    Great Video, I have always used a 6 or 8 inch auger exclusively for many years (well over 40) This year I noticed that eskimo made a 7 inch, I purchased it and so far I am very impressed with it, I think it will be my all around auger, it seems like a great compromise. Take it easy and enjoy the Hard Water.

    Great Video! Years back i purchased an 8 inch auger and after a few years of use i purchased 7 inch replacement blades by mistake and they worked really well. I keep the 8 inch blades handy but the 7 have been in use for 15 seasons.

    Good review with some nice technical analysis. I once had to explain to a bunch of miners which setup allowed more air flow. One 4 inch dia pipe or two 2 inch dia pipes . That with the best mathematician in our lunchroom with a capacity of no more than 3 digit multiplication.What a task. Didn't know ice fishing could be so complicated

    Loved all your points you talked about in this video. Great info. I use an 8” pistol bit, since most often I set up camp for the weekend when fishing. I already have the drill for the anchors on my hub house, so it just made sense for me. I think for run and gunning, or just doing an afternoon trip, and keeping a light weight sled to get through the woods like you often do, the best answer is a hand auger, and the smallest I can get away with equals less chance of overheating, sweating, and becoming cold.

    If you get the chance you should try a fin-bore manual auger. In my experience it takes way less effort compared to a swede-bore of the same diameter. With the fin-bore the handles are offset, so both arms are used for cutting through the ice and it doesn't require as much downward pressure.

    Its been warm all December and now half way through January and we have had temps in the low 20's at night and above 32 during the day, so not much ice actually not enough to get out on safely. but the freeze up is coming next week! I hear the 8" calling but we hardly see more than 18" of ice this close to the coast and I'm a wimp so 6" auger will be fine I like the idea of two holes and they will be easier to plumb in a foot of ice if I desire a bigger hole. I carry all of my gear in my 45 L back pack.... so need to be light since I can be hiking for 3-4 hours. I use a 4 inch auger... and yes I do struggle with the fish sometimes. But having a lighter and more compact auger is key for me to go further in remote places with all the gear I need (stick stove, cook pot, etc...)

      Same here Eric. I pull all my gear in a small sled, have to scale down where I can. In almost 25 years using a 6" only one trout wouldn't have fit through the hole and since I was using a 2" Swedish Pimple, he came as quite a surprise! I've since given away two 8" augers (one found, one a gift), as they were just gathering dust. There are some lakes I could get away with a 4", have to think about that. Fifty hole days aren't so rare!

    Personally i prefer 8 0r 10 inch , had 6 inch years ago , lost to many fish at the whole . Nothing worse then that , hook gets jammed or cant get his head up the whole . Just my personal preference , I also went to gas powered auger , age being the factor for that , great review on the 2 good job .

      @@jimmyhoffa7935 hope your having a great day , I probably will switch once my gas power stops working . I've had it for about 10 years and every year first or second pull it starts . It's a eskimo and would highly recomend that product . So ya when it's time its something I will definitely look into . Another point is I usually always go with a friend so we share the load 2 sleds . Have a great day , tight lines

    Thanks for the information, do you plan on targeting brook trout this winter season? I have watched a lot of your ice fishing videos and I don't recall any brook trout. Mostly Pike, Lakers and walleye. You're kinda close to the Algoma region which I have heard is good for brook trout. I can imagine the amazing Brooke trout colors against our bleak winter colors would be awesome

    • @LostLakes

      That's a great point, I really should. Brookie fishing is arguably even better here on the north shore of Superior too :)

    I made the mistake of buying a 5” auger for trout this year. My scoop doesn’t fit the hole and it’s next to impossible to turn a big trout’s head into the hole.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aghh yeah the scoop is often forgotten. Mine's a little tight in the 6 so I bent up the edges of the scoop a little (it's metal). It's a huge bummer when you get that big fish though, for sure
