As a native spanish-speaker, I can say Zevran's and Josie's accents are similar to that of Spain. So, I guess, Antivan's words are from Spain and not Latin American's spanish.
I agree, the cultural flavour of Antiva speak to me of late middle age Spain, the age of the Spanish Armada and the Conquistadores. This would also support the pure but flirtacious nature, Spain was high Catholic, but it was common for upper class women to wear low cut dresses, as the brests were less sexualised than the lower body.
There's a bit of extra flavor you might've included--if you play as a human noble in Origins, you get to meet another Antivan, Fergus's wife, Oriana (who has no accent, but if she's been living in Ferelden for long, that could make sense). If you're a female, she comments on how it's unthinkable for a woman in Antiva to wield weapons, Fergus points out Antivan woman are supposed to be dangerous, and Oriana claims it's because of words and poison. Of course, considering in that same game Zevran mentions his female assassin friend, this is a bit wonky, but maybe that's just the different outlooks between the nobility and the commoners.
I’m pretty sure Zev also mentions the female assassins using slow acting poisons, and referring to some of his own tactics as feminine. Though this might be wrong, it’s been a while.
We’re definitely going to Tevinter in DA4 but I’d also like to see Antiva, Par Vollen, Seheron and Rivain in DA4 and maybe if DA4 does well enough and Dragon Age is still a thing in a few years, we could go to Nevarra in DA5, maybe even the Anderfels.
It reminds me a bit of Sicily/Venice during the Italian states period. It's nice to see more of Italy's history represented in fantasy outside of Rome!
An interesting fun fact: the festival of satinalia has a real life counter part. The ancient romans celebrated a festival called saturnalia , it also featured wild revelry and was around christmas. it was dedicated to the roman god of agriculture, saturn. It seems there is quite a bit of italian influence in antiva.
I also think that there's a massive crossover between the Spanish and Italian, because Zev, and Josie sound Spanish, but Feynriel's father (from DA2) sounds more Italian. So maybe the accent differs depending upon where in the country you are?
Hi! I'm from Spain and when I was playing the second game, I felt really happy because Vicento, Feynriel's father, said "maldición" which is a spanish word! So, maybe Antiva have both accents! (sorry for my english)
Let it be Rome after Rome? So there is a Latin root with all the free marches, I mean I always felt like they were america and a bunch of fuck off small countries but in reality it's like the eu lmao
The last queen of Antiva was Queen Asha Subira Bahadur Campana, the "Queen Mother of Thedas". Every ruler of Antiva since her death, whether male or female, has carried the title of King. I'm not sure if this fact is due to the reverence that Antivans --and by extension, Thedas-- have for her... or if it's because the title of Queen of Antiva is considered cursed after Asha's body was found with four steel swords run through her.
A bit late to the game, and not sure if you mentioned her- but Orianna, the Cousland's sister-in-law is Antivan. She mentions something about how women fighting in Antiva is unheard of when you play as the female cousland. Just thought it was interesting, and added to your point!
I feel the need to thank you for all the lore you have on your channel as well as codec entries. I don't have much time as I like to play videos games so I tend to ignore reading in game. But I love all the lore and play these games for the story. I usually listen to your videos in the car or on my lunch breaks at work. I love your channel.
In Inquisition, Dorian and Vivienne discuss on how dissimilar they are and how they don't get along, but they admit that they should be happy that at least they're not Antivan. Does that suggest that the other nations look at antiva as "quaint" or would that be orlais and Tevinter specifically that look at antiva unfavorably?
After reading Tevinter Nights I concluded that Antiva is more of an Italy, and the language is definitely italian, the Crows use many italian words and phrases in the short stories (even though it does sound more spanish in the games). Also, Maker's breath, how much I want to go there!
I think one of the developers said that Antiva is based on an Italian city-state during the Renaissance. Specifically Venice. Nevarra is Spanish influenced.
A bit out of left field, but the history of the nation of Antiva somewhat mimics pre-unity Italy, with bits and pieces being basically... Well, "passed along" among greater powers. That and the a few bits of language, and fact that Treviso is a legit city in current-day Italy (and Rialto is the name of a bridge in Venice) somewhat reinforces the core theme. Also, "Felicissima" as in "Felicissima armada" is either italian or spanish for "happiest"
...you know...Saturnalia...the famous Roman Pagan festival that is devoted to the god Saturn and is the festival that originated Christmas and the New Year festivities...
Big dragon age fan. Thank you for all the hard work. Also I think some people bought the gear dlcs we either waited for discounts or the extra sum from currency built up and we said screw it...or both...don't judgee lol.
It seems fair to assume that if Antiva was under Qunari rule for a century, it would have left some mark on them religiously. Either they would have a larger amount of people with a positive attitude towards the Qun than other nations, or they would have developed an even stronger dislike towards the Qun than most of the other nations due to the occupation. Or a mix of both. Just speculation of course ^^
So... Fantasy Spain-Italy ... got it. (Rialto, for example, is a real place in Venice, and may Antivan places have italian names. But there is also a heavy Spanish influence.)
Am I the only one who bought the DA 2 item packs? Lol Also is there a possibilty of a weekly or monthly live discussion of all things Dragon Age? Excellent series and great work 😀
"Antiva is a fictionalized version of a medieval Italian city-state like Venice, and it was originally going to be called Calabria" -da wiki, go read the whole thing plus the speaking and words used are spanish. Google is a good thing and vid is 3years old and our darling is nowa days better with researching skills.
I wanna say they use the Castellano dialect but there's this one Antivan merchant dude in DA2 who says Maldición but he didn't lisp the c in the word like a Spaniard would have. Maybe it's a weird mix of dialects?
I'm not an expert, but I'm from Spain, and I think that Zevran and Josephine have a more Italian accent (or at least it doesn't strike me as a Spanish accent I know of). But in DA:II Castillon, Velasco and Vincento are voiced by two Spanish voice actors (Óscar Castellanos and Héctor Garay), which for me is very rare to hear their voices in English, because I've only heard them in Spanish dubs of movies, TV shows or videogames (by the way, none of the BioWare games have been dubbed in Spanish that I know of) and I think I haven't heard of a Spanish voice actor lending his voice in that way
What if we go to both tevinter and antiva in dragon age 4. I wouldn't hate leaving fereldan behind simply because we have a lot of content there already
Ghil Dirthalen - in a nutshell , Antiva = Colonial Caribbean. take the similarities even with the pirates. and that is not the accent from Spain at all. they might roll the R's. but that is not from Spain lol trying to differentiate Spanish by accents is really hard. even trying to say Mexican accent is hard. accent in Mexico change by region, state and in some cities by neighborhood. there are areas that actually have an accent closer to Spain and others that changed so much that is almost sounds like a new language lol
Antiva should just adopt America's approach to woman joining the military which is they can absolutely join but strangely aren't eligible for the draft or in other words forced military service like men. So then they can have their eat and eat it too cause that is progressive!!.. Oh man us Americans really got things figured out 😊
As a native spanish-speaker, I can say Zevran's and Josie's accents are similar to that of Spain. So, I guess, Antivan's words are from Spain and not Latin American's spanish.
Zeromaru X Agreed!

FWIW, Allegra Clark mentioned in an interview with BioFan that she was explicitly working with an Italian accent while voicing Josephine.

You can be an assassin without using a blade. In Japan spies n female assasins would either bed you then kill you while you slept or would poison you.
I really hope we get to go to Antiva soon. I want to see it almost as much as I want to see Tevinter.
They doing Tevinter because of the story plot
Ravain and antiva mostly for the women joesie and Isabella really set the for them.
Yees,i want to see new locations
Antiva is definitely Spain, I love looking at the comparison of the countries of Thedas and their inspirations in our world.
It reminds me a bit of Sicily/Venice during the Italian states period. It's nice to see more of Italy's history represented in fantasy outside of Rome!

Better English than my French man, looks fine😂🤟

Asha employed Queen Victoria's strategy
The last queen of Antiva was Queen Asha Subira Bahadur Campana, the "Queen Mother of Thedas". Every ruler of Antiva since her death, whether male or female, has carried the title of King.

Just want to point out that the Saturnalia was a real holiday in Ancient Rome. It even had the same custom of putting a slave or fool in charge.
Yup mostly Castilian(Spain Spanish) rather than the native Mexican vernacular Spanish.
It is Spain Spanish they modeled the nation of of Spain leading up to the Spanish empire
I wonder if we will ever get a chance to visit Antiva in the games. It would be super cool to see it!
I'm most interested in the Tervinter Imperium. It's culture and politics reminds me of the Sith Empire in SWTOR.
I think one of the developers said that Antiva is based on an Italian city-state during the Renaissance. Specifically Venice. Nevarra is Spanish influenced.

Antiva is my fav out of all of Thedas, that's where I'd want my self insert to be from

They really missed out on making DAI about the spanish inquisition!
Been waiting on Orlais lore for a while now
It seems fair to assume that if Antiva was under Qunari rule for a century, it would have left some mark on them religiously. Either they would have a larger amount of people with a positive attitude towards the Qun than other nations, or they would have developed an even stronger dislike towards the Qun than most of the other nations due to the occupation. 5:00 sounds like this is a job for the dovahkiin dragonborn "Dragon Age: Skyrim
I wish we could see antiva in the games
+50 Approval
So... Fantasy Spain-Italy ... got it. (Rialto, for example, is a real place in Venice, and may Antivan places have italian names. But there is also a heavy Spanish influence.)
Their Spanish is Influenced by Spain not Latin American Spanish.
Antivan Saturnalia actually sounds like the old Italian Carnivale holiday from Renaissance Venice
there are more than mexican and spanish castillan, but the Antivan accent sounds like some kind of argentinian, a mixture of italian and castillian
Am I the only one who bought the DA 2 item packs? Lol Also is there a possibilty of a weekly or monthly live discussion of all things Dragon Age? Excellent series and great work 😀
Can u ever go to antiva In any of the DA games?
"Antiva is a fictionalized version of a medieval Italian city-state like Venice, and it was originally going to be called Calabria" -da wiki, go read the whole thing plus the speaking and words used are spanish. Google is a good thing and vid is 3years old and our darling is nowa days better with researching skills.
I believe that Antiva is loosely based on Ancient Hispania
It’s formal Castilian/ Italian, which is awesome
I wanna say they use the Castellano dialect but there's this one Antivan merchant dude in DA2 who says Maldición but he didn't lisp the c in the word like a Spaniard would have. Maybe it's a weird mix of dialects?
I know that in Spain, the Spanish speakers there have a lisp and a heavy “ch” sound. And in Latin America, that is rarely heard
Have you thought of Josephine character video?
Antiva is like fucked up in a good way.
I'm not an expert, but I'm from Spain, and I think that Zevran and Josephine have a more Italian accent (or at least it doesn't strike me as a Spanish accent I know of). I think Bioware went with the Spanish from Spain when it comes with to the accents
so if i had enough money to buy all the land in Antiva plus so much left i could pay off any nation or army sent to stop me i could be the ruler there
I hope dragon age 4 be antivan city beautiful shops and other areas and the crows too I can't wait see it
I demand you do one on dragons 🎉
So is Antiva a kingdom or principality?
Ghil Dirthalen - in a nutshell , Antiva = Colonial Caribbean. take the similarities even with the pirates.

Saturnalia, think a cross between Saturnalia and Nothing.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturnalia
Interesting. Saturnalia is taken straight from Roman religion.
