We are making our way up "north" from South Carolina on our US east coast road trip! 🚗 Being from Germany, Phil was surprised by a few things regarding infrastructure, cities and universities! 🚧🏫🚦 Did anything in this video surprise you?
Who should come to New England! New England is a northeastern region of the United States comprising the states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. It's known for its Colonial past, Atlantic coastline, changing autumn foliage and forested mountains. Boston, Massachusetts, the region’s hub, pre-dates the American Revolution, and its Freedom Trail passes sites that were critical to the nation’s founding.
I’m surprised Phil didn’t realize that most College & University campuses in the US are gorgeous with nice architecture (old & contemporary), great museums, nice sports facilities, and lots of green space / gardening. Where does he think all that tuition money goes!? 😂 Princeton University (Ivy League school) in the town I grew up has an annual endowment of $26.6billion……. and it goes up just about every year. That’s roughly $3,159,520.13 per student per year 😅…hence why Princeton is essentially a “pay what you can” university. Anyway, come visit my boyfriend and I in Brooklyn!
Yes. What surprised me the most, was that it resembled California City’s in many ways & suck wide roads down town type areas. We don’t do that much in California. Maybe in San Francisco
My Aunt and Uncle lived in the Raleigh/Durham area. Beautiful part of the country. Haven’t been there in years. Couple hours to the mountains to the west and the Outer Banks to the east. Perfect.
Very different! A unique trip on it's own way. Highly recommend making california, Oregon, and washington all as separate trips. Thought we could go the whole west coast but only made it through California in a week and it felt like we had so much more to explore.
@@kevincryan7220 He probably has an international license, as many people in Europe do.(In Germany you could choose quite a few countries to drive to and be there in a couple of hours.)
You have visited Raleigh where we are currently living and we are a family from the Bremen (Germany) area! If we had known, that you are visiting Raleigh, we would have shown you around!!!!!
I'm impressed, you really should do more video's like this one. I am not able to travel so I've to watch youtube etc to see what is going on in the wide world that I never will see for real, so add more of this !! I enjoyed it.
As someone who lives in Raleigh I can definitely agree that it’s not a touristy city, but there are a ton of great restaurants and things to drive to in fairly close proximity
I was in Raleigh once for two nights and both restaurants we ate at were absolutely fantastic. Wish I recall their names but heard there are even more now.
Fun video. I enjoyed it. Hope you's visit Princeston, Cape May, Arbury Park, Point Pleasant, Jersey City(NJ) Philadelphia, Gettysburg, Pittsburg(PA) Columbia University, NYU, some more sites in NYC(NY) Yale, New Haven, Hartford(CT) MIT, Harvard, Boston(MA)
Boy, I hope you took the opportunity to visit the Science and Nature museum in Raleigh. For a free museum, it's very impressive. You walked right in front of it.
There are places in the Pennsylvania countryside where a local German dialect is spoken. It’s related to Pfaalzisch. You should check it out; they are famous for their food so it’s right up your ally.
Thanks for the small trip. I did just once a roadtrip in California. And I love to see all the small things. I had so much fun to see small villages and the normal life.
Love this video! My family and I are taking a road trip from Texas to Myrtle Beach, SC at the end of the month. Our favorite place to eat in South Carolina (and surrounding states) is Bojangles 😋 really good fried chicken!
You were walking through Oakwood, which is a historic neighborhood. I used to live on Jones Street. The houses in that neighborhood are very expensive.
It's too bad you missed Chapel Hill. The campus there is much larger and even more beautiful than Duke. When is college, I often did research in their library.
If you want old European like city go to St. Augustine in Florida. It's the oldest European settled city in North America. It was founded in 1565. I finally went to Spain 3 yrs ago and it reminded me of St. Augustine.
I'm a truck driver in Utah and there is tyre debris on the side of the highway here as well. Most of it looks like commercial vehicle tires. The rear tires are typically retreads then that peel off or explode because the driver may not have watched the condition of their tires.
You picked one of the most beautiful neighborhoods to walk through in Raleigh. Most of those homes are over 100 years old built from about 1850's to 1940's. Motorcycle Helmets are required in NC. That Church on Duke campus is called Duke Chapel. A Methodist church. It is so beautiful inside and out.
Trucks tend to blow tires like that and because they have so many they don't necessary need to be replaced right away. They do clean them up but there are just a lot of trucks in the US so they can't clean them all up immediately.
The tricycle thing is called a slingshot. You can find them for sale at motorcycle places. In the mountains of north Carolina you can rent them. Popular near the NC/ Tennessee border. If you go from Cherokee, NC to Gatlinburg Tennessee. Best way to go is over the parkway. At the top of mountain near Clingmans dome is a pullover. You can straddle the NC/ Tennessee state line. At the other end of parkway leads you straight into Gatlinburg Tennessee. From there a lot of people go to Pigeon Forge. Home of Dolly Parton and her theme park Dollywood. Lots of things to do.
If you make it up to Michigan we have a LOT of German heritage here. I think something like 25% of the state population has German ancestry. Frankenmuth “Little Bavaria” is a popular tourist destination but there are tons of places around the state that boast non-German fun too.
All states have contracts with companies who clean up the debris along the highways and to also do things like mow the grass. Those contracts tended to be suspended when the lock downs started last year. In my state (Louisiana) the contracts resumed relatively recently.
such things are not that comon here and if than people do not care ... like seriously Europe is FULL of these where you just take them and leave them somewhere and as they were pretty new in 2018 some kids in Paris made the news for trowing them into the local river ... what the fuck?
Omg, you are going to DC?! Would've loved to show you guys around but have fun! Hope you guys enjoy your east coast tour. Thanks again for all of your videos!! They're so entertaining ☺️
Ya'll should have gone to nearby (to Raleigh) Chapel Hill. Very funky cool town. Also Charlotte NC has an impressive downtown. It's like you skipped the cool towns and went to the boring ones.
When are you in Boston? I’d love to bump into youse two! And PLEASE stop by Regina Pizzeria, Ernesto’s Pizzeria (both in the North End), Penang in Chinatown and Uburger near Fenway Park. And you could do an entire video just on bakery items from Clear Flour in Brookline.!
Did you guys hear about the terrible flood that just happened in west germany? I hope you guys didn't live over there, i love you guys aa Im trying to learn german myself so I hope I can do well in my self studies.
Fortunately, the flooding did not hit the area of Germany where we lived. Our families are safe and our hearts go out to everyone who is affected by the flooding! 💜
Yeah I heard that around 100 people in total went missing and 19 people died. It was very bad in a city just 7km away from me and my own city was halfway closed so people wouldn't drive their car into the flooded area + they had issues with the waterworks from the flood so they put on a emergency reserve of water and asked citizen to refrain from using water if possible since they can't deliver as much water now as we might use. It was pretty crazy tho
next trip drive a truck. I've found that a Bubba mobile doesn't get pulled over for speeding. Keep an eye out, you'll notice you wont see trucks pulled over. just got back from DC, 4 1/2 hour drive back home too 8 hours. 95 under construction, parallel to that US 1 under construction. If you stop to eat in DC don't do the tourist Georgetown thing, go to U street area, Adams Morgan
Have you guys traveled through Tennessee? The mountains are beautiful. Many caves and waterfalls to see as well. I’m from the Nashville area and the city is really worth checking out.
I visited my penfriend who was studying in Durham and we travelled to the coast over Thanksgiving weekend. I was just like, "can't you drive faster...." and there were so many dead animals by the road side!
I live in NC but in the foothills, in a town called Pilot Mountain! I have a state park basically in my back yard. But just so you know, we have a helmet law here so when riding a motorcycle you have to wear a helmet if on the road! :) I lived in Cary which is right by Durham. It's so much fun diwn there!

Duke's campus is beautiful for sure, but it's too bad that you missed the other two major campuses in the Triangle: NC State in Raleigh & UNC in Chapel Hill.
Next time yall come to the US, make sure you stop and visiting Virginia like Richmond, Williamsburg via Hampton Roads area and the Shenandoah National Park via Charlottesville with numerous of Wine vineyards
If you come up to my neck of the woods in Pennsylvania take him to Shady Maple Smorgasbord. That would blow him away plus he'd get to see the Amish and Mennonite. Hershey isn't far from there as well. We also have Gettysburg in the south central part of the state or Knoebels amusement park up in coal country near Centralia.
"mennonite" are not uncomon in Germany so he would allready know these people. I hope you refer to the same people as I do because in Germany these people are a Christian minority where women wear skirts all around the year and are not allowed to do makeup or cut their hair and they read the bible all the time like at least once a week and stuff. They also sometimes tend to have big families. I was friend to a girl who's family is and she invited me to her bday as I was 8 or so and her stepmom made us read the bible for 1 full hour. I also had a girl in my class who has 11 sisters and 1 brother and she was heavly against her familie's religious belives so she menaged to get them to let her do whatever she wants or else she wouldn't be happy and so she allways wore pants as the only one in her family and got a haircut as the only one in her family. My town also had a church for them. I hope if its really the same kind of religion than we have those people in Germany or else I'm sorry if I thought of something else with a similiar name
Phil in America the roads are cleaned up very frequently but there is so much debris that it is too much to keep up an no money to do. I call all the tire debris on the road: dead alligators. LOL 😮
Welcome to The States, Phil. I love hearing his perspective. The whole country is like Europe. Each state has it's own culture, terrain, accent and even unique foods. I love Phil's enthusiasm and excitement when he sees American stuff. Oh and yeah, some schmucks ruined it for everyone by driving away from the station w/out paying. That's why you have to pay for the gasoline first before pumping.
I hope you continue to travel and I hope you hit up more Mexican food. What you found looks good but I'm betting you'll find better. Are you thinking of going to more States?
I've lived in Raleigh for 20 years. Good place to live and work, but definitely not a great place for tourism. We have many interesting things to do for residents, but nothing I would want to visit as a tourist. Chapel Hill is a much more beautiful downtown area for seeing lovely architecture, cute shops and interesting people-watching.
I'm from The States and I've never heard of that. Are parts of the road better than others and you have the choice to pay to ride on the better part for more money or what?
How far up the coast will you guys go? If you stop in Philly, I hope we make a good impression. I have the same car as Deana and when she had to add oil, I had a feeling of "Same girl, same". I have 201k miles on mine, so I can't bark much about adding a quart or so every 1500 miles. Hopefully the car is okay to not ruin your trip. ❤
Growing up in California, the highways in the south and Midwest always seemed slightly foreign to me. The highways in California are more compact. They don’t have those big grassy medians or grass embankments on the side, at least by the coast. Interstates in the Central Valley do have those big medians but that’s it. I’m shocked at all the tires and other crap on the road. At least in the part of California I live in, you would not see big pieces litter like that on the road. You might see a plastic bag or a few cigarette butts. Maybe it’s different in other parts of California
Everytime Phil says Durham it sound like Dürüm (that Turkish wrap you often get in the same places where you get your Döner Kebap)... I really think you spoiled me with your food videos... haha And is it possible that Deana cut her hair ? It looked shorter in the end of the video.
True, the cops will nail you with speeding tickets like crazy in Virginia. My Dad and I got pulled over and got a ticket while on my Dad's motorcycle in Virginia by a Virginia State Trooper.
The setup of where you go a couple of blocks over and you're in a residential area is absolutely WONDERFUL. You dont have people living ontop of each other like a lot of European countries (when I say European countries I'm talking about the continent not the EU).
No your not in Europe but remember America is 90% European and Germanic tribe make up about 44M Deutsch-Amerikaner or about 150m Germanic people worldwide.
I'm pretty sure you can put an entire car together with all the crap parts on the side of the road, if you keep driving long enough. It won't run, but it will be a full car.
Also very sad you didnt stop in Richmond so much more than what you saw in NC..sorry NC my rocket science side of the family lives in Raleigh...I'll give you the Outer Banks
drive in NJ, or especially NY, they love to give tickets also. NY lil worse. ma ne ganze naze gefahren von j up to bufallo to see the falls. no chance to speed alle paar miles theres been a cop car.

Everytime Phil says Durham it sound like Dürüm (that Turkish wrap you often get in the same places where you get your Döner Kebap)... I really think you spoiled me with your food videos... haha
And is it possible that Deana cut her hair ? It looked shorter in the end of the video.
True, the cops will nail you with speeding tickets like crazy in Virginia. My Dad and I got pulled over and got a ticket while on my Dad's motorcycle in Virginia by a Virginia State Trooper.
The setup of where you go a couple of blocks over and you're in a residential area is absolutely WONDERFUL. You dont have people living ontop of each other like a lot of European countries (when I say European countries I'm talking about the continent not the EU).
disagreed. I like row houses and apartment, which seem to be missing. Mixed use development is awesome.
No your not in Europe but remember America is 90% European and Germanic tribe make up about 44M Deutsch-Amerikaner or about 150m Germanic people worldwide.
East coast really is different but we also can't wait to drive through the whole country!!!
Grüße aus Virginia, ZeGermans
Where I live in US u can pump up ur gas first and than go pay
Texas has speed limits of 85mph in some parts!!
This German is not impressed ;-)
Nice video
Phil I hope your family is safe form the Floods & Deluge happening in Deutschland?! 🫂
My family and friends are safe. They had a lot of rain, and fortunately the flooding didn't hit our area of Germany.
I'm pretty sure you can put an entire car together with all the crap parts on the side of the road, if you keep driving long enough. It won't run, but it will be a full car.
OMG you lived in durham!
Also very sad you didnt stop in Richmond so much more than what you saw in NC..sorry NC my rocket science side of the family lives in Raleigh...I'll give you the Outer Banks
❤️❤️❤️
Is it just me or does Deana look a bit annoyed most of the video? Hope you guys had a great time though :)
For the most part US cities look similar. They all seem to follow a grid pattern. NYC is a bit different.
You are in my neck of the woods
drive in NJ, or especially NY, they love to give tickets also. NY lil worse. ma ne ganze naze gefahren von j up to bufallo to see the falls. no chance to speed alle paar miles theres been a cop car.
Route 66 is incredibly overrated.
I prefer Interstate 10 that runs through southern New Mexico and Arizona.
amazing. The southwest is amazing and worth several visits.
Great video as always guys.
Too bad you won’t be here for March Madness.
What's your favorite place in the US?
