Remember that video where I read my childhood diary? I said I wouldn't eat candy anymore??? CHILD PLEASE HAND ME THAT KIT KAT. Making restrictive food-based resolutions have literally never worked for me. Instead, I now choose to work *with* my brain and say things like "hey if i want brownies, I'm gonna learn to make the best brownies from scratch using the most wholesome ingredients!" and that's been working for me a lot better. Now it's your turn! Let me know what resolutions you keep FAILING at
losing weight. I don't have a number I would be happy with but instead I gain on average 10ish pounds a year. also like you I'm always tired I'm not sure if it's asthma or what but walking 2-3 flights of steps makes me out of breath for a minute
Evelyn thank you so much for being SPECIFIC with your advice!!!!! 😂 So many TH-camrs and motivational speakers just spout out vague and overused cliches on how to improve your life and I'm so sick of it. Thank you for standing out from the rest, being honest, and actually caring about your viewers. I will now take on board all your advice for my resolutions 😊
SMART goals: Specific (what is it? Less vague) Measurable (what does success look like) Achievable (be reasonable, be honest) Relatable (Why) Time-based (how long to give yourself to do it)
I always mess up goal attainment because of the "why". My goals in the past were goals only because I felt they had to be: lose weight, save money for a house, etc. All to keep up with others and none of that shiz will actually make me happy. This year, my goals are tailored to who I am as a person, a creative and someone who wants to help those around me. Money is a big part of my goals, so I'm doing the adulting thing and getting my finances straight (including paying on my student loans😢😢). Thank you for this video!!!
I was currently lying in my bed, beating up on myself for already for falling behind on goals that I have for this year PLUS stressing all the steps that are in place to carry out...ooh this video is like a soothing balm. 🙏
Only 1 goal for me this year....Purchase my 3 Flat that I’ve put myself in the position to actually attain by the end of 2019. From there I can begin having financial FREEDOM from having the passive income of property ownership. Ready to make literal moves and Go for IT! Last year was all about the moves before the moves. Paid off $10k in student loans and general credit cards, saved more than that, credit score at 800, all in the mindset of getting my property. I keep hearing Beyoncé ‘pay me in equity watch me reverse out of debt’ 🏎
i was reading over my old journals from like 10 years ago and i have the same goals every year "loose weight, write more, read more" over the years this loose weight one was the thing i fought with because i inherited the worst metabolism from my father, i have been consistently the exact same weight for 15 years. 3 years ago i moved and quit the gym [i use to work out every day 5 days a week and do yoga twice a week] and my new budget didn't have gym membership fees, so while i walk to and from work [one hour 5 days a week] and the jobs on my feet, i recently started working out at home with a few weights and youtube videos. i had to reflect on the whole weight loss thing because it was a cycle of eating healthy and exercising, missing one day so eating less, working out harder the next day, eating even less, and eventually i was trying to intake 500 calories while burning 2000 because [again] my weight is forever stuck at the same number earlier this year i got more specific and realized what i really want is to tone, plus the only results i ever see is the measurements, not the scale. so i've started avoiding stepping on the scale and calorie counting [since that is a trigger for me, and i already know i should eat a carrot instead of a cupcake] but the other thing i discovered [thank you therapy] is that weight loss was never really my goal, i have so many happy memories working out with my dad, when my parents divorced my mom and moms side of the family kept telling me to loose weight and started limiting what i could have and forcing me to diet when i didn't want to until one day it became "normal", so there's that. sorry this ended dark, but i am in a better place. i loved this video, it really inspired me ^_^
Health goals: Do a challenge at least once a quarter, see my dentist might re routinely (I have paid a heavy price for the neglect this year), reduce milk intake, explore more skincare (I’m tired of the endless battle with hyperpigmentation and post acne pigmentation), and work on my positivity (I say some horrible things to myself).
Man I needed this video so bad. I’m terrible at even setting goals. I’ve always just existed and than later felt so guilty for feeling so lost. These have been my washed up goals for years. 1. Get my license to drive a car 2. Move into a nicer apartment 3. Travel to S.Korea / Save $ in the 1st place 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
Gotta get specific. Like, 5 networking events, 2 educational seminars, 1 conference. 3 new people. So, you can know when you reach your goal, feel accomplished and celebrate.
Internet Cousin!!! You've really been reading me for filth and motivating me at the same damn time these last two videos! And I am HERE. FOR. IT! Thanks girl!
we're 10 months into 2019 and i just came across this video. and i did that travel thing. first i went to my mom's holiday home (my mom has a house in the country side and lives in a 430 square feet rented apartment in the city) with a friend. then i went on my own. and for the grand finale i went to visit a friend who lives in a different country this summer. maybe next year i'm ready to go on my own to a place where i don't know anybody. anyways i'm so proud of myself
Took me two years of wishful thinking and battling my procrastination but I finally wrote a complete sitcom pilot. And even though it's just been chilling in my laptop, it still feels amazing to have accomplished that goal. Good luck with yours 😊 I bet it's great.
Love the bit about not taking on every single new opportunity just because it's offered, and focusing on your specific goals instead. I feel like, as creatives, we get into this knee-jerk reaction of saying yes to everything and hoping something sticks/catapults us. I'm a writer, too, and have had to cut back on all kinds of "side hustle" jobs that no longer serve me. So worth it.
Thank you again, Evelyn. I keep falling down on the New Years resolution job of regular exercise. I too suffer from stiffness and inflexibility (I’m 25+ years your senior) and this greatly concerns me. Never quit, right? So I am beginning again with your tips in mind. BTW, my goal is to travel to London this year. Um, I am Detroiter who has never been to our world famous auction house, Dumouchelles or to the Motown museum. Starting small? Yes, madam. I saved this vid to watch later, I want this to stay uppermost in my mind. -What a blessing you are!
1. My inner monologue will be relentlessly kind and encouraging 2. Expressing emotions in a healthy way and not bottling them up, only to explode in rage or ignored with mind numbing distractions 3. Telling people when they've stepped on my neck. This trifecta has worked wonders for my mental health and my creativity and productivity have vastly increased. Not to mention the decrease in anxiety!!!
Wow. You just retaught me all the important shit I forgot. I like your tough love, it feels so sweet. This video speaks to me so much right now and I've already shared it with all my friends. What a great message to receive on this beautiful sunny afternoon in the Hill Country. Thank you, Evelyn!
I started on my goals today. One goal I have is to be consistent with working on my ideas. I posted my first blog post after taking a 6-month break and I will continue to do so every Monday and Thursday.
If it helps I worked on this problem by giving myself specific goals for how to do that. Like in undergrad, I got tired of writing papers until 3am the morning they were due. So I made a goal to start my papers TWO days before they were due, not one. It was a small change but it vastly improved my undergrad experience.
“Again and again and again and again and again...” I know I missed some in there but you get it..also, love when you say “you know what I’m saying!” That voice kills me everything one.
*Watches in amazement* 😮🙆🏾♀️ *Clicks like* 👍🏾 *Watches again to take notes* 🖊📒 *Reasses life goals* 🤔 Thanks for another hilariously informative & transformative video, Evelyn!!!
The real difference for me is documenting and reviewing. Weekly reviews and monthly reviews. It gives me a chance to look at how I’ve been doing or addressing any barriers. I also allow myself to change my goal it if hasn’t been to my benefit. For example, I am reading 2 books a month. If I needed to I don’t mind changing to one book a month or even how many pages per day since some books are really long. Changing or reducing is better than giving up altogether. I’m on my third book so far and it hasn’t been that difficult to keep up. I also write book reviews. Anyways I have a bunch of goals, my fitness goal is literally to work out this year. I want to end the year looking back and saying yup I did work out. It’s not about being perfect at all. Sometimes specific goals will give you an all or nothing mentality.
I so appreciate these videos a ya boi (me, a girl actually) be SO lost!!! I swear every year that I will start waking up early ON MY OWN, knowing my body don't even begin to stir until about 10:30. But I hate alarms :/ My more measurable goal this year is to have breakfast before noon every week day. So far, not bad! Not perfect obviously, but my days are starting earlier since I'm making myself get up for breakfast.
hi evelyn. i just wanted to say that you are one of the most eloquent, well-read, positive and well-versed people i have ever come across. i light up when i see you have posted or you're posting something on your IG stories. you inspire me so much, not only as an adult, but as a writer. i know for sure that you are going to get that pilot because you are effortlessly funny. thank you for posting your shenanigans on here, i love it, and many others love it too.
Yesssss Evelyn...if I'm still in Japan next year, you're gonna come and take a yoga class with me! #speakingitintobeing 🙏🙏🙏 My goals for this year were: 1. achieve N3 level in the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) and 2. continue to work on my foundation and gain experience as a yoga teacher. One month in, I've realized that my mini goals were wayyyyyy too lofty (I'm working full time too as an elementary school teacher...ya girl is TIRED) but I am still on track to achieving the main goals! 🙌
Yes, start with the end in mind and do the things that take you there step by step! Don’t run after every shiny thing or you will be spread everywhere like sweet jam on toast. Keep hustling in a thoughtful way. I can’t wait to hear about what you achieved and the progress you make on the others! Goo energy and sound advice from the beautiful Evelyn!❤️
Be HONEST with YOURSELF!!! I always give that advice to people...stop lying to yourself. It only hurts YOU...or stops YOU from reaching your potential. You are SPOT ON with this vid, Evelyn!! Thanks!! P.S. Sorry for the random caps...haha!
This video gives me so much hope in life. This plus your last one about the vision board are both fire! I have goals I want to achieve and I mine similar to yours as in very specific and more realistic. I want to loose weight and save money. I did not say I will lose 18 pounds this year, my goal is to drink more water and cook my own food more. Nothing extravagant. Do I have big goals? Yes but I will make smaller goals first before I attempt those. Evelyn resonates with me so much. I wish I lived in Austin so I had a chance to meet her in real life. She is my spirit animal. 🤗
Omg thank you for this!! It came just in time as I’m 28 days into my 2019 goals going “girl... what are YOUUUUU doing with your life!? How are we getting here”
I've never done the weightloss resolution - ever; not the dietary change ones and not the exercise ones. I choke a lot working on projects because Imposter Syndrome will haunt your days, nights and weekends and he perfect isz just... frequently the enemy of the good. 2019 is the year where I slow tf down and figure out how to be nice to myself and how to build up my faith in myself
Such a good message, i agree. Sometimes we can get in a rush to do things when we forget the effort and the journey is very important too. BTW you're hilarious, and I'm loving these faux locs 👌🏿👌🏿😀😘
That is so true, being more specific in your goal/grind setting is very important. Yes know what works with your brain best AND baby steps. I use to exercise 2 hours daily and I started back at 30 minutes this year to make sure it becomes a habit again.
Man, that was so helpful. I absolutely hate doing New Year's resolutions. I am a recipe person, a concrete thinker. I need steps. I can't visualize the big picture (a whole year?!) unless I start at the beginning and fill in all the details. Even making quarterly goals seems overwhelming. Your tips made take out some paper and start writing. I'm going to make some monthly goals (baby step goals), but ask myself "why?" for each, and then get specific on what I'm going to do each day to reach them. I also love the "hack your brain" tip - I need to figure out when to attempt stuff - take walks during the day while the sun is shining, read my bible before I start the chores, etc.
I didn't make any goal at the beginning of the year but so far I have achieved something exciting things in 2019.I am doing better than 2018. By taking your advices, I want my goal of 2019 be specific, well-planned. Thank you.
internet cousin? more like internet big sister, this was so good! Made me critically think about where I wanna be at the end of this year, and how I can realistically achieve my goals, ugh ur wonderful 💜
I say this all the time but THANK YOU. You're appreciated! I'm smart but not good with expressing myself. You help me to express what's in my head in an empathic, understanding and loving way. So now I can just send ppl to yr videos instead of trying to explain and risk coming off awkward, aggressive or condescending. ❤
Some goals I’ve had trouble with over the years are losing weight, exercising more, dieting, practicing every day, etc. Clearly not specific enough and a lot of room to not get anything done, so usually from my failures I gave up on setting goals and resolutions.
Thank you Aunty Ev! This is uber helpful. I’ve been journaling for two years now - sporadically at first, but very consistently in the last six months. My resolution is to write an entry everyday this year (with 3 mercy strikes because we’re all a work in progress sis 😭). So far, so great. I’m doing it to become more self aware, and self awareness will help me keep track of my habits and change them if need be. The ultimate goal is mental health. I wish you all the best with your goals boo! And I hope you reach all the artistic epiphanies this year! ❤️
I've dipped in and out the internets, but it feels very good to come back here for some knowledge. Evelyn, THANK YOU for speaking the truth. Some really good nuggets in here. Better than 90% of the TED talks I've watched about setting goals. Way to go, Cousin.
Thank you so much for this! Another helpful tip would be to ask yourself what stopped you from accomplishing that goal last time (if it applies) That helped so much 🤦🏾♀️
Haitian Princess Eureka! You just helped me ask myself a very valuable question! We always have great intentions, but what caused the fall thru with the follow through? 🧐🤓💗🕵🏽♀️
I like you. I think we could be good friends if we didn't live on opposite sides of the Atlantic. You give honest, wholesome, relatable advice and you practice what you preach. I hope you accomplished your goals for 2019.
I wholeheartedly agree. aligning your goals with your actions or vice versa rather. i am a full believer that vision boards should have action plans with dates. i did my first ig live video on creating that plan. yes and ask for help and pointers from people who are where you want to be. i have a few virtual mentors. even if i don't ask them questions, i see how they move and how it relates to their brand. thanks for sharing this with the world.
Evelyn! My internet cousin, my cool big sister I never had in my head lol. Thank you for this. I did this with my goals this year but after watching this video I'm going to fine-tune my goals a little more. I split my goals up between 'Self' and 'Things' but a few things I'm going to stop failing at is being consistent, being patient with people and finally submitting my wheel of fortune contestant [application] video lol
omg the throat coughing i do that all the time, need the doctor tooo sis For years I have been trying to save up to buy my own place and finally move out from my moms place, im still there, but I know I can save a lot this year and then I think the dream will finally be in reach!
I kept making this goal year after year to lose 50lbs. I even had it spread out across weeks, like that was going to help. But I never got close to losing any weight because of how precise I kept trying to be, especially with trying to workout and diet at the same time. Last year, I made different goals. For the first bit of the year, I focused on going to the gym more consistently. Once, I established that, I cut sugar from my diet. Then later in the year (when it was cold) I ended my gym membership and switched to yoga and pilates at home (which, if I'm honest I still struggle with getting done.) To offset not going to the gym as often, I started eating more plant-based and am now slowly transitioning to becoming a vegan. Although I've allowed myself to not be as strict as I once was, the first few months of the year I lost 12 lbs and I haven't weighed myself since I started eating vegan, but my stomach has gotten a lot smaller. I don't exercise exclusively but I walk to work and school. The biggest changes for me has been focusing on food (since I love to eat) and doing exercise in a way that flows with my routine and allowing myself to change habits as they fit my life and not marking it as failure when I'm not hitting imaginary benchmarks.
Hey Evelyn!! So happy to find a new post for me. I’m trying to get myself out of the house and to the laundromat and this talk of goals - while also giving me something to watch while my clothes wash - is so helpful!! 💖💖😘
Your videos have been so inspirational lately I needed them 😭😭😭😭 my goal has been “finish my book” every year for the past three years and I still haven’t accomplished it. I need to be more specific!
Let me know what resolutions you keep FAILING at
Your looking pretty
The whole 5am meditation thing! I stay falling asleep - yikes, truly not for me.
Aunty Ev 😭, girlfren 😭, Sister Lyn 😭 thank you for taking me out of my current moment of depression. Dropping gems all 2019 💖❤
losing weight. I don't have a number I would be happy with but instead I gain on average 10ish pounds a year. also like you I'm always tired I'm not sure if it's asthma or what but walking 2-3 flights of steps makes me out of breath for a minute

We all know the new year don’t start till February 1st so this is right on time 👏🏾
Technically An Adult I screamed 😂

deb1920 Absolutely! Got em all
narrowed down. Kept it brief in the comments 😊
When did Evelyn become Oprah be caused I'm here for it 2019🎊
These new effects, sounds, and even the flow of the video is dope. The brain explosion at 6:13 was literally perfect.
whose HYPE to achieve their goals and #BEGREAT in 2019!? i didn't even have in goals and Evelyn got me like....let's get it fam!
Japan was dope and is actually pretty easy to navigate, they have English titles everywhere. But good luck with your goals cuz
Internet Cousin!!! You've really been reading me for filth and motivating me at the same damn time these last two videos! And I am HERE. FOR. IT! Thanks girl!
"I'm that person who ain't dentist in doo doo DOOP" 💀💀💀 RELATABLE. if you relate let's hit up the dentist year, we can do it!😂

That throat sound you made took me right back to childhood, I think every Black mom/auntie/sister makes that sound bahah reminds me of home😊

New year's resolutions lasted until a quarter past midnight. Now I'm just trying to make better choices instead of dwelling on goals.
“Be nice to yourself “💕 my new mantra

This video just saved my life, thanks. Why am I just finding you?! 😭🙌🏾❤️
This is THE BEST video on goal setting I’ve ever seen PERIODT. 🙌🏾
S/O to Evelyn for creating the exact video I needed to see! And for having 0 dislikes on this video YASSSS!
Yesssss Evelyn...if I'm still in Japan next year, you're gonna come and take a yoga class with me! #speakingitintobeing 🙏🙏🙏

One month in, I've realized that my mini goals were wayyyyyy too lofty (I'm working full time too as an elementary school teacher...ya girl is TIRED) but I am still on track to achieving the main goals! 🙌
Thank you so much for such free quality knowledge. I love watching you all the way from Qatar in the Middle East. Keep up the good work
I love you so much!! Thank you for existing! This video is just what I needed.
Yes! More life classes please!
I keep coming back to this video, because I just love you Evelyn!!!! But also, its super helpful and helps me to refocus when things be getting crazy.
Yas to specificity in 2019 and remembering the why! This is my favorite goal video from you to date - very helpful. :-)
Thanks for helping me stayed focused on these 2019 goals...
Btw, you hair and makeup is on point. 💄 🔥 You are looking great, girl! 👍🏽
That thing you do with your hand...BREAKS MY FACE...every time...
Omg thank you for this!! It came just in time as I’m 28 days into my 2019 goals going “girl... what are YOUUUUU doing with your life!? How are we getting here”
Exactly what I needed right now. Also I'm rooting so hard for your comedy pilot!!
You look so beautiful! The way that hair style frames your face is working! Your skin is glowing, and that lippie is popping.
I am going to need to check in with this specific video at least quarterly. Thank you for this fam.
Thank you Cousin Evelyn! I needed this!
So I just re watched this and I'm happy to report I managed to hit all of these writing my goals for the first time this year. 🙌🏾👌🏾
I didn't make any goal at the beginning of the year but so far I have achieved something exciting things in 2019.I am doing better than 2018. By taking your advices, I want my goal of 2019 be specific, well-planned.
Thank you.
Just want to say thank you. Your videos make me laugh and smile. Currently I’m 22 and lost with life and what I’m suppose to do.
internet cousin? more like internet big sister, this was so good! Made me critically think about where I wanna be at the end of this year, and how I can realistically achieve my goals, ugh ur wonderful 💜
You so Cool Miss Evelyn!
I too aim to go to Japan on 2020 ... I'm still loving out of my comfort zone and saying yes to things
You are so funny! I live for you! I’m feeling your lippies lately! Keep sending us videos cousin.
This was actually helpful and realistic. Thank you
This video came at the perfect time. I haven’t made my list of resolutions yet but I just bought 10 books so that’s one I can start with!
The timeliness of this!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get me together!!! *grabs notebook*
I definitely see you in somebody's writers' room. I see it! U have both the talent and the look. U can do it!
This is perfect. I literaly did all of this without noticing I did when planning my goals this year.
This video was fabbb!
Also as someone who moved to and now lives in Japan, that was a major ego boost 😂 thanks!
Evelyn's "you know what I'm saying" is very distinct, and I love it lol
Hands down my favourite person on this youtube. 😂
Relearning the piano, teaching myself Spanish, and going back to the gym. Shit is hard fam
omg the throat coughing i do that all the time, need the doctor tooo sis
For years I have been trying to save up to buy my own place and finally move out from my moms place, im still there, but I know I can save a lot this year and then I think the dream will finally be in reach!
2020 & still relevant. Timeless content. Clap clap 👏🏽
Your videos have been so inspirational lately I needed them 😭😭😭😭 my goal has been “finish my book” every year for the past three years and I still haven’t accomplished it. I need to be more specific!
I am rewatching this and I still love the message. I can't wait to read anything you write.
I said it before and I'll say it again...you are just just wonderful. I'm so happy that I found you.
Needed this! Now I feel less stressed about all the things I want to accomplish.
