Speaking from entirely painful experience I once zorched a MB when I touched a capacitor with the graphics card I was trying to reseat.
My error was in forgetting to switch off the PSU at both its switch and the socket (I’m in the UK, we can do that).
The sudden acrid smell told me I’d messed up and the MB was indeed toast. Didn’t kill any other components though so lucked out there.
Doubt that’s the issue here but the fact it’s revision 1.2 would indicate something was bad enough they needed to act so it could simply be poor design or component selection at work.
Either way, next up think some air flow investigation could be useful…

I get warry about Gigabyte motherboards changing things on the same board on different versions. I have noticed that on some of their motherboards they change the version and when you check them out they changed the PCB layer count and/or the VRM's and the power stages. on their newer versions they downgrade them but raise the cost.

ESD pfffftttt. Do me a favour, the board was a rev. 1.0. Clearly there were multiple issues that took TWO further revisions to rectify. Sounds to me like your just making excuses for Gigabyte shipping dodgy revision motherboards. Q. Will they RMA a lower revision board and replace it with one that actually works as designed either before or after it's died? As for the glass case for a computer you want to move around.... that's just lunacy.

  • @whpony96

Far too many components plugged in together to be a ESD failure. That was a bad motherboard from the get go. The long memory tests and sudden multiple reversions in the motherboard hardware design point in that direction. Besides that Paul today's hardware is far more resilient to ESD than 10 years ago.

I'm entirely certain that electrostatic discharge did not brick the mobo, if it's truly bricked. No amount of accumulation from normal scenarios could kill a motherboard like that and leave other components unscathed. Unless they placed it in the proximity of a Van de Graaff generator. ;)

  • @NCISCherno

Check the old mobo with another Threadripper if able. More times than not when I had this issue after moving a PC over distance a full rebuild helped clear wherever the short in the system was that was preventing booting and fired right back up.

well if you build then you should use antistatic bands. Just the matt is not enough and just touching the case isnt enough. Dont know why all so called professional builders on YT avoid that entirley. I mean they do videos of companies who produce graficcards or other stuff and you see how protected they are but on YT NONE are using these things.

    • @JeremyWertheimerScience

My thoughts as well. A metal PC case creates a Faraday cage effect while more easily dissipating static charge build up. Glass is a resistor and can build up huge voltages if it rubs against other materials like plastic or foam (as it would in shipping). Plus metal can't shatter. My PC is in an all metal Fractal Design case,. Plus a metal side panel means i can relax about less than perfect cable management cuz no one can see it.

Thank you, Paul and Joe, for the follow-up video on this, and I hope Joe is loving the new system! I am in the process of troubleshooting a system that I built with similar specs, but for some reason, the system is shutting down on two specific occasions:
    1. The system completely shuts down (Event ID 41 - Kernal Panic) when running a benchmark like Cinebench 2024 or Cinebench R23.
    2. The system completely shuts down when using the Mercury Playback Engine when playing back MOV files in Adobe Premiere.
Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated! Thank you! 😃

Kind of pissed.. I just bought mine a week ago and got the 1.1. Can't believe there is now a 1.2. I ran the 6400mhz zeta r5 neo ram, and set to XMPP1.. and it booted.. then next time I booted it wouldn't start. Had to clear CMOS to get the damn thing to work. Gigabyte tech says the chip can only handl 5200mhz. Starting to think this Rev 1.1 board may not work well with 6400 + threadripper (at least 7960x). Also seemingly have had random disconnect from network port (2.5gig).. not sure why.

That's the problem for those of us that do our builds for ourselves every few years, you got to have two of everything to swap out and test for bad components and if you maxed your budget on your build then you are stuck with shipping each part back and hoping the new one fixes the problem. That happen to me on my last build, it sat for month till I got to the RAM, Gigabyte had the RAM part number on their web sight as "usable" RAM for the Motherboard, it was NOT, all because of that I swapped out a good motherboard and CPU back to NewEgg.
nice cosmetic case but not practical, really? you got to putting shrouds to control the air flow..lol I already know I going to put a water cooler in so if it don't have a top mount it tits on a bull to me. Go buy a fish tank if you want something to look at. Who wants a 10k computer with a over heating problem
P.S. then Joe goes home and plays farmVille on Facebook...lol

I would think this is a non-issue on threadripper boards, but did AMD handle SSD bifurcation the same way they did on Zen3 boards? Whereas you can only have a certain number installed at one time so the system isn't turning them off to run one over the other. I was ready to install on x4 slot add-on card until I read into that. Depending on the config of the mobo, it may choose to disable/prioritize loading of one PCE slot over another, in which case, the PCI slot might get 'turned off' which would defeat the purpose.

The bad motherboard or dead/no power is common when things gets moved around. I have had many systems not work at all (laptops, desktops, etc). I found that after letting them sit for long periods of time and essentially rebuilding the system, they have come back to life.
Sometimes technology simply gets pissed off. Also consider we had an issue with our Threadripper build being transported upright with the giant ass tower cooler putting a lot of load and stress on the motherboard. Later found out that the fittings on that board (TRX40) were press-in fittings which means you can essentially pull out the anchor point on the board. Considering how sensitive new tech is, I am not surprised one bit. After many years, you simply don't bother asking why.

Your motherboard might not be dead. Pull out the battery and put it back in after a minute.

Happy to see Party Monster up and running again! Poor Joe.. it's felt like he's had a broken Xmas present all this time. Keeping up with 3d printing can be an art in itself, but it seems more impressive by the day.. nice parts from Brian there!
As an aside it occurred to me as I watched there might be a lot of value in a general purpose video project looking at the real world benefits and limitations of air coolers across some current and recent archive CPU's. Whilst it's true that coolers have TDP ratings on the box it's also probably true to say that those numbers are similarly promotional, and with TDP creep being a real thing, even to some degree (no pun intended) across the AMD range, the push and pull between opting for air cooling over AIO/custom loops is probably something that weighs on a lot of enthusiasts who may wonder where the limit of air coolers actually rests.
