The 60GB and 20GB PS3 models are fully backwards compatible with PS2 games. The 80 GB original model is compatible via software emulation so it loses some compatibility.
Twisted I need to add, those backwards compatible systems require a lot of maintenance to keep them alive. They all have an overheating issue which will kill the system eventually. Known as the “yellow light of death” get some new thermal paste and pads and a dust out at the very least on that baby, and also there’s 1 more ps3 bc you missed out and that’s the OG 20gb model with the black trim that the rarest version of the backwards compatible ps3 systems
The Frankenstein mod is the "only" way for a full proof reliable PS3 but sadly it costs from $300-600 to have it done by a specialized technician nowadays

Ps3 40gb and 60gb was true bc. But the 80gb was emulated bc. I ha e the 60gb and still have the original box. I may upgrade mine with 500gb or 1tb ssd it formats automatically and the drives on the bottom of the console to swap you remove 2 screws and the new 1 plugs right in. Then it will format

@@solotheoneandonly if it is usb powered it may just depends if it’s compatible with a console. Sometimes theres different programs that only work on the PlayStation. It’s worth a try though.

It was awesome…took beyond excellent care of it and one day the disk drive went out so I moved onto PS4 because when I called PlayStation, it was too expensive to fix versus buying a PS4 instead…everything else about it was in mint condition…just the damn drive decided to go out👀🤷🏼♂️👊🏻✌🏻

Lmao goodwill has some that are damaged in poor condition and for parts only... also the ones they do have isn't backwards compatable, i havent seen one on their website in good/ perfect condition for auction or sale. Im pretty sure if they listed one in perfect condition multiple people would be bidding and the bid would at least be over 170. They're now going for over 200 in good condition. Post a link of one in good condition working for less than 200 bucks. I'll wait. They're increasing in price.
