On December 31 2022, the Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie (VRT), the national public-service broadcaster for the Flemish Community of Belgium, recovered a video recording of a 1964 interview of Georges Lemaître. Up until now, that footage was thought to have been lost. This footage represents a unique insight into the views of the physicist often coined as the "father of the Big Bang". Fascinerend om zoveel jaar na dato (1964) deze bewonderenswaardige kosmoloog te kunnen zien en horen. Het helaas veel te korte interview maakte me extra nieuwsgierig naar de religiebeleving van Lemaitre. Als god zich niet manifesteerde vóór de oerknal, wanneer was dán het geëigende moment voor god om acte de présence te geven? En als god niet verantwoordelijk was voor de oerknal, dan kan men logischerwijze niet veronderstellen dat hij wel de hand had in de evolutieprocessen op de planeet Aarde. Lemaitre wijst - als het om het heelal gaat - het idee van een 'plan' of 'ontwerp' af maar de vraag blijft hoe een godsidee te combineren zou zijn met een integere wetenschapsbeoefening. Lemaitre laat zich hier kennen als een uiterst integere wetenschapsbeoefenaar en hij beschikte ook nog eens over een enorme denkkracht. Hij koos ervoor de woorden van Augustinus, die nieuwsgierigheid van de hand wees omdat hij toen al vreesde dat daarmee de bijl aan goddelijke wetten zou worden gelegd, te laten voor wat ze waren: tonggedruis. Het zou me niet verbazen als de priester uiteindelijk werd ingehaald door de kosmoloog. Een prachtig interview! En geweldig dat het teruggevonden werd.

Great pandit he is. So the poetric echo of the big bang will be heard forever and everywhere. Om , this sounds like a definition of god. Funny that many older people saw it when they woke up at the couch late night and tv programm was over - well god can be seen in the tranquille state of mind.
Thank you for posting this gem! Such brilliance given to a priest during his daily devotion to our Lord! The James Webb Telescope is said to be disproving the Big Bang Theory. Yet, Msg. Lemaître's comments at @18:00 remain important to the tautological misunderstanding of "creation" and "god".
8:52 'The disintegration of all matter into an atom' ... that's the translation I got.. If so then that is in accord with Penrose's Cyclic Conformal Cosmology !!!!! Maybe it was a bad translation? Never mind. More importantly, even with flaky translation, this interview is enthralling and very apt to the questions still being asked today about 'A Universe from Nothing' etc. I am inclined to rapidly learn French so as to better understand the nuances in his words. 🙂

Georges Lemaître, o padre astrónomo e físico belga que, antes de entrar no seu laboratório de pesquisa, deixa a bíblia na prateleira.
De nenhum modo os trabalhos e as descobertas do padre Lemaître contrariam Deus e o que está escrito na Bíblia. Tanto isso é verdade que, na época, ele apresentou sua teoria (que posteriormente seria chamada de Teoria do Big Bang) a Pio XII, e o Papa a considerou válida (como doutor privado, haja vista que os papas só falam ex cathedra em matéria de fé e moral).

Quanto à sua necessidade de mencionar os dois mil anos de história, basta recordar-lhe que, sem qualquer revelação divina, vários seres humanos disseram o essencial cerca de cinco séculos antes de Cristo. Não precisaram para nada de nenhuma divindade. E muito menos de uma divindade parola, infantil, criminosa e execrável como a que é apresentada na bíblia.
