Kimba, yes, and if you watched the video, the conclusion is that it is utterly ridiculous to even allege that the Lion King plagiarized Kimba.
1:17:45 it was neither Bleach nor Blue Exorcist. It was Blood+. but thanks for reminding everyone of the underrated banger that is Colors of the Heart, Joey.
Sadly Blood+ did not make the list for 2001-2005 era.
I'd say the best era of anime is the era you grew up watching anime, and the era you are reminiscent most with.
except the eras i grew up with was the bottom of the barrel and ruined by 4kids
Bro you is cringe
This is how most people think
you are just wrong, i grew up watching 2014 era and the early 2000 stuff was just better
Yea that’s the correct answer but that’s boring let’s argue for the sake of arguing I like that better.
No. The reason Saint Seiya wasn't a success in English speaking countries is because it was heavily censored in the US, to the point that the story didn't even make sense.
In Spanish and French speaking countries, that respected the source material, it was huge.
I'm so happy Revolutionary Girl Utena is on there!!! 49:19 😂❤🌹🥀

Joey judging Ouran Highschool Host Club by the fandom is so dirty
The fandoms ALWAYS typically ruin the show if you are in the trenches as its usually teens
But as someone who grew up with it i can say a lot of stuff didnt age well but thats also a show that helped awaken me to what nonbinary mentality was
Ikr its still a fantastic show!!❤
@@hescutethough2419 I remember Tamaki's development being tied to old fashioned views of women and how they are supposed to act
And the other thing that didn't age well is maybe a joke or two
But overall I appreciate the effort because a anime that brings up gender back then allowed future shows to do it better.
Haruhi is a nonbinary queen 👑
And the anime is still enjoyable yeah
I love Ouran but feel like the twins dynamic is the awkward elephant in the room. Did not age well, lol.
Lots of anime had LGBTQ+ themes before OHHC. One great example that did it best (imo) is Cardcaptor Sakura.
@@tionnakosiancic oh 100%
And I point out to people even the show starts out by saying it was a joke at first but conveniently the show forgets to continue to keep their word on that....which made it so gross.
I believe it was supposed to be a joke trope where girls that went to the host club like forbidden romance between siblings or whatever the hell trope popular in Japan- then Japan went you know what we will just never mention again its a joke and the twins don't actually like each other like wtf Japan.
If they kept to their word and made sure the audience knew it was gross it still wouldn't have aged well but it's annoying they got lazy and just let incest joke happen .
The most iconic anime opening has to be the Doraemon theme. Stood the test of time, instant recognizability, each country has its own language version of lyrics. GOAT.

I think this is a redemption episode for Joey. Bro probably knows a lot about old anime and culture.
And, while he no longer watch a lot of modern anime, he watched a lot , A LOT of old stuff

The FMA 2003 ending was brilliant. I think that in its case, they had their own story to tell with it. And they didn't even just pull the ending out of nowhere, they structured it properly and had it planned to go the route that it did from the beginning.

Animation or controversy, why is Mushoku Tensei not on here?
None of them being able to remember Conqueror of Shamballa is insane to me, the original FMA is a great anime, it's just overshadowed by Brotherhood but it's an amazing anime especially considering it came out in 2001 when most anime was ugly early digital trash.
I live in a timeline where Oshi No Ko S2 gets more shine than Monogatari Off Season.
Crazy!
Air Gear is in my top underrated anime. Kills me it didn't end. I really need to dive into the manga.

49:47 Conner…most of anime you guys talking about are 深夜アニメ (late-night anime) which are not for kids, so they aired at midnight because they cannot aired at prime time when family is having dinner in front of a TV. Those 子供向けアニメ (anime for children) are aired at prime time
Every era is the best anime era if you stay off the internet and just enjoying the anime
