was there in 2013.. we were on a coach trip from Osaka... buy yes lots of people everywhere... but its worth it to see traditional Japanese temples and architechture. but warning for people who are not that mobile... its a big steep hill/steps to the top view! Im not sure if you are still out there.. but Himeji Castle further out past Kobe is very good. and if you get a chance try to visit a Shinto shrine area... I saw the Ise Shrine, but this one is the most serene "park" in woodland.. but its due east from Osaka on the other side of that peninsula..
Great video! We have just returned from Japan and our last stop before flying home was Kyoto (just a few days ago - we were probably in Kyoto around the same time). We experienced the crowds exactly like how you depicted it in your video. You are also right, the overtourism truly spoiled some of the most beautiful placed in Japan for us. I also cannot help but imagine if you are a local truly wanting to pray at one of the shrines, imagine that you have to fight through the hoards of tourists just so that you can go pray! Finally, not sure if you are still in the area, but if you are, you will enjoy a visit to Kibune. It still has tourists but not nearly as many. Extremely beautiful and especially if you decide to walk the 2km up and down from the train station to the Kibune village.
I totally understand your stress level was higher with all the people around you. I have the same problem ( the crowded it gets, the more I feel more panicked and it gets worse with each year) I always want to visit Japan but I think I would avoid some tourist spots due to the mass of people. I really enjoy your videos 🙏🫶
Honestly, when we went off of some of the popular streets, it was quite nice! We always hear about the "overtourism" in Kyoto is lately, and as tourists visiting Japan for the first time, we felt it mostly just on those streets and sights. A majority of the time one or two streets over is very quite and nice!
@@DeanaandPhil I am a tiny bit jealous because I would LOVE to try original Japanese food. I live in Sweden and in my area is Thai food/ Asian-style more common but I have not found yet any “just “ Japanese restaurant like I had before in Hamburg, Germany. Enjoy your time in Japan and take always one bite more for me 😘🤣
Used to watch your Germany related content a lot when i was back in my home country planing my move to Germany, now I’ve been here for almost a year and am planing a one month Asia trip(Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand) and your videos couldn’t be more helpful, thanks for all the tips and info!!🫶🏼🫶🏼
I think you guys were spoiled by the pandemic. You got used to empty places. You just need to take a breath and get over it because guess what; you're tourists too. The place was beautiful and the crowds gave it energy.
I think a popular destination is simply what you make of it. Even in Kyoto there are so many other shrines and temples on the outskirts of the city, particularly near Arashiyama, where there are hardly any tourists. In my four years in Japan Ive been to Kyoto several times, and I always enjoyed it thoroughly. Of course, Fushimi Inari-Taisha and Kiyomizu-Dera are THE two attractions in Kyoto that everyone wants to see, with the Golden Pagoda a close third. They are bound to be busy, but Kyoto has many quiet, highly enjoyable areas, too.
Like Deana, I am not a fan of crowds too much of the wrong kind of energy for my psyche. Love the architecture of old Japan, it’s esthetically pleasing to the senses. Shushi looked really tasty, I only cringed when you said mackerel, too strong and greasy for my taste and apparently yours. Wish it was less crowded, maybe there is a time of year that would be better? Thanks for taking us along, always great to see you 🏯⛩🍣💕👍
I really like how you lower your voice in a quite place like the sushi restaurant. It's a very nice behaviour. The price for the sushi was still cheap compared to fresh sushi in Germany. It also looked very delicious. And I laughed about the Baden-Württemberg-Sticker. :D They are everywhere!
Hotels in north of Kyoto station are a little expensive than hotels in south of Kyoto station. And regarding tourists place, Only several famous for foreigners are super crowed such as Kiyomizu dera, Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kinkakuji, Nishiki market, bumboo forests. However, there are so many temples and shrines where are not famous among foreigners but famous and popular among Japapese. And those kind of places are less crowed and less foreign tourists.
I appreciate that you needed to be respectful to others in the sushi restaurant. Tourist aren't always very respectful. You did sound like that SNL PBS sketch about Schweddy Balls though. :)
Nishiki market is amazing....not stressful at all....chill out guys. The variety of food is amazing. And the best place to visit in Kyoto. Never bad mouth Nishiki
Luckily, I live in Japan and went to Kyoto during the pandemic when Japan was closed, and it was so wonderful. When I went to Kiyomizu Dera, there were only about 30 people on the deck. I know I will never experience that again.
I was to Kyoto and Nara in 1989 (also Tokyo). Fortunately, my wife is Japanese, so not only was she familiar with history and where to go but also did not have to deal with everything being in Japanese. Anyway, I remember a lot of tourists but nothing like you experienced. Even some of the temples were pretty empty. In fact, my kids got yelled at by the priest for being too noisy. I do not think I would have enjoyed it as much if we encountered the crowds you did. I was really impressed that the temples I saw were all built hundreds of years ago and they are all held together by interlocking of the framing, no nails or pegs. Lastly, you guys are so fun to watch. Thanks.
I have the same issue with crowds. That is part of the reason that I watch videos like yours. I can visit places vicariously without being in a crowd. Also, I am 6ft tall, 270#, so I would draw a lot of attention in Japan.
I'm fairly sure that I might have left this bit of information on another video, but, here it is again, mostly because Phil seems to have some difficulty in dipping 10:03 . When eating Sushi, it is perfectly acceptable to use your hands as it is actually considered finger food, it is Sashimi that you should eat with chopsticks, I hope this might help someone on their trip to Japan somehow. =^.^=
I am Japanese Canadian and have all wants to visit Japan. But unfortunately, due to mobility issues that is a possibility. I do enjoy your Japan videos so I can experience it through you r eyes.
Touching food together with chopsticks like you did at the beginning of your video is really bad manners in Japan, it takes years of living here to navigate Japanese manners. Informative vid.
Gosh, I feel for the people that live there. Tourism is such a two-edged sword... But this way I can enjoy the place without going there, so thank you for the video! Just wish I could taste the food as well. 😀
What you had there wasn't a cheesecake but a Kasutera (Castella?). Which has its origin in Portugal and this particular one is a Taiwanese Cestella (?) which is a bit more "jiggly" than the normal Japanese one. It's made out of mainly eggs with some sugar and flour etc. - hence Deana's remark about it being so "eggy". 😁 Although the consistency of a Japanese cheescake is very similar to it.
Kyoto is like the Munich of Japan, if that makes sense, i love it. When i was there, there were a lot less people, even though it was during the Gion Matsuri festival in July (not this year). Thing is, it was like 35 °C and 80% humidity, maybe that's why there weren't as many people... And the main station is crazy.
General advise: For food go to those small places that specialize in one dish and where the cook/owner looks to be at least 60. If he looks like 76 and there are half-empty alcohol bottles from the regulars on his backshelf, even better.
I went in March 2020 - just before covid closed the world down! It was more quiet than it has been long before or ever likely to be again. Probably only 10-20% as busy as you witnessed. Our shinkansen carriage was 90% empty from Tokyo to Kyoto. I got nearly all the classic photo ops with zero fuss and nobody else in shot. The big sights will get busy, but so do other world class sights - Eifel tower, Vatican, Tower of London, pyramids etc. If want to see it, then plenty of others will - also Kyoto is a major tourist spot for the Japanese themselves! In any case - I loved it.
I spent my days walking in Kyoto. Less crowds and saw many spots with minimal tourists. I went to the big places later in the day and they were tolerable.
very good video. i live in tokyo. good assessment and honest opinions. But yeah, the crowds are shocking, I stick to the countryside these days. Im a westerner but hate tourists
I am grateful that I was able to experience Kyoto and other famous places in Japan including a climb of Mt. Fuji back in the 1980s and 1990s. How long before Kanazawa and places like that are overrun?
Non tourist area, but out of context. If you are used to walking on mountain trails, the mountain at Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep is a must go hiking area. The trail is void of people, and the risk of imminent death is very real. Small red flags are used as where to go, but can be very confusing, and that the trail has huge gaps, only two planks to traverse, makes it a near death situation. I climbed it half way, and a temple midway saved my life. So, a recommendation for a non tourist area, but don't try it alone, and remember to inform the ranger at the base, that you will try the endeavour. To be honest, if not a professional, only do halfway. Transportation will be available halfway. Good luck. By the way, the two planks situation only happened once, the rest of the trail is ok, but you can get lost. The depth of the two planks situation, maybe 2 metres, so nothing like a 500 m fall, but if alone, not good. Hope you forgive my exaggeration. Anyhow, would be nice to see Deana and Phil trying the climb, of course with guides. They love Thailand, so maybe good content for the channel. The void of people is true, the confusing of where to go is true, the 2 metres gap is true, the temple midway is true- and that, at the very top of the mountain, is located a temple area, soaked in gold, is very real. You can get a taxi, maybe a buss to the zenith. But please take the trail halfway, then you have earned the golden temple.
I was working on something while watching/listening to this episode and when I looked up at 15:18 when Phil said, "I wanna see a big bite here." I went "What the crap!" out loud because the size of that cheesecake took me by surprise. xDDD It's SO HUGE!!!

How do these influencers not realize how annoying they are to other tourists? They make their living off of tourism but ruin it for travelers even in restaurants!
Guys, may I offer some advice? I enjoy your videos but, it may beneficial if you do a bit of background research on things. e.g.: "this type of Chinese/Japanese architecture". Definitely not the same... Then at the temple you saw a "water fixture"...well, it has a meaning/purpose, so it's a bit more than a water fixture. My two cents with all the positive vibes I have. And one tip to eat sushi with the soy sauce on the fish: 1) It is perfectly fine to use your hand instead of chopsticks. It's' easier like that. 2) You grab the chopsticks, turn a nigiri piece on its SIDE. Grab the nigiri like that, sideways. It makes it easier to dip the fish only. Both ways are perfectly acceptable. :)
Kyoto you go to hot springs, the castles, maybe go to a geisha event, do a few kendo lessons, and enjoy the traditional food. There really isn’t much else. Possibly a concert if someone big is in town.
My son and I were in Kyoto in March and it was really ridiculously crowded. Especially in Gion. It was beautiful but I much preferred Nagasaki, Omura, and Sonogi.
Immer besser ein bisschen weiter zu gehen als die paar hundert Meter vom Parkplatz. Die meisten Touris sind zu faul. Bin mir nicht sicher, hattet ihr schon Yakitori?
I do not like the crowds but manly because I HATE people that have to stop every ten feet to take selfies. Why oh why do you have to be in every picture that is taken. If you take a picture of a building or something else you don’t have to prove that you took the picture by being in it, YOU TOOK IT.
I’m laughing. You live in Europe with large crowds. And there’s no way you guys are old. Wasn’t India and Thailand a lot more crowded? Also Korea. Ah well. Happy for you that you get to see Japan.
Everyone around this guy is looking at the beauty around them. This guy is looking into a camera and being totally disrespectful to Everyone around him.
You are dissapointed by the many tourists but your are also one of them. Everyone wants to get to japan because of the weak yen so you can not complain about it in my opinion.
Vloggers like this are part of the problem. They're walking around with selfie sticks or talking into devices taking away from the beauty and making it all about them. Also the endless influencers promotion of these places is upping the dense visitor population. Stop making your videos and ruining the sites for others.
Have you ever been to Kyoto? What are your thoughts?

Sushi is traditionally eaten with your hands. I think that's why you're having an issue dipping it in the soy sauce

Kyoto has been ruined by tourist
Vloggers like this are part of the problem. They're walking around with selfie sticks or talking into devices taking away from the beauty and making it all about them. Also the endless influencers promotion of these places is upping the dense visitor population. Stop making your videos and ruining the sites for others.
Without tourism, Japan will be in a worse financial crisis. Small business are surviving due to over tourism.
Look at this guy. Takes a bite talks into his mic, repeat. This is classic narcissistic behavior
You went to Japan and didn't hook up with abroad in Japan?? For shame you guys 😁😄
I will not eat any raw uncooked fish of any kind , other than Tuna, regardless of how it's prepared and presented . Especially Sushi !!!
