Not exactly. If you're getting the 65% discount for example then you also get that discount on socials. Then you don't pay socials in most cases on investment income so if your income is from dividends it doesn't affect you.
Ah ok. In Italy with its 70 and 90 percent reductions of your assessable base (90 if relocating to the south), apparently the reduction doesn’t apply to socials (of 26 percent). Michael, I am hearing a lot about the Freedom differences in Portugal... Example: Madeira has this qasi-Mandatory Vaccination plus weekly antigen testing just to go to a Bar or Grocery store... Is that true throughout Portugal? Great CONTENT AS USUAL:)
Madeira was the more liberal about the pandemic in Portugal, now they are trying this approach, the rest of the country is more liberal than other european countries, you can see why almost crypto events were in Lisbon.
It is important to note that the Portuguese appreciate national cohesion and, even in our latin way, we like to pull together in situations of national emergency as a community. We also follow the advice of health authorities, civil defence authorities and the government. This means that people who try to politicise medical advice like what happened in the US will not be well regarded. You are still free not to get vaccinated, that is on you, but if you decide not to wear a mask when mask wearing is a rule, you are not going to be well regarded. This comes from the fact that a mask is supposed to protects others and the Portuguese do look after their neighbours and community. Freedom in Portugal (something we learnt from living without it) is always attached to responsability and in balance with our other cherished rights.
Video on point. Thanks Michael. I may add that Portuguese is a difficult language to learn and speak relative to, I guess, Spanish. However, Arabic may be 10-100X tougher to grasp! Though at both destinations, one can easily get by speaking only English. Honestly, I am more biased currently towards Portugal because of their approach in the treatment of crypto assets. I vote for Portugal, not necessarily Lisbon. Maybe Porto, the Silver Coast, or Açores ☺
The UAE does seem a nice place to live. But the lack of permenant ways to live in the UAE makes it not as attractive to me. It always feels like you have to actively fight to have the right to stay in the UAE but not in Portugal. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Great video Michael! I am interested in a type of investment visa to have acces to USA even for 3 months every year. What country/investment visa would you recomend(i want to mention that i'm a citizen in eastern Europe)? Thanks and have a great day!!!
Great video. I am a Dubai resident, and happened to receive my D7 visa for Portugal. Very curious on what's the pros and cons living between both places.
Thanks for this video. The freedom in Portugal seems like more of a draw - as well, I think the air quality may be better (less pollution) vs. Dubai's hot smoggy summers. You mentioned some interesting points about cyrpto tax advantages and banking in Portugal, too. Portugal has my vote :)
Hi! I literally moved here (Dubai - greetings from Marina!) for a month because of your videos (among others) to test it out and then potentially move my business (and myself) in Q1 2022. Which bank in Dubai would you recommend for crypto banking (basically onramp to exchanges) for private and corporate?
Might be best to just get a bank account in another country for interfacing with crypto exchanges. And, of course, you'll want a bank that'll be willing to serve as an "off ramp" as well as an "on ramp"
@@MichaelRosmer I like it a lot. Feels like a city of future and it's very inspiring to see so much people working on their ideas. Talking about people, they are super friendly and welcoming. In general, Dubai seems to run like a business. (which I like) it has a CEO and he sets 10 year goals and works towards it. Yes, the weather is perfect now. I'm in any case thinking of spending summers in Europe. This is where another question comes in. Where do you suggest buying a summer house in Europe? The problem with property is that it can make you tax liable in that country if you own property that you want to use. E.g. Germany or Croatia. It does not matter that you don't live there most of the year.
Lisbon of those two. I spent 3 years in the the middle east in the past. Mainly in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and they left a bad taste in my mouth. I have never been to Lisbon but Portugal is one of few crypto friendly countries.
I been doing some reading, currently the political climate of Portugal is losing its once favoured majority. Could this mean higher taxes? Love to visit it sometime.
Dubai vs Lisbon comparison?? 😀 Definitely Lisbon (even though rental costs are getting steeper) any day!! Quality of life, people, food, general attractiveness, Portugal's pro immigration & well definited path for citizenship, etc, etc. On the other hand Dubai has only Tax incentives to offer & nothing much other than that. However, there's an unwritten special privileges for caucasian expats, who are treated quite royally even it requires conciously undermining the dignity of others incl. the wealthy local Arabs, or even wealthy Asian expats!! To boot, climate is also horrible in Dubai.
I think you'd have to get a golden visa in order to be able to spend just 5 months per year in Portugal.... and that means spending 500,000 Euros on a house that's located some distance from the coast (new rules go into effect in January). If you get a D7 visa, for example, you have to spend 6 months per year in Portugal in order to retain the visa.
You talk a lot about banks, but frankly I only need them to pay for utilities. Could you please do a video on international brokers suitable for the low/0 tax countries? Great content btw🙏
I'm pretty sure that that isn't true. The deal is either of the following: (a) 6 months continual residence in Portugal, with no interruptions, or (b) 8 months in Portugal, with small interruptions. [That being said, one can travel from Portugal to another Schengen country without having to get one's passport stamped].
@@MichaelRosmer What is the tax rate and how do I get a tax credit? Is the tax credit rate the same as the tax rate so I end up not having to pay anything? Thank you for your reply :-)
Would really appreciate how you would handle banking for crypto if living in Dubai? My wife and I actually don’t mind the weather in Dubai year round as we have visited even during the hottest months.
So many people complain about Portugal cold winters and especially in Porto because many houses are damp and don’t have heaters and they have problems with mold
I’m from Canada… I spent December, January and February in Portugal (an hour drive North, on the coast)… I found it to be quite balmy! It really is perspective!
Well Michael is Canadian, so why are you trying to school him on cold weather? The concept we are working with here is: "in relation to each other". For example, hell is relatively chilly compared to Dubai.
@@MichaelRosmer Psycologically it feels like people go to their place of safety if they feel under threat - be it physically, emotionally or financially. Plus peer pressure - why leave your home now when the big bad wolf is there? We were talking about this today as the rental choices here are limited currently and we don't want anyone else arriving!!! ; )
A very smart way to promote Lisbon by this Dubai comparisons although they are in a different league, Actually they don't even play the same sport. Dubai is years ahead and catching up with Singapore as both already thrown away Hong Kong and catching up with london and NY. Nice try though,
Hey I'm confused. Im a project manager and make 100k is it possible to be taxed very little in Portugal? So far I've read a bit it and it seems like including socials it would still be fairly high tax but not as high as the regular. Is it possible to get 0 on this? How would I do that?
Hey! Please do not come to Portugal for the following reasons. 1. Life is so slow paced & people are very lazy, you will have to wait long for basic things to be done, bureaucracy adds salt to injury! 2. Most of the houses do not want to rent and they are in miserable conditions, house owners just want to sell it at unreasonable price, better invest in a index fund that would give better result! 3. Houseold conditions are poor, search about it. Most of the Portugal's housing conditions are poor, dont leave your beautiful house in to live in a downgraded one in Portugal. 4. Portugal is heavily reliable on foreigners money, they will just use you as a cash cow nothing more. 5. Customer service is poor, the wages are low & the lazy culture leads to 0 customer service. 6. Poor public transportation, most areas are not connected by public transport and look like ghost towns. 7. Africans & Indians never apply, they will not rent you a house, they will be sweet on your face, and snitch behind your back. But yes, buy it from them. Buy miserable house, on a location without public transport or no "human activity". Thats what makes them happy, I AM WARNING YOU ALL AGAIN, DO NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP & AVOID VISITING PORTUGAL!
The big thing is how repressive are the authorities regarding the virus thing. If you can’t go anywhere without telling everyone your medical status with passports face masks etc that’s a no go zone.
@@OffshoreCitizen There needs to be a stronger case for relocation besides just a "golden" visa. Portugal and Greece may have attractive tax/residency programs but with the waves for repression sweeping across the EU moving from a legacy state like Canada means you may gain some temporary tax benefits but quality of life is hardly better.
Great video Michael… I most definitely am not interested in a life in a country like Dubai. I value personal freedom over everything else. Portugal has been my goal for the past few years, in any case.
It's funny you know, personal freedom has been such a strange thing the last few years. The US is "land of the free" with the highest rates of incarceration. Dubai people might say is less free but has been one of the only places that has been almost entirely lockdown free. So then where is really free?
@@MichaelRosmer No one is free of distractions, conditioning and emotional attachments. Maybe in a way one is most free all alone in a Super Max prison with a good meditation practice, Spinoza's Ethics, Kant's CPR, some Schopenhauer, the Mahabharata. But, I don't think most people want freedom. Like Pascal's lonely room, real freedom is terrifying. However, I know a guy in Portugal who shares my taste for this stuff. So, accompanied by the miserable hope that I can and should be happier than I am in this singular moment here in -9 Montréal, that's where I would want to go :)

I am a Portuguese citizen. One thing I would like to point out, which you dont speak about in this video, is the cost of owning a vehicle in Lisbon (and across Portugal, by the way). Unless you live in the center of Lisbon, which would arguably be cheaper than living in Dubai, you need a car to move around. Taxes applied to vehicles in Portugal are extremely high! A new car bought in Portugal can cost a 50% extra when compared to Spain, for example. Additionally, taxes applied to gas are also extremely high, which makes it even more costly to own a car...

The fact that citizenship is a NO GO area in Dubai regardless of how long you live or contribute to the economy says some thing about a country's attitude towards non natives..unreliable !!
I was comparing the two recently. Dubai is definitely the cleaner way in terms of taxes, Portugal is the place where you have more culture and can feel more easily home. I would take the wild card and go for Spain. Sure you pay taxes but it is fair, 15% corporate during the first 3 years and then 25% and cap gains in the low to mid 20's. Yes there is a wealth tax but it does not apply to the first 600k euro of your personal home and if you bring your capital into a corporation to invest with you are exempt on that as well.
I think you're the first person I've heard say taxes in Spain are fair. I'd, say taxes in Spain are terrible. The numbers you've given neglect the personal taxes taking money out of the company after paying corporate. The tax department there are also terrible, although thankfully not that on the ball. Best to stay off the Spanish radar where taxes are concerned in most cases, though I love the country.
@@MichaelRosmer Yes on the surface you are right. However, it all depends on which specific loopholes you use, what type of income you are getting and how much you are taking out of the corporation. For example, someone making 500k euro a year and taking out a 100k salary will pay in most western European countries around 50% tax on the 100k that is taken out and 20%-25% on the 400k that is left in the company, bringing the total tax rate to 26%-30% (that is without using any loophole or treaty). Furthermore, many European countries have very specific loopholes. In Belgium for example, there are (on top of amazing tax treaties) ways to pay rates from 0% to 15% on money that is earned in ones personal name! 0% is the capital gains tax if you do not trade too actively, 15% is the tax on intellectual property (on which no social is to be paid) up to around $90k a year. Spain has the Beckham law and I am sure that there are some other loopholes to bring the total tax rate down a bit. But yes I agree with you 100% for when someone is making 500k a year and wants to take out a lot of money to get a nice house, car and other toys and cannot use loopholes or treaties. Furthermore, many of these loopholes and treaties that I am mentioning are probably in a fragile state..
Lisbon is very nice and easy to leave, imagine you want to leave Dubai, need to get on a plane first and with the current BS measures this isn't really a pick nick now, is it ... unscientific invasive tests, all the theatre, the high cost: in Portugal you can just drive out ... France, Spain, Italy just a drive away ... The stupid measures are killing Dubai, its reputation and investments ..
That’s actually quite a good idea! What are you mostly interested in when you say more conservative? I haven’t lived there, so I don’t have a first hand experience but I’ve been there multiple times. It’s definitely not as popular as Dubai (yet).

Tough choice. I've only been to Portugal once for a couple of weeks. That was about 15 years ago. Dubai I've been to half a dozen times in the past 5 years. I like the idea of dividing time between the two to take advantage of the best weather times. And I suppose one could easily tweak their tax residence as appropriate as their income evolves over years. I feel like one could get tired of Dubai. It is fun and dynamic, especially if you have the disposable income. However, I feel like one could find a spot in Portugal that could better feel like "home". Dubai seems to attract people for a season of their lives, so it doesn't feel quite as much like it has its own soul. Obviously I am speaking from the perspective of Westerner as there are Emiratis who have generational ties to the area. I am curious about the current response to the virus. Though you can find official policy of each place online, it would be interesting to hear about the nuances from someone there. I remain cautious of the vax given the mounting medical evidence. I will be leaving Canada next year, due in part to taxation, but also in part to the extreme erosion of personal freedoms. I don't want to jump from the proverbial pan into the fire, so high on my list of requirements will be a place where the vax agnostic are not treated like second class citizens.
Freedom of speech Portugal is also a much better choice. if you speak/text something about UAE royal family and ruling communities, you may be jailed and gone in a very short time. Dubai also has a outrageous telecommunication charge. Internet tariff is typically 5x more expensive than other countries, Whatsapp, Facebook voice is blocked every where.
The real question is, what Dubai has to offer besides a good payed job? i mean the city was built for cars, cause people cant walk during the day, too hot, no natural beauty, very closed mind people, and on top of that everything is so expensive!!
I'd choose Portugal for the summer, and Dubai for the winter. It's good to keep in mind that life in Dubai is probably about 10x more expensive than life in Portugal :D
Dubai is horrible! I lived there for 5 years and will never EVER go back again, not even for a visit. I think Qatar, Bahrain and Kish are more ideal places in Persian Gulf.
I’ve lived in Portugal for almost 10 years. The absolute worse experience of my life. I’ve never come across such a closed up society, people avoiding one another, barely talking to one another, cold as ice and arrogant. They treat women like under humans. Flee, and go live somewhere else.
I agree I even prefer Malta in comparison even with the grey listing and construction I left Portugal and went to Malta. I am now in South Africa but I am also a citizen of Portugal but no way I am going back there. I will take my chances in crime infested Johannesburg but I prefer it than dealing with the mentality in Portugal.
@@tw9419 Lots of cat calling and no I don't dress provocatively. I have lived in Malta, visited Turkey, Spain, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Serbia, France, UAE, Egypt, Bulgaria, UK, Mozambique, Reunion, Mauritius, Lebanon, New Zealand and USA and only encountered that sort of behaviour in Portugal both in Lisbon and Porto! I am a citizen of Portugal too so I also understand what they say no not a good experience. I prefer to stay in South Africa or try my luck again in some other place in Europe but Portugal after dealing with that. No thanks!

Yeah banks in Dubai aren't crypto friendly we use foreign banks for crypto on and off (unless you use local OTC, which is fine) then transfer to UAE
How do you like it so far? You've chosen a good time of year.
What about using a forex/crypto broker for payouts instead of an exchange?
Lisbon of those two. I spent 3 years in the the middle east in the past. Mainly in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and they left a bad taste in my mouth. I have never been to Lisbon but Portugal is one of few crypto friendly countries.
What are your major complaints about Saudi Arabia and Kuwait?
Plus the massive enviromental issues, the sewage system, the new slaves used to built those skyscrapers...nasty city Dubay
I am living in Dubai since 1987
What can you tell us about the life in Dubai?😄

My dream is to live in Lisbon 5 months and in Dubai 7 months , this way I enjoy the nice weather and avoid taxes

You mentioned 28% capital gains taxes in Portugal, isn’t it 0% under NHR?
My understanding is that dividends are 0%, but capital gains are 28% even under NHR.
D7 actually requires 8 months per year to stay. (16 in 24)
8 months to keep your visa? Or you mean to be qualified for citizenship?
I'm pretty sure that that isn't true. The deal is either of the following: (a) 6 months continual residence in Portugal, with no interruptions, or (b) 8 months in Portugal, with small interruptions. [That being said, one can travel from Portugal to another Schengen country without having to get one's passport stamped].
If my only source of income is $2,000 USD per month from Social Security in the USA, does Portugal tax that if I become a resident in Portugal??
Yes they do but the rate will be quite low and you'll get a tax credit
@@MichaelRosmer What is the tax rate and how do I get a tax credit? Is the tax credit rate the same as the tax rate so I end up not having to pay anything? Thank you for your reply :-)
What are the minimum stay requirements for the NHR program? You mentioned the d7 and golden visa program but not the NHR.
NHR isn't a residency status it's a tax status so it's just for if you're a tax resident
nhr is a tax regime you apply for once you have residence visa. Gold visa not avail anymore, only D7 passive income visa.
Would really appreciate how you would handle banking for crypto if living in Dubai? My wife and I actually don’t mind the weather in Dubai year round as we have visited even during the hottest months.
Thanks for the suggestion, we'll see what we can do!
Could you see yourself living in Dubai?
We set up clients with accounts outside of Dubai in other parts of the world for off ramping and then transfer to local banks
""When it gets chilly in Lisbon..." Hahahahahahahahahahaha...
I can't stop laughing when people talk about Portugal having cold weather.
It’s all about perspective, right? 😂
It certainly can get cold
What do you like personally?
I’d definitely choose UAE over Portugal.
I’d be interested as to what you think of Istanbul vs Dubai?
Great suggestion I'll have to do a video on that.
Dubai is much more polished than Istanbul.
Yes! Great topic. Also how crypto is taxed in Turkey.
I cant see way, everything is fake in Dubai....
Will a recession make it more likely or less likely that more people will relocate from their current country (Retirees, nomads, expats etc etc)?
My guess is less likely but it depends if there's loss of services locally and where else things go down
@@MichaelRosmer Psycologically it feels like people go to their place of safety if they feel under threat - be it physically, emotionally or financially. Plus peer pressure - why leave your home now when the big bad wolf is there? We were talking about this today as the rental choices here are limited currently and we don't want anyone else arriving!!! ; )
Hi if you have Portuguese TRC card can you live in UAE?work there?
A very smart way to promote Lisbon by this Dubai comparisons although they are in a different league, Actually they don't even play the same sport. Dubai is years ahead and catching up with Singapore as both already thrown away Hong Kong and catching up with london and NY. Nice try though,
Yes! Portugal is on the league of democracy and fredom...
D7 Stay requirements Portugal? I think it might be more than 6 months per annum.
It's 6 months (although I can't say with 100% certainty that the "line in the sand" is 180 days, rather than 183 days).
@@dlukton I've looked on a few immigration legal sites and it talks about 16 months stay but for the length of the D7 (first two years).
its 6 months for D7
Thats what makes them happy,
I AM WARNING YOU ALL AGAIN, DO NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP & AVOID VISITING PORTUGAL!
The big thing is how repressive are the authorities regarding the virus thing. If you can’t go anywhere without telling everyone your medical status with passports face masks etc that’s a no go zone.
Unfortunately, this is how things are in many countries nowadays.
Portugal is going in that direction too. This socialist government is destroying the country.
How about Hong Kong vs dubai
Dubai introduced taxes on companies.
Starting June 2023
We've made a video covering all the details. Have you seen it? ☺
@@OffshoreCitizen thank u.
Sorry but this video was made for people who can’t google or something? Like i’m interested in the financial expect, specifically tax & living cost. And freelancers / EU citizens. There are a lot of fanboys in the comments, but new subscribers would’t click on this video to hear to talk about the weather and drug policies
That's actually a very good point. Cost of transportation can add up to quite a bit. How's public transportation?

Which one would you choose?
I had no idea Spain’s taxes are better than Portugal
Also, a ZEC company is a good solution for someone with a business with a few employees. 4% corporate tax rate and you are in the wonderful Spain.
Food is better in Lisbon tbh and at a much much lower price ...
Best comperison
Lisbon is very nice and easy to leave, imagine you want to leave Dubai, need to get on a plane first and with the current BS measures this isn't really a pick nick now, is it ... unscientific invasive tests, all the theatre, the high cost: in Portugal you can just drive out ... France, Spain, Italy just a drive away ... The stupid measures are killing Dubai, its reputation and investments ..
Michael. Could you do a video on the more conservative Abu Dhabi, as not all 0% taxers are raging Dubai liberals. Many thanks.

Dubay is a complete fake place, a absolutely disgrace
Freedom of speech Portugal is also a much better choice. if you speak/text something about UAE royal family and ruling communities, you may be jailed and gone in a very short time. Dubai also has a outrageous telecommunication charge. Internet tariff is typically 5x more expensive than other countries, Whatsapp, Facebook voice is blocked every where.
The real question is, what Dubai has to offer besides a good payed job? i mean the city was built for cars, cause people cant walk during the day, too hot, no natural beauty, very closed mind people, and on top of that everything is so expensive!!
