Fixing an HP

- This HP laptop from 2005 cost $2000 when it was brand new, and it just stopped working in 2023. Back when HP Inc. was Hewlett Packard, they really put time and effort into making their PC tech last. They were very hard to repair because of their sturdy design, but it was still possible. This computer was expensive but the technology was great for the time.
The fact it last almost 20 years is a testament to its design and hardware.
Could still run Linux for 50 more years
@@bot7845 Where was the mention of software? There's also no proof to your claim.
@@jonnywilson9117 bro why do Windows users always get offended the moment someone dares to mention Linux 💀
And yes, hardware of this age could definitely run Linux just fine. Look up TinyCore for example.
@@jonnywilson9117 linux has lower hardware requirements than windows. I doubt windows even supports this hardware anymore.
With maintenance it probably wouldn't have died either
Customer : sends laptop to his repair shop to be repaired.
He: chucks it in trash.
erm acktually he probably owns the laptop himself ☝️🤓 (i doubt he would ever throw out a customers computer)
He bought it though
@@damiennethesilliestI'm the customer. He threw away my laptop and I'm very mad 😡
He can only replace parts. Zero soldering skills.
It's probably more cost-efficient to throw the laptop away and buy a more modern laptop than trying to repair an ancient relic. He probably gave the customer a cost analysis and the customer told him that he didn't want the laptop anymore.

The Nvidia chips in that same model ended up having bad solder and there was a recall. I got a DV9000 back in the day basically for free. That had bad solder and I called up HP and they ended up overnighting me a box and it went in and a couple days later I got a brand new refurbished machine without the bad solder. It lasted many years.
This was not the case on this model.
The DV6000 was affected by BumpGate a phenomon that took place between 2006 and 2008.
Ever since I made the mistake to get a DV6000, which died 2 months after the warranty expired, I only buy laptop models from a year after release, and google the heck out of them to make sure they are not crap.
I also research the GPU, if it ranks class 2 or higher by them, I'll get it
It's a myth, people used to reball them but it only made the micro bumps on the flip chip package reconnect again, the actual solder joints were not the problem, the glass transition temperature of the chip underfill was breaking apart the micro bumps. Problem was less severe once they switched to a white-ish underfill on later batches, but it happened for years after that anyway with both Nvidia and AMD chips. Replaced hundreds of them over the years.
Bro why do u gotta do my mom like dat every time bruh 😢😢
I had to roast at least 1 mother in this video. You're all still crispy from the last one so I went easy

I actaully still have my HP tank that was released back in January of 2010! Recently i wanted to upgrade the cpu (yes thats a thing of old laptops) and had to disassemble the whole thing and boy was it built like a tank. It still works absolutely fine in 2024 for basic web browsing and light MS Office work. If you're wondering the model is HP Elitebook 8440p and the specs are : Core i5 520M with 8 GB of ram (max cap is 8 GB). Its DVD Drive and 1366x768 screen make for an amazing media machine with some pretty OK sounding speakers!
The DV5000 was a great laptop. HP took that personally by releasing the DV2000/DV6000/DV9000 series.
hahahah I OWNED A DV9000 AND IT DIED
@@SalemTechsperts most of them died.
Still have dv9000 2.4k back in 2007, hinges broke, resoldered gpu twice
@@somewhereinchicago8743I replaced the hinges in mine twice. One before the extended warranty and once after. Safe to say I was done dealing with that pile of shit. DV9310ca, first ever laptop, last hp product I personally bought.
I own a DV6 2030SA and it does work I just need to leave it running for a bit and then power cycle it....the Northbridge went on mine instead of the GPU
It sucks because I REALLY like it

Damn this laptop really gives nostalgia. My father has one which is from 2008 and its insides alsmost the same. 😂
Surprised that's still going!
Redo the thermal paste
Same, I also used a 2008 one
I have a HP Pavilion DV-7 from around 2008 pre-installed with Vista, has the backup discs as well. Last time I checked about a year ago it runs.

The nostalgia of old laptops is real, it's amazing how long they lasted.
Love your shorts. Keep going greatest technician that's ever lived!
I repaired so many of these. And had to reflow so many of those chips.
I only buy HP laptops because HP publishes repair manuals for every one of them that give you all the instructions on how to take it apart and put it back together
That laptop is honestly really well taken care of
That last part got me laughing 😂😂
the old hp dv series was incredible. My grandfathers DV6-1120et is still going strong
just watched the video and my mom got cooked for no reason
OMG! My dad used to have this model laptop. He had it for like 10 years and had taken quite a beating. He works in the construction industry so it was just covered in paint but still worked. Eventually the harddrive gave out from old age.
A home fix my teacher has shown me is to literally put your motherboard into the oven for a few minutes and sometimes it even worked
How to give your family cancer: Speedrun
I love it when Dawid does tech stuff
Atleast they are more repairable than modern laptops.
A friend of mine also had an HP laptop.
It didn't boot up 2 days after the warranty expired.
Support said on the phone that he should just buy a new laptop.
After a bit of research, we found out that a piece of software prevented it from booting up after the warranty expired.
so we simply flashed the bios and it started up again.
HP is the last shitty store!
MY VERY FIRST LAPTOP! It was the best! It was upgradable, battery was removable, best screen for that era too!
The computer content and your funny jokes, you just gained a new subscriber 👍
I have the DV4000 from my childhood and it's still kicking. But one time the dame issue happened, then I watched a video of a guy taping the air vents shut and wrapping it with a thick blanket and turning it on until it overheats and shuts down. That miraculously worked
Dude. Modular set ups and easily removable Keyboards were so nice. A luxury I rarely see now days.
I love you're channel man, God bless ❤
Laptops living that long in general is a testament to the past
That throw was personal 😂
First computer I had was the 4000, took it apart as 14 year old, it gave me the confidence to start repairs and be interested in IT
Its ironic that this DV series was a lasting laptop because older ones with the nVidia chips died all the time. They had an issue where they got warm enough to cause the solder joints on the chipset to crack. A known fix was to literally back the motherboard, throw it in an oven for an hour at 350F, and it would get the solder soft enough to rejoin together.
I love the humor in these videos even if I’m not interested in computers.
I remember working on these. Laptops used to be a pain to take apart.
Had dv5046ea . My father bought it back in dubai in 2005 or 6 . I used it till 2020 and upgraded to mac .
nice seeing the best archeologist that has ever lived going back to work
I have one that I repaired many years ago. It has Windows XP, several emulators, and the grandkids still use it to play games, watch youtube, and netflix. Upgraded the memory, HDD to SSD, and replaced the screen in 2018. Bought a battery from Ebay in 2019 and replaced the speaker assembly in 2021. Still runs like a champ and while it is huge and heavy, the grandkids like to plug 4 controllers into the USB hub and play games on the emulators.
I had my DV7 for over 16 years. I finally dismantled it, because I couldn't upgrade to Windows 11. It still worked fine up to that point. I only ever added more RAM and put in an SSD. That was it. Never any problems.
Greatest technicians that ever lived, lived in previous advanced civilizations and had the same problems as today.
I still have some old laptops and desktops in my work office. Pentium 2, ibm servers, Hewlett Packard & Compaq, Toshiba, Dell and some really old hardware...some of the it still work and boot normally. Back then, things were built to last.
Aight... for those who need to know, but don't know yet, but really should know... HP laptops used to (might not anymore) need a screw put through the cd drive's screw holes specifically to allow the system to boot up at all. I forget the exact reasoning for it, but was quite annoying for novices at the time to find out that after putting them back together and having forgotten that single screw; or having removed the drive all together for whatever reason and not putting that screw back in...
As all techs know; starting screw count for laptop doesn't always equal final screw count for laptop. Those things are quantum or something, cause they disappear when you stop observing them for a moment; or don't have them properly contained. Even then... sometimes...
My personal solution to it all was to draw a line and dot diagram of the laptop and where the screws should be located; and then place that on a magnet with the screws ontop both. This was before tray holders became a norm for hobbyist types like me.
I love how I'm watching these in a random order, yet "The greatest Technician that ever lived" is getting more elaborate/louder than the last
Had one of those. Great machine. Great features and very reasonable price.
OMG I miss that computer! Little SOB was a damn tank!
Knowing when to call it quits on a repair shows your level of experience. Some might have attempted to remove and replace that processor and salvage this archaic piece of history. You chose wisely.
*The Greatest Tech Perserver That’s Ever Lived*
I'd give it to HP, I love that laptop. it's one of the most brilliant builds ever. They are very reliable
Admiring the fact that every video has a unique "The greatest technician that's ever lived" aw man i love em

2007 was the year working on all of those machines. No kidding those units gave nightmares.
It looks so gorgeous 🤩
It honestly looks beautiful
I’ve got an entire one of those that still functions, actually a really awesome display on it for the time
That design is fucking AWESOME wtf.
HP laptops were so well made back then
I really like that linen on how it's your greatest training ever
I had one of those and it was a tank indeed. Back when HP could still build something that wasn't completely obsolete by the time you powered it on the first time.
**processor fried**
Me: **changes the processor**
ahaha dude I love your narratives ! great sense of humor ❤ you're a man of culture I see
That Laptop belongs in a museum.
I saw so many of those laptops with the same problem back in the early 2000s. Every time one came in, which was at least once a week, we knew it'd be the same symptoms.
Either it was the power circuit which meant you could literally take the battery out, hold down the power button, put it back in and the machine would magically work, or it was the GPU and the main board was e-waste.
That's a shame. Last time I tried my 2002 Compaq/HP it still worked. Though that has a 7500m with 64MB of VRAM. A beast of a machine back then, for a laptop.
I don’t appreciate you roasting my mom like that but respect your boldness 🫡
Looks like somebody had some new business cards printed..
I actually wish we still had bulky laptops like this. With today's tachnoligical capabilities laptops this size could be immensely more powerful.
Man, I had one of those. Unbeatable aesthetics if you ask me. I was so sad when I had to give it up.
That throw was personal
I have one of those tanks. It still boots, despite windows trying to kill it.
My 2012 HP Folio 13 laptop is good quality too. It runs Windows 10 well and it works nicely apart from the screen which I damaged (dead pixels) by accidentally stepping on it and the
CPU fan failed for some unknown reason. But apart from that, it's a really good laptop.
And the hinges seems good quality too.
THE GREATEST TECHNICIAN TO EVER HAVE LIVED ❤
We all felt those last two seconds.
My cousin had this in 2008. That thing could run all the games quite well, except that it would overheat. He actually put it on sleep mode while in a laptop bag and cooked the HDD.
I still have a 2012 HP Elitebook 8470p that I bought from my employer in 2016. I run Home Assistant and xLights on it. It's definitely a tank. Windows 10 runs smoothly on it.
i disassembled that thing too. back in the day it was beautiful on the ooutside. really time consuming to take apart. a real design mess.
If i were in your place i would have saved that ....not to use but to admire the advancement we have got throughout years..... it was a piece of history
HP professional laptops are still relativelg good. Especially considering their repairability.
But the consumer models... oh boy, I completely agree with the Trauma those things afflicted upon everyone.
At least with these old systems, you can kinda see where the premium price comes from. In today's era of pc gaming, I feel the same way I do when shopping for a used car.
I still have one of these, haven't turned it on in years, but last time I did it still worked.
Those times are long gone 😢
That actually looks really nice. I wish have one but with a big trackpad and an OLED display with upgradable ram and storage.
doesn't really make it retro with an OLED screen
I remember running CS:CZ and Red Alert 2 in these baby. This laptop served my family for 10 years until I finished highschool and handed it to my younger sibling. Which later fried the cpu by running the laptop hot for a long time.
HP has trouble of overheating back then
When I worked at Geek Squad in that era,(when they actually fixed computers) I noticed if I removed the battery and power cable from an hp laptop, held the power button down for at least 45 seconds (or at minimum when it begins to feel awkward), replace battery and power cable, it powers on. I’m guessing corrupt CMOS data was preventing PoST. May not be the case here, but it never failed me.
I had that laptop back in the day. Laptop is a term used loosely for this beast. It could warm a room and weighs in pretty hefty.
Seeing that ATi logo puts a real smile on my face
2005 laptops were built like tanks but the hinges, power button, and power jack were built by hasbro
