I wonder if the reason Isabela didn’t know about the Dalish is because of the lack of animosity towards them. The reason the Dalish in Fereldan and other places are nomadic and secretive is the hatred they face. In Rivain they probably have a normal stable community because they don’t need to wonder to keep themselves and their culture safe.
Maybe we will go to Rivain in DA4? Possibly a little area/city-state of it? Be nice to see an area of any of the nations we have yet to see in game though, i.e. Anderfels, Antiva, Nevarra, Rivain, Seheron, Par Vollen, and of course Tevinter.
What is it with monotheists and trying to convert people who live in jungles? Also, Varrik mentions that his family owns "half a beet plantation" in Rivain, so they are probably cool with dwarves.
Rivain is probably the only society I would want to live. No chantry, tattoos, beautiful peninsula with a mountain range and beautiful tan women? Psh where do I sign up.
I imagine Rivain was also more receptive to the ideas of the Qun (apart from the, yknow, invasion) because of their existing focus on community. The Qun is extreme but definitely a lot closer to their native values than the Chantry
The idea of no currency and communities working together is not really socialism, more like communalism/intercommunalism. Not to be confused with communism.
As far as the Rivaini monachy goes, all of the Seers throughout the nation go to Dairsmuid biannually for a week-long event known as the Allsmet where they swear fealty to the (typically female) monarch. dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Codex_entry:_Seers_and_the_Allsmet
Oh my goodness Rivan and the 600 year gap that included a blight might be a great place to stage a prequel game (or book/comic at least). Eventually the DA story will come to an end but us fans will always want more. I hope once the future is said and done they will look to the past to bring us more from the world of Thedas.
Thank you! My Dragon AGE RPG campaign is headed to Dairsmuid, and this is perfect! In truth, my Dairsmuid will look and feel very Venice-like with canal streets, but the richness of the Rivaini connection to the water and nature. And banana bread!
Rivain always came across to me as based in sicily and in general southern Italy. It's very family based, superstitious but also very casual with religion and for the period of time DA is taking from for Europe southern Italy had a similar situation with Islamic States to the situation Rivain has with the Qun. I can't say for certain but my family comes from the region and the head of the house has always been our nana and from my knowledge that's a common situation.
So about the Rivaini clothing and people having tattoos and piercings be a mark of one's station, I feel like some evidence for it is that we can see Isabella is one of the few people we meet who has facial piercings. She also likes to wear a TON of accessories, from her head kerchief to her necklaces, to her bracelets and earrings. We also have some evidence from Varric in Inquisition. He says that she has become an Admiral, or at least is styling herself as one, and he specifically says, "She's calling herself an Admiral now. I don't know if she is actually in charge or just has a really big hat. Might be the same thing, honestly." This suggests to me that having a large hat could mean the same thing as being an Admiral. Maybe having the hat are the trappings that designate the position she has? Maybe you don't wear the large hat unless you're an Admiral, so having a large hat would be the same thing as actually being in charge? Just some food for thought!
Ty for this video! Its sad there isnt much lore out there but in a way its good, i can fill in the blanks myself when i play my rivaini seer in my dragon age rpg campaign!
You should do a video on the Dragon Bone Dagger from Dragon Age Origins and why have it in your inventory at the end of the game will give u an ending part about it
@Rick K I think he is talking about the sword u can get with Wade in Awakening the quest where he crafts a sword a shield and a chest plate if u make the sword there is an ending special for the sword where the antivan crows steal the sword from the Warden commander
Hey Ghil Dirthalen, I really appreciate the depth and detail of your videos. Currently running through your 100 video playlist of the history of thedas (wow - that's commitment). With respect, I wanted to mention that you often slur your words and when you are speaking quickly it can be sometimes be difficult to understand what you are saying. Humbly, may I request /suggest clearer articulation and annunciation in future videos?
The idea of mages living among their family is great...but Rivain is to loose with it. I'd say it should be that the mages live in the Circle tower but the Tower itself has a village around it where, if they choose so, the family can move into. In turn mages are allowed to spend time with their family every week end. Sort of like a college town. Of course the mages are on occasion allowed to leave the circle during the week to help around the town and socialize, this in turn helps them better integrate into society as they become useful members of it as well as socially accepted. Although yes Templars should ALWAYS keep an eye on them. Mages are still subseptable to demonic manipulation and possession so it's only logical to have the mage police on hand in case shit hits the fan.
First I'd like to say congrats on how many subscribers you have. I've tuned into you channel from the start and loved your presentations. I even tuned into your pod cast. But I have just one issue. While I don't mind the occasion F bomb and God knows that word more than suits things at times the I noticed that with each video you up load that language you use keeps getting more colourful and at times annoying. I know I know criticism! Who needs that. But I need to point out that the Dragon age fan base is extremely varied in background and age. I went back to your older vids and I loved how you came across as intelligent and well spoken with a bit humorous whimsy thrown in and you used thenF bomb and the more flowery language with skill but now it's simply becoming annoying and getting in the way of the entertainment value and informative nature of your videos. But remember I love love your vids and I'm not being an ass honestly. Keep up the great work and all the best.
Socialism requires a strong central authority in the form of government, communities taking care of each do not create that kind of authority because they are too small to be that strong central authority that stretches over the entire country. Socialism also requires a degree of nationalization where the government takes over a certain industry or company, basically turning it into a government-sponsored utility. That is also not what communities taking care of each other means because they are not the central authority managing countries or industries in this fashion. You weren't kidding about not being very good with real life politics lol
Nope that is not socalismen. Communities working together can be found in history. Since socalism is that the state should own everything for the commen "good".
Carl Gustav Tessin State ownership of everything is communism not socialism. Socialism (at least in a basic sense) is the concept that those who have more (e.g. greater wealth) should give more to the state so that the money can be used for the wellfare of all in the society.
You're both wrong. Socialism is the process of workers coming to own the means of production in society, abolishing classism and structural inequality. Communism is the end goal; an egalitarian society we weath is distributed based on needs instead of greed. Marxist Leninist seek to establish Communism with a socialist vanguard party guiding the nation through the usurpation of state power. Anarchists seek to reach communism through the abolishment of the state, its boarders and institutions and replacing it with direct democracy and communitarianism. Most socialist in the 21st century are Democratic/Libertarian Socialists that believe in the usurpation of state power being necessary while also encouraging direct democracy to keep power firmly in the hands of the people. Hope that clears things up.
@@lelgie601 communism and anarchism have similar end goals just very different means of establishing them. Socialism is what communism uses as a means but what separates socialism from communism is socialism usually isnt in favor of abolishing the state and believe in a state where workers own the means of production
You're correct that you don't know much about real politics, if you think that the people voluntarily want to help others. That is known as charity. And do you know which country gives the most charity? The US. And do you know who is more likely to give charity in the US? Republicans.

Rivain has Banana bread and lack of allegiance to the Chantry? Sign me up.
And women like Isabella
The Banana bread wins over many potential immigrants
All I got from this is that Duncan probably rocked several tatts under the robe.
Rivain: "fuck you Chantry" "fuck you Qun" "fuck you Darkspawn"
ps you did it 3k
What is it with monotheists and trying to convert people who live in jungles? Also, Varrik mentions that his family owns "half a beet plantation" in Rivain, so they are probably cool with dwarves.
ChaoticEvilCanary and they’re cool with Elves 🧝♀️ (as I’m sure you already know)
It isn’t just them. Remember how the other groups tend to wipe out any locals when they roll through areas like that.
Rivain has got to be the nation I want to see and learn more of the most, i'm so excited that we get to go there in The Veilguard
The thing from wikia about piercings being related to social status comes from party banter with Isabella and Merrill I believe
Which is very Antivan btw. Even Josie has piercings
@@symptonshizuka7170 in the dragon age ttrpg they have an image of Isabella next to the Antivan Wayfarer background :D
For those who haven’t play DA Origins, annulment is essentially order 66 for all mages under the auspices of the chantry.
Justice for Comrades in Rivain!!!
Rivain is probably the only society I would want to live. No chantry, tattoos, beautiful peninsula with a mountain range and beautiful tan women? Psh where do I sign up.
Yes, but do they have mabari?
And don’t forget that both the Elves and Qunari get the respect they deserve.
I imagine Rivain was also more receptive to the ideas of the Qun (apart from the, yknow, invasion) because of their existing focus on community. The Qun is extreme but definitely a lot closer to their native values than the Chantry
Hopefully we get to see more of Rivain in DA4
Yep this was just second place under Nevarra I had wanted DA4 to take place.
Confirmed
YOU DONT MONETIZE?!! But your videos are SO DETAILED
The idea of no currency and communities working together is not really socialism, more like communalism/intercommunalism. Not to be confused with communism.
I believe that Rivain is loosely based on ancient Corsica
Glennis Gill agreeed
Rivain- the one place in Thedas you might actually want to live

Wait? Did you say Felicisima Armada? (05:10) that's what the Spanish Armada's original name was.
Most nations in Thedas have a clear real world counterpart, Rivain is the only one I scratch my head over though.

i fell from my seat at socialism
Vivienne's people are from there.
Wasn't Rivain founded by a dwarf? I would think they would have good relations with them
You are awesome
Why is there no Video for Tevinter in this series?
Rivain is a socialist matriarchy? Sign me up!
